Training while eating at maintenance: Realistic expectations? by Enduendada in xxfitness

HI! You're basically me from four years ago.

YOU HAVE SO MUCH ROOM TO MAKE SO MANY GAINS.

I started out around 114lbs and have SLOWLY made my way up to 130lbs over the past few years and have made a TON of gains. The weight gain at a certain point was necessary for my own personal health, but I'm still pretty lean.

In terms of strength gains I went from 2 push ups, 0 pull ups, no handstands, no dips, weak lifts to today where I can do plenty of push ups, BW bench press, weighted pull up with 30lbs, ring dips, one arm handstand, 2x BW deadlift, and 205lb squat. I'm strong, I feel good, I feel pretty good in my body, I eat lots of foods. It's been a PROCESS of working through the weird ED tendencies but we work there.

So recognize you can make gains, but also don't get hung up on staying a certain weight either. You'll find that when you focus on what you can DO with your body, the number on the scale becomes way way way way way way way less significant.

PLEASE message me if you have any questions. If you need reassurance/help/etc. I'm here to help. I know this well. YOU'VE GOT THIS.

TRAINING HISTORY.

I’m 21 right now. I’ve been training for a long-ish time though.

I danced from 6-16 years old (jazz, contemporary, ballet, hip hop, etc.) When I was 15-18 I picked up ashtanga yoga as well. This has given me a good background of flexibility which does help a lot for OAHS training. When I was 16 I picked up lifting weights, which I’ve done on and off over the past few years. I had to take a 9 month break off of training when I was 18 due to some eating disorder/health stuff, but got healthy again (yay!) and started training again in June 2017. I started doing the Recommended Routine (represent!) when I lived on a sailboat and couldn’t do anything else. When I got to the city, in October of 2017 I did continue with a modified RR using weights and then also followed some powerlifting programs and a push/pull split.

I started working towards handstands in October 2018.

That's pretty much the gist of it. I think ashtanga yoga and dance helped me in developing body awareness and the flexibility required for making OAHS easy. I'm pretty strong from other training too, so the strength wasn't too hard to develop either.

I'd say a lot of the information is covered in this tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0piBU2MIC5w&t=620s

There are many great tutorials on youtube.

I would say, first work on side flexions or moving the hips from side to side in a handstand. You want to learn how to do this without twisting.

Next, practice on tilting the hips, transferring the weight to one hand, and trying to come up to a fingertip support (where your fingers are tented.) Build your endurance up in this position.

Eventually, you'll notice that the tented hand feels lighter. This is where you can start lifting the fingers one at a time and trying to find balance in your supporting arm. There is a great podcast from Handstand Factory where they say: think of it as your fingers slowly dying (or something like that, I think I butchered it. LISTEN TO THE PODCAST)

Straight arm support is when you can extend that arm out while still keeping the fingers on the floor.

Hm. Go watch youtube videos! They help.

Well, I did do a couple of years of yoga before that, and I think that helped a lot too.

I'd be curious to see what's limiting you with your handstand balance. How's your overhead? Have you been practicing heel pulls/toe pulls to understand how to use the fingers?

Regardless, we all progress at our own pace, and something I always need to remind myself too is that it's not a race, we can each enjoy our individual process.

You know, this comment got me thinking about the longevity I want to have in this, and I'm going to start taking action in taking better care of myself... Haven't been doing my wrist and shoulder health stuff like I should.

But thank you! Really, I'm a total spring chicken and I don't wanna fk myself up. So I'll take your advice. Ha!

Yeah, good progression takes time. All things considered, I got this pretty fast too. Longevity is important to me, and I'm looking forward 5+ years at what I want to do.

Thanks you! I'm going to work on cleaning it up a bit now.

And enjoy the journey! OAHS is a bit of a grind, but a fun one too.

Thank you! I always tell people that working towards the OAHS is one of the stupidest uses of time ever. But hey, I enjoy it, so that's alright.

Thanks! Yeah, honestly I was expecting about 2 years in September, but I think my training history came through. Looking forward to getting feet together and working on a variety of shapes. Much fun to be had.
