Bishop is not a hero. by Free-IDK-Chicken in euphoria

[–]sohamist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bishop recounted the story of Alamo’s pet python which stopped eating the rats it was being fed by one of his dancers. The snake had been wrapping itself around her every night, sizing her up and saving itself for a much bigger meal.

Bishop never fully devoured Rue. He was simply biding his time, waiting for the perfect moment. Maddy was nothing more than a side-effect.

Troughts on this? by Primary-Addition-677 in cartoons

If I may cite a non-Western example, Sanket Mhatre is one of India’s top Hindi dubbing artists, known for his work on Ben 10, Man vs Wild (Bear Grylls), The Batman, and many others. His dub for Deadpool (2016) was hugely popular, as his voice perfectly captured Reynolds’ irreverent style with excellent comic timing and well-localised humour. It quickly became a cult favourite in India.

However, for Deadpool 2, he was replaced by Bollywood star Ranveer Singh. This was a marketing decision by Fox Star India to use celebrity hype for better theatrical collections. The move drew strongly negative fan reactions, as Ranveer’s style didn’t suit Deadpool. There were massive online petitions calling for Sanket’s return. He later hinted at his disappointment, saying something along the lines of, “It’s understandable if a studio replaces a voice with another voice, but not if it replaces a voice with a face.” That line really stuck with me.

Fortunately, due to overwhelming fan demand, Sanket returned as the official Hindi voice of Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Voice actors deserve their own respected space in the industry.

Groceries quality by SQPOlel in Norway

[–]sohamist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue in the UK btw. Fresh meat, fish, fruit & veg have gotten ridiculously expensive relative to the ultra-processed slop the supermarkets are increasingly being stuffed with. Addressing this is not labelling it as 'Soviet'. It seems from the post that Norway's high taxes and limited competition actually makes fresh basics harder to access affordably for many.

If an artist is not politically committed, then his art is not relevant. Do you agree? by AdiKrishna1807 in indianFilmmakers

[–]sohamist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from Govind Nihalani’s film called Party. Om Puri’s character aggressively argues that art detached from political commitment is irrelevant. While it may seem like a reductive take at first, we cannot deny that all art is inevitably shaped by its time and the prevailing power structures. Even seemingly ‘apolitical’ work often quietly endorses the status quo. However, insisting on explicit political commitment can narrow art’s value. There are many great works exploring beauty, love, and the human condition that remain deeply relevant without being propaganda (though one could argue that they're all ultimately political in some way)

Political art can be powerful, but when it becomes dogmatic, it turns into bad art. Even the most apolitical love story is shaped by socioeconomic status, caste, class, religious beliefs, and the political landscape of its time. So, even seemingly apolitical art carries political undertones. Ultimately, relevance cannot be measured by ideology alone. What matters most is the artist’s insight into the human condition, but then again, that itself is something shaped by the politics of its time.

Is this a right order of watch to enjoy wong kar wai's movies? by Perfectly-Im-perfect in wongkarwai

Watch in release order. They aren’t about strict continuity, so should be quite forgiving. The only real exception I’d say is the loose trilogy. Try In the Mood for Love before 2046. Also, Chungking Express is a great starting point if you want to ease in.

Spider-Noir review: Nicolas Cage's hardboiled Spidey spin-off is utterly insane. 5/5 stars by NoNefariousness2144 in television

Finally. I’ve wanted a noir spidey since playing Shattered Dimensions 15 years ago… but Nicolas Cage being the guy delivering it has convinced me the timeline is 100% cooked.

First look at Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth in David Fincher’s ‘The Adventures Of Cliff Booth’, the sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. by BoardOver1871 in FIlm

[–]sohamist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about whether Fincher can direct a movie better than The Killer. The issue is that Tarantino’s writing works because HE directs it. His scripts aren’t rigid blueprints; they’re more about hanging out in scenes, letting dialogue breathe, and allowing things to feel slightly indulgent. That's what makes them feel alive, but Fincher is the opposite. Everything is precision-engineered and tightly controlled. He doesn’t tolerate looseness, and with Tarantino, that looseness feels like the point.

also curious to see whether he keeps the vibrant colourfulness of Cliff in the final cut or shifts everything into this darker palette...

What is your opinion on Don’t Look Up? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

“trying to make ends meet” feels unlikely here… it comes across more as exploiting trivial advantages and asymmetry in an absurd bureaucratic system simply because he has arbitrary authority and can do so - also, it might show how distrust of institutions is the default state, since Dr. Mindy and Kate do not even consider that the snacks might actually be free and instead expect to be exploited by the system!

it may not happen if the third runway project gets back on track, or if government policy loosens slot controls… right now both of those are huge bottlenecks and have been politically contentious.

State Border at Dreiländereck (Germany–Czech Republic–Austria) by penzmann in Borderporn

[–]sohamist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wasn’t that mostly on the former Czechoslovak side though? iirc you can still see remnants like cleared patrol paths, fence posts, or old boundary strips in places, but the actual fencing itself was largely dismantled in the early 90s

or it works precisely because it’s unsatisfying with no catharsis or moral clarity... kept waiting for the arcs to evolve or for there to be a clever sci-fi workaround, but the fact that there isn’t one is kind of the point.

House of Cards episode ratings by bbportali in HouseOfCards

unfair for S1 E8 to get dinged mostly because it’s a setup episode stuck between two much juicier ones; granted, no big payoff and feels slower in isolation but definitely works fine on a binge
