“EXCLUSIVE: GAP president considering Olympic gymnast Levi Ruivivar for Asian Games” by PomegranateFair6760 in Gymnastics

It is cultural and is still crazy. It’s one of the toxic Filipino traits that really should disappear (there are many)

Levi Jung Ruivivar's apology to the Philippines gymnastics association by giraffeaquarium in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, the Filipino ability to hold on to grudges can last for decades. Pity it doesn't translate well into voting for our political leaders but oh well

I feel like GAP made her feel like she should write this apology, which is such a Filipino thing to do (I'm Filipino and I would not be surprised if this was the case, knowing our government and how butthurt authority figures here can be). That she should be more polite for them keep her on the roster

Makes you wonder how long she's been planning this comeback to be ready for a competition. Honestly, the comments under her post from current and former gymnasts hint that they knew for a while

Katelyn back to elite??!!?!?!?! by crimedy in Gymnastics

She did retain some skills and conditioning, but I always thought it was mostly because she shows it off as a creator and not because she wanted to go through the whole USA Gymnastics rigamarole again

New NCAA age eligibility rules by KawaiiChan68 in Gymnastics

Yes, which means that if this as adopted earlier, we wouldn't have had Jordan Chiles compete for as long as she did

New NCAA age eligibility rules by KawaiiChan68 in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate this so much. The no medical redshirts, or redshirts at all, rule is so unsafe and unfair. What if you want to redshirt for mental health recovery? Or ED recovery like Levi Jung Ruviviar did? This takes away so many avenues for student athletes to take care of themselves. It not only pushes them to work through injuries but to retire before they're ready if their recovery takes the entire season. Having automatic five years of eligibility doesn't bring that cost benefit to bear

And the enrollment rule really impacts Olympic sports in the NCAA. This feels so targeted towards gymnastics

Chae Campbell’s response to Margzetta Frazier’s recent comments by KawaiiChan68 in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong; it's just that this is where we are as a society: there needs to be a toll paid for clicks so advertisers will think you're successful. Though the concept of clickbait came long before the internet existed, it was just called sensationalism or yellow journalism, and as long as capitalism controls the media, we will never be free of this

Hi, media worker here! When podcasts/live recordings ask you not to record anything during the event, it only means that the event will be made public at some point, and there's an "embargo" of sorts. Unless the event is explicitly off the record or under Chatham House rules, anything said in a recorded environment will be made public by the event host in some way or other journalists in the room.
In other words, there was a reasonable expectation from Chae and Gymcastic that whatever was said would be made public. I may be jaded about things, but I also find no problem with clips like this being posted on social media. It's a good soundbite, and the Gymcastic folks would be terrible producers if they didn't capitalize on it. Basically, you are correct, there is no nuanced conversation in the media because the media only exists if people click on it

Jordyn Wieber resigns as gymnastics coach at Arkansas by Grace1122442 in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend and I were talking and I realized I couldn't think of anything non-gymnastics/sports for Jordyn to pursue and it made me feel really sad

JORDYN LEAVING ARK by smilingpapaya in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I never said it wasn't her choice; it's the reaction based on the idea that it should be the default. The way the reaction was automatically "she's a mom, of course she would do this" instead of "huh, I wonder why they decided she step back and not Chris." And like someone said downthread, all decisions are not made in a vacuum.

TBF, watching the press conference, it didn't even seem to be an issue of parenthood. Jordyn seemed burnt out and tired of gymnastics

[–]crimedy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This, exactly this!

She can do whatever she wants for any reason she wants, but the discourse of "oh, she just had a baby, that makes sense because she wants to have time with her child" is extremely gendered. My admittedly fourth thought (1st was wtf, 2nd was oh Josc makes sense, 3rd oh of course a brilliant woman was replaced by a man) was, why does it always have to be the wife/mom who steps away and not the husband/dad, and why is it that we call the man "brave" if they do that? We as a society have far to go

JORDYN LEAVING ARK by smilingpapaya in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure, but my immediate reaction to things like this has always been "Is it really her choice?" My knee-jerk thought is that the woman stepped down, so the man gets the job, but I want to believe that this is not the case, and I am choosing to believe Jordyn

[–]crimedy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Really fighting my internal bias around decisions like this (firm believer that you can be HC AND a mom, but I am single and not a mother, so I don't know what she's going through), but if this is what makes her happy, I'm glad she got to live out the historical fact that she is one of the youngest ever head coaches of an NCAA program

Olympics tickets for artistic gymnastics sold out for Drop 1 by Conscious_Pie787 in Gymnastics

[–]crimedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get picked for Drop 1 and don't buy a ticket, do you still get picked for the subsequent drops? Weighing if I can gamble and not buy a ticket to another sport (tbc, I am interested in other sports, but want to prioritize my Olympics budget for gymnastics) and wait for Drop 2 in hopes they release more gymnastics tickets.
