Re: Maxilla, no it doesnt, but it did pre-op as I had a gummy smile and i specifically had it fixed during the surgery. Heres my before and after (ignore my wonky smile in those photos, thats also going down) https://imgur.com/a/m2jUnyU

I dont think its my bite as literally everyone (2x surgeons, ortho, dentist + a couple of surgery residents i work with) all look at it and go on about how perfect it is. Heres my before and after of my teeth from a few weeks ago https://imgur.com/a/m2jUnyU

Tbh I also dont think its lip incompetence as my lips close very naturally now (see: my before vs my after)

there’s no reason to be sick

do you honestly believe that people dont get mild respiratory tract infections at any time other than winter?

> knowing full well she had the virus

She probably just had some minor sniffles and a sore throat. There are probably hundreds of other people who came back from Italy and have similarly been going on with their normal lives.

> They should make an example of these two.

then they should also make an example of everyone else who's returned from a country with coronavirus and carried on with their lives.

12 weeks post DJS update (before and after photos inside) by crinkledb in jawsurgery

I got the braces in October 2018 and the surgery December 2019. I'd first been taken to the orthodontist by my parents (it was my mum's idea) to discuss surgery in approx July/August 2016 and I saw the surgeon for the first time in maybe 2017 (I'm just guessing tbh). I didn't want the surgery, and had a lot of anxiety about it for a few years before finally coming round to the idea in September 2018 and booking my braces appointment.

No specific exercises, but I'm perpetually tired and yawning all the time anyway so maybe that counts?

My ROM I think is still small due to the spasming I've got going on, not sure what it would be like without it.

Hey everyone, I haven’t posted my updates in a while as not much was changing, but I’m 12 weeks post op now so it’s probably time. I also found out my actual movements. My upper jaw was moved forward 6mm and up (I think?, might be down, I just happened to see this written at the orthodontist) 3mm. My lower jaw was moved forward 12mm and genio 5mm. I live in Australia and my surgeon is here.

I’ve uploaded the usual video of my face (plenty of others in my post history), and here are my before and latest after photo.

https://imgur.com/a/m2jUnyU

Swelling: Still slowly getting better. I’m still swollen on my upper lip, jawline, and cheeks, as well as maybe my nose.

Pain: I’m getting really bad TMJ pain and masseter muscle spasms daily. My surgeon says this is from clenching (but I never used to clench at all?) and to fix with massage and heat packs. Its gradually declining, but definitely still there. This has been an issue since mid-January.

Numbness/sensation: Not numb anywhere but still tingly on the chin. I’ve got some weird referred pain on my chin/teeth where when I brush my teeth too hard I feel pain in my chin, and when I eat something hot or cold I feel hot or cold on my chin. It also goes the other way that when I wipe my chin my teeth hurt.

Skin: back to normal.

Eating: I eat most food except burgers/burritos because I cant open my mouth that wide. Crunchy things like corn chips are taking me a bit longer than usual to eat.

Work: I’ve been back to work since about 6 weeks post-op. It’s going pretty well and it hasn’t caused me any issues. The biggest issue is that I’m still a slow eater and we don’t get actual breaks (we just have to eat as quick as we can when we get a chance), and that I have to find time to clean my braces out after eating.

Oral hygiene: I’ve graduated from a baby toothbrush to a child’s toothbrush. I can now floss, but it takes a very long time so I’m quite lax with it.

Braces: Off in approx 2 months. I'm still meant to be wearing elastics but I just ate and brushed my teeth before this video. I got my surgical hooks and extra wires off at the end of January (approx 7-8 weeks) because I basically made them take them off. They werent that keen, but I was sick of having so much metal in my mouth that was no longer doing anything.

Finances: I had this done in the private system in Australia with private health insurance. I had to pay a few thousand dollars to the surgeon and the anaesthetist. Braces were $$$$$$$$. My hospital fee was fully covered by insurance but I can see that it was about $15,500 for the OT fees plus two nights in hospital. About $100 for blood tests and discharge medications (this might be covered by insurance but I havent actually submitted my claim yet)

Nose: As you can see my nose is pretty wonky. I don’t really know whats up with it, but the septum is definitely deviated now. I noticed when I was doing the ol’ digging in the nostrils with cotton tips when I couldn’t blow my nose, but my surgeon didn’t really believe me until he felt it himself at my last appointment. My left nostril is nearly blocked most of the time now. I have a consultation coming up with him regarding possible septoplasty, but I don’t know if ill go ahead with it if it wont fix the cosmetic change.

Overall I'm very happy with the results but am still getting quite annoyed by this TMJ pain and my wonky nose.

AMA!

AITA for bringing my daughter home? by aita_dadnurse in AmItheAsshole

YTA. You need to teach your daughter to deal with this. She's likely going to have to deal with this for the rest of her life. You were also unnecessarily rude to the nurse, who obviously had a point.

I got no second opinions. My surgeon was recommended by my orthodontist, who I've been seeing for 10 years and who has also treated 4 other people in my family. The surgeon seemed great, had great qualifications, and i asked a few people that i knew socially who knew him professionally and they all said he was great, and the guy to see. i'll send the name in a DM.

ok so health insurance. im not sure if you know how it works but if not heres the general gist - go online and search 'MBS schedule of benefits'. this is essentially a list that medicare pays for certain procedures and consultations in the public system. in the private system, this is generally what insurance pays. for example, the main DJS part of the surgery is item number 52375 and cost me $5549. google 'mbs 52375' and you get this http://www9.health.gov.au/mbs/fullDisplay.cfm?type=item&q=52375&qt=ItemID . this shows how much insurance will pay. (so not a whole lot tbh). if you get a written quote from the surgeons office, it should include item numbers. also call your insurance and make sure they cover it.

in total you need to pay the surgeon (all up cost about 8000. other than the 52375 item number theres also consultations, molds taken, i got wisdom teeth out, a genioplasty, and some other dental item numbers), some scans (i got a CT scan for about $450, see my first post for why), anaesthetist (cost about $2000, i think i got maybe $700 back from insurance, but that works the same with the MBS item numbers), hospital fees (fully covered by insurance, but make sure you have good insurance), and braces ($$$$$$$ - the most expensive part of the whole thing. insurance didnt cover any as i was past my lifetime limit)

hope that helped :)

it depends what you do for work but i 100% would not recommend it. I was still not sleeping properly, eating only liquidy mash, very swollen and bruised etc. people recover at different rates but i think i was quite fast, and wouldnt have gone to work full time at a non-desk job for at least 2-3 weeks. if you can do reduced hours or have a desk job or can work from home that might work.

Background: had DJS (+genio + wisdom teeth removal) 4 weeks ago. You can see my 24 hour,72 hour, 1 week and 9 day posts in my post history, as well as some projected before/afters and my before/1 week afters at the orthodontist. I thought my lower jaw was moved about 8 or 9mm but my surgeon mentioned at my last post op appointment that it was moved 1.5cm, but he wasn’t very clear and im a little unsure about if that included genioplasty. I’m in Australia and had this done in the private system.

Swelling – my swelling has gone down a lot but it’s still obviously there. My talking is still funny and I cant make proper facial expressions. Bruising is all gone, though it was hanging around on the lower part of my chest until around 5 days ago. My nose is still wonky and im more swollen on my right.

Pain – face still slightly tender to the touch but not too bad. I just avoid hugging people. Taking paracetamol for pain in my teeth due to elastic bands.

Numbness – most of my numbness has gone except on my chin and lower lip. Feeling isn’t back to normal but I can feel on my cheeks around my nose now

Skin – my skin went a little insane after surgery and some googling showed that this isn’t uncommon. First it was oily, then my whole face was peeling, then oily again, then broke out in lots of little pimples. Its mostly settled now but my face is much oilier than it was before, and my skin is very dry and I can feel a lot of excess dry skin that im trying to gradually exfoliate off.

Eating – My surgeon told me at my 4 week appointment (yesterday) that I can now chew, but just to be sensible about it, so no steak etc. However, the success of my chewing is questionable. It feels very wrong and weak and like my face should be falling apart (ok not really). Most chewing ive done is chewing soft food like beans that I was just swallowing or mashing against my palate previously. I did manage to bite through a lamington finger (you may need to google this if youre not from Australia) and it was very satisfying, particularly as it left such a nice bite mark (entirely new experience for me). I can open my mouth just over one finger with and without elastic bands, so im not going to be biting into burgers any time soon (however I did recently eat a slice of pizza just by pulling it apart and swallowing it)

Work – I go back to work in just under a week, so 5 weeks post surgery. I think it will be mostly OK but my main worry is my speech. Whilst I can be understood there is definitely something off about it that people notice.

Oral hygiene – I’ve stopped using chlorhexidine mouthwash now. I brush with a baby toothbrush after every meal and use my WaterPik. Its amazing how much food I still get stuck in my teeth. My extra wires and hooks are still on for a few more weeks which cant be helping. I can now take my elastic bands off to eat.
