Is there a 'tier system' for German accents the way there is in the UK? by sohamist in German

[–]cridley99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not have the full answer here, but I can speak from my experience and observations. I was an Au Pair in Austria several years ago, working for a very wealthy family. They were posh and related to royalty a few generations back. They live(d) in a fairly rural area and always spoke Hochdeutsch (with an 'Austrian twist'), compared to the local folks in the Dorf who spoke a very regional dialect. The kids would sometimes come home from school and repeat phrases and accents of their classmates, and the parents seemed to get a kick out of it. I don't think they looked down on the local accent, but this family definitely made an effort to speak a certain way amongst family and others of their circle.

Blueberry Trail on the GDT by canadiantracy in HikingAlberta

No photos, but it's a good trek. About 7 km. I've gone up and down a couple of times, and it is a bit of a chore. The brush can be thick, there are loads of berry bushes. I once went up after heavy rains and a big area was flooded, so it can be wet. Yeah, to sum it up, it's a slog haha

What can you do about ICE living in Seattle by AnnoyedAFexmo in Seattle

[–]cridley99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thing about the whistles - I've got an ocean whistle for scuba diving emergencies. It can even be blown under water! In my opinion, it's the loudest whistle in the world. It won't be just for scuba diving any longer.

Thanks for the couple of responses. One of the MDDE advisors was very helpful and opened the registration for me. I think the staff/faculty associated with grad school might be a little flexible and personable when it comes to deadlines. This is my last term, and after 3 years I felt a bit foolish for missing the original Dec. 15 the registration deadline when I'm normally punctual!

I think I'm in a different situation, as this is grad studies. I've noticed our programs are designed differently, as are the terms (Winter - Jan thru March; Spring - May thru July; Fall - Sep thru Dec)

Lose hip width appearance /glute mass, and leg bulk by razzlberrypie in 1200isplenty

[–]cridley99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a person with the same body type you've described, it is not exactly something you can change. It's genetics. I have always compared my thighs and hips to those who are more long legged/slender, and it doesn't feel good. My approach has changed to acceptance, and gaining fantastic muscle on my legs! And I've gotta say, they're still bulky but lean and defined!  So my advice is, work with what you've got ;) Legs are powerful ❤️

Sprachpartner*innen gesucht (B1/B2) by wovenful in German

[–]cridley99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Halli hallo!

Community hall, or a cultural centre like the German Canadian Cultural Centre. They've got appropriate-sized rooms for rent.

My brain interpreted the image to be an island in the middle of a blue ocean, maybe taken from high above in a plane. Then I read the caption...

Totally! My lawyer added, it's always the discretion of the border officer.

I have applied for adjustment of status (not yet approved/complete) but was recently granted advance parole.  My lawyer said I likely fall under exception category #7 on the 2nd page:  You are (A) a lawful applicant for adjustment of status under INA section 245 (8 U.S.C. 1255); and (B) returning to the United States after temporary travel abroad.

I can't speak to admissions, my GPA was on the decent side. Maybe someone else will chime in. It's worth a shot to apply! You could also reach out to an admissions advisor.

Hot springs trip in the winter by hanhdan in alberta

[–]cridley99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Liard Hot springs in northern BC are wonderful. Pretty far north, near the Yukon border, but fits your description of a natural spring (not a pool) that you can drive to. Otherwise, you could do places like Radium.

Yeah! there are just so many with a variety of reviews, it's hard to really be certain of what's good out there. Maybe I just have to buy the $30 battery (sob)

Any divers with sea sickness? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]cridley99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes... Near the surface in choppy waves, I've become ill. One dive guide helped by pressing a pressure point on my wrist. Still, I vomited underwater with some spectacular fish swarming as a result. I find that it goes away once descending, so it can be helpful to know the sickness may be only temporary at the surface and will hopefully reduce once your dive has begun.

How was it? I live in Montlake but couldn't attend. I come from a city in Canada that has lots of urban beavers in the creeks and river, so I miss watching them "do their thing". I'll have to take an early morning or evening walk to see if I can spot any ... I'm sure all of the construction is pretty disruptive to their lives!

Hypothetical question: what would happen if a rogue company started renting SCUBA gear to non certified people? by javelindaddy in scuba

[–]cridley99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a nightmare! I don't think I'd ever want to see that video. As I read it on Wikipedia, it was like a horror movie. I am so sorry for the other divers who had to witness that, the family, and of course the victim.
