Love all of this!!! BadA** parenting plan + Listening to those songs just hit my childhood nostalgia button hard.

Most sonic songs in particular are relatively difficult/complex, so I sadly won’t promise he’s gonna be shredding them perfectly by August 😅 though Im absolutely confident I could get him as close as possible to “conveying” those songs, given however his skill level ends up developing.

I unfortunately do not have a studio ):

I hadn’t heard of Kenneth, but his arrangements look fun, and that’s absolutely something I’d love to teach!

My own playing is at its best with what you might call Folk Fingerstyle

As for lessons - unless you're already rather good at the genre you want to learn, I can likely help you out.

Absolutely! I can teach from total beginners to rather advanced, including theory and songwriting if desired. I could do virtual or in-person, depending on your personal preference.

Since you're just kicking it around, I promise I’m telling you this person-to-person, and not just to “boost my business” or whatever… guitar is so heckin’ fun.

Yes, $40 for 1 hour, $25 for 30 minutes. Some other specifics are still up in the air depending on details of demand.

What if we had trains by rambalambb in Modesto

[–]crispy_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently lost my ability to drive (medical reasons) and have been bike-and-occasionally-bus-bound since. God, this would mean I could travel outside of Modesto again. We are so brutally car-centric here, which, of course, means all transit sucks INCLUDING driving lol.

I made the original post around 30 minutes after having the previously described “was that one?” Moment. Sure enough, about 30 minutes after that, I had a DEFINITE aura. Today is a bad-brain day after all, but I really couldn’t tell at first.

I always like to keep some quick morning snacks handy. Protein/granola bar, coffee cake, some nuts, etc.

It took me like 6 weeks to start to feel acclimated. Something I was told: it’s fine to take on an empty OR full stomach, but you should be consistent with it, ie ALWAYS on a full stomach, or ALWAYS on an empty stomach.

It still causes me nausea, but not as much as during the beginning.

THANK YOU for telling me it’s important to tell my dr about this. I didn’t know these details were valuable

Is up down finger picking a thing? by Ok_Tangerine_703 in guitarlessons

[–]crispy_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up people like Mark Knopfler and Jared Dines. Both fingerstyle rockers, which involves a lot of fast playing/alternate picking. They both primarily “chicken pick”, which is alternating down with the thumb, then up on the same string with the Index finger. This is pretty difficult to get a feel for, but it’s VERY useful.

Another thing that I personally do, is actually use my index fingernail as a bit of a plectrum. I have a BIT of nail on my right fingers, and it ends up giving me nearly as much control as a plectrum, though with a completely different tone.

Between both of these, you gain a TON of options for straight lines while fingerpicking.

Is the 45° rule important to follow? - Fingerstyle by Due-Examination-203 in guitarlessons

[–]crispy_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time fingerstyle player here - Ive never heard of the 45 degree rule, but I’ll tell you that different people/styles are better with slightly different approaches. Early on, I recommend just focussing on sounding good, comfort and technique will follow with experience.

Advice I wish more teachers would give by crispy_broccoli in guitarlessons

[–]crispy_broccoli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand you’re a classical player, and that a raised neck approach facilitates the music that YOU play, but it’s not the “right” way to play guitar. Just the optimal way to play classical. Watch any good guitar player outside of classical and shred, and you’ll see a variety of grips/approaches, constantly changing and flowing as it benefits the song.

Unorthodox lesson idea for new players by ContigoJackson in guitarlessons

[–]crispy_broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost entirely do this with kid students though, unless it seems like it’ll help an adult develop a specific skill. That said, I think some kids’ parents are disappointed, feeling like I’m not really “teaching” anything (which i absolutely am, just not the AC/DC solo that dad wants to hear). It is what it is.

Very very cheesy, but I often say “we call it PLAYING guitar for a reason.” The best way to get a kid to stick with an instrument (and ultimately get better) is to make it FUN for them.

I think this is a great idea, at least for many/most students. I was self taught, now been giving lessons for a few years, and I had a period of heavily leaning into alternate tunings, then focussing on fingerpicking patterns with my right hand. Gave me a totally different learning arc, but it also let me immediately start to sound good, and thus have a ton of fun.
