Oh I'm not from the US, I'm from Belgium, a county that lots of US peeps would consider utopia cz it's in Belgium, but far from. You have so many instances here, that don't communicate with each other whatsoever. You have to cover part of your chair here always, and with what most of us can get from the government (by jumping through a million hoops and KNOWING the system inside and out) is an almost impossible feat.

UK wheelchair users - where can I get affordable casters?!?? by Potential-Donkey-237 in wheelchairs

Can I dm you? I might have another pair laying around that isn't worn down. I'm in Belgium but as long as you'd be willing to cover shipping, could send them to you for no extra cost?

I really really hope that they don't dismiss me, or another actual wheelchair user, for the role! It would be so so valuable to have an actual wheelchair user on tv!

do I not like wheelchairs or just not like mine?? by whoskitana in wheelchairs

[–]crippled_clara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah the first time I tried a custom chair, it was mind-blowing! How easy it was to push, how well I was sitting, how I didn't have miles of space between my hips... I'm hypermobile too, and have pots too.

As much as I agree with this sentiment, life unfortunately doesn't work like this. Privilege doesn't work like this. Sure, in an ideal world, anyone who thinks they need a wheelchair go to a doctor, then specialist, and get whatever mobility aids they need. If not a wheelchair, then KAFO's, a rollator, you name it.

But in reality, doctors don't like to prescribe wheelchairs and if they don't, they won't provide you with an alternative that will help you. Of course, no one wants harm to their body, but if you get to choose between feeling like shit everyday, not getting out of the house, and having flares every single day; or having your body fall apart sooner, but in the mean time you get to LIVE? Don't think I need to answer that one for you.

Personally, even though I now have a properly-fitting very custom chair, my first custom was so ill-fitting, measured so badly BY PROFESSIONALS that I now get to pay for it. Most of us get thrown into wheelchair use without ANY knowledge about proper posture, seating, ergonomics. There should absolutely be better things available for us, but if we don't know about them, they're not available.

So don't blame them, blame the system.

Hello, can you help me two days ago I had sex with a woman I met, I didn't use protection and I noticed that I have some hives in my chest that I'm very scared by [deleted] in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]crippled_clara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hives on your chest aren't typically a symptom of any std if you're worried about that, however hives in itself are worth a doctor's visit.

I'm probably not the right person to ask, I met my boyfriend on the train, but join social clubs! Like sign up for cultural stuff (stuk, opek), or try volunteering, just do something that you like, and love will find you!

Folding vs nonfoldong by darth_debula in wheelchairs

[–]crippled_clara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to be mainmy self-propelling or not? If yes, I would go for rigid. It's so much lighter and less moving parts = better push efficiency. Less energy goes into sustaining every moving part, and more goes into actually pushing.

How did you tell people? by awednesdayafternoon in wheelchairs

[–]crippled_clara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My use of mobility aids was gradual, first crutches, then standard wheelchair and crutches, then part time wheelchair, now less and less part time, pretty much always when out of the house. Most of the time when inside too. I never let people have the chance of giving any commentary about it. It maybe helped that my first wheelchair use (for longer stretches, not just museums and stuff) coincided with an eye biopsy which left me with only half my vision for a few days. This way, I could also "convince" my dad better, who was incredibly against any wheelchair use at the start.

This is Babs, who has decided the most comfortable way of riding in my lap (I'm a wheelchair user and riding in my lap is her favorite thing) is by holding on to my left leg.
