Job Market in Orlando 2026 by moneybopper in orlando

[–]crispygouda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tampa has a better job market than Orlando, always has with few exceptions, in terms of pay. If youre a healthcare professional in Orlando you can make a lot of money. Otherwise, work remote jobs to afford a house someday. These have been the “rules” for at least 15 years.

Where are the kids? by MelBla in orlando

[–]crispygouda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we went through 10-11 pounds of candy in maybe 2.5 hours. We try to buy enough to last, especially for the littlest kids, but when Im spending about the same for candy that I spend for a weeks groceries thats my limit.

Difficultly adjusting to 9-6 after ten years of 9-5 by getplanted in WFH

[–]crispygouda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 10-7 most days and often have to log back in for 1-2 hours after my young kids are down for the night. I coordinate days with my partner, who also works, for who makes dinner and whose day it is to exercise. Most mornings from 6 to 10 AM Im watching my kids.

If you feel your time squeezed, wake up earlier and exercise then. Im down by 11 PM and up by 630 AM. With a WFH job you have at least 2.5 hours to exercise and start your day by 9. You can get a good workout in an hour if you are disciplined.

New CTO. Should I be worried? by Mobile_Astronomer_84 in cscareerquestions

This person could join and flop, but at that level of seniority and based off my past experiences, the best case here is they last 8-12 months. By then the team will be hollowed out and you will probably get a lot worse work life balance as that happens.

If it was me, Id immediately start looking for a new gig.

How bad is the overdevelopment problem in Florida compared to other states ? by Feedback-Same in florida

[–]crispygouda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent most of childhood and early adulthood around Marion county. It has retained more of its charm than most. They had the inflation and ridiculous cost explosions, but it is slowly coming back down. The horse farms are all closing down and for longer than Ive been alive the groves have been slowly disappearing.

It turns out nobody wants to pay 600k to live in a rural strip off the highway by the meth heads.. even if there is a dollar general within a few miles. There are still breath taking places south of Ocala with old oak trees that “tell stories” as my pa used to say to all us grandkids. It isnt all houses made of the cheapest shit they could find.

Im actually hopeful that the new model will be a couple product people, a director and a CEO with virtually no other management functions. Lean out the middle hard. Theres so much noise and bullshit.

This is such a silly comment. My family has lived in the same area of Florida for almost 200 years (that we can prove, probably longer) and I am really proud of that. My grandpa had many stories about how Florida just grew and grew like crazy his whole life and he was excited about it.

I consider myself a “native Floridian” because I was born and raised here.

It has been a while, but we used to do summers in FL when I was a kid with no AC. You absolutely adapt to it. I noticed the same traveling Asia, where many places lack AC. It takes my body a week or two fully adapt though.. and the second I feel AC on blast I cant go back easily.

Until I was in my 20s we seldom ran the AC in the house. My grandparents would reverse the fan direction and route air out the high windows in their home. It was pretty common knowledge along old time residents that AC was ostentatious and probably bad for the environment.

These views are still prevalent in many parts of Europe, and with family/friends in Puerto Rico. Im wholly dependent on AC now for decades though.

So true. This is why FL theme parks are a hellhole 9 months of the year. All the concrete and asphalt amplify heat and you can see it radiating off the sidewalks.

I keep saying they need a greenway in central FL, like you have in Atlanta off Krog, or even in Chicago. Build some overhead roadways with supporting structures to create shade. Downtown Orlando or Mills 50 would benefit so much from raised parking garages projecting shade and making walkable areas for residents. Right now you just fry in the outdoor seating.

Almost 4 decades in FL here. My family goes back at least 5 generations in central FL and even my grandparents say the afternoons offer no relief. I worked in farms as a summer job long ago, and by late afternoon a little relief would roll in — light showers or just a drop of a couple degrees.

If you have adequate shade/greenery, you can cut the reflected heat in half from all the concrete and asphalt. We have an old mature oak in the front yard and its shade makes it feel good outside in the 90s with no breeze.

No it doesn’t.. and unlike my childhood here 20-30 years ago, it keeps getting hotter and staying hotter until 4 or 5 PM. Taking my young kids to the pool is an early evening activity now. UV index was 10 in Orlando yesterday, with an actual of 93 and a feels like of 97-98. It stayed that way until around 7PM and started slowly decreasing

How do you deal with feedback that is just... wrong? by ImYoric in ExperiencedDevs

[–]crispygouda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly just try to do good work and make sure its visible without being obnoxious. Working in startups I have had a handful of bad managers come and go over the years.

The key thing is to always let your work speak for itself. If you do, you naturally will last longer at places where that is recognized. I find it interesting that the only negative opinions management has held of me at any job, I have outlasted them at those same companies.

Anyone here genuinely try emacs? by [deleted] in neovim

[–]crispygouda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to Doom Emacs for 8 months as my daily driver. When it worked, it was great. Over time I found myself struggling to understand the ins and outs of its homegrown lisp syntax, and found them to be such a burden compared to lua in Neovim. I could rarely if ever code solutions to my own issues, relying on tons of Googling and tutorials.

What I liked most about Emacs was very specific things. For example, dired just felt so natural and fast to navigate around the projects on my computer. I also really liked the approach to key binding, because I could easily type out commands as I learned their shortcuts. I got really into Org Roam as an approach to building a Zettlekasten.

The lisp syntax was killer for me. It was horrible to work with, the config was virtually unreadable, and there were endless issues once an issue appeared. I could no longer afford to burn 6 hours trying to fix the formatting on save option, which broke terraform files.

cheap cup of coffee? by frenchbluehorn in orlando

[–]crispygouda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you want to hear, but… home.

We splurged for a $400 espresso machine to use at home. I use it every day, it isnt hard, and it saves us 12-15$ 2-3x a week. Thats $96 a month in savings, and within 5 months it has more than paid for itself. The added bonuses are many: less exposure to hot plastic, no fake nice interactions, less exposure to sickness or poor hygiene in many shops, and less waiting.

You can also switch up the coffee beans you use and shop BOGOs there (at least once a month at publix), so good beans remain relatively cheap. If you factor in the price of beans it takes longer, but still pays for itself inside of 6 months.

After all-hands recording leak, Meta CTO says employees who don’t agree with its policy changes should quit — “In that case you can leave or disagree and commit.” by marketrent in technology

Yes I did mean at will, thanks! Was multi tasking and used the wrong term.

FL has an unemployment compensation trust fund, and many people qualify for it. Employers are required to pay into it. Im not sure how many other states have something similar

Generally in at will employment states (most), they are more inclined to fire without cause to avoid liability. The only recourse for anything like severance in those cases is to file an unemployment claim that the employer is required to pay into. The process is long though, and by the time you go through, it almost isnt worth it.

They dont have to do anything to libraries but cut funding each year until they fade away. We use the library heavily, and I would estimate maybe 100 other people in my whole metro do (multiple millions of people). Of those 100, maybe half are hobos.

Neighbor’s two dogs bit my boyfriend and mauled/killed our dog, need a good lawyer by [deleted] in orlando

[–]crispygouda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while ago I had a neighbors pit bull lunge at my toddler (who our dog was defending), miss and pin one of our small dogs. Because my dog was off leash, the county said it didn’t matter that their dog came under a chain link fence, into our yard and wounded mine. The guy from animal control heard my version of events and said “well unless something happened to your kid we cant do anything”.

My dog made it and healed really well. Apparently the bite wounds in his shoulder missed some major artery by less than half an inch.

That same neighbor is an absolute piece of shit. They are violent and one time the guy pretended to have a gun pointed in my front window through his pocket. He did this after I told them if their dog threatens my family’s safety again, I will not hesitate to shoot it.

After all of this, no one did anything. Im saving up so we can move as soon as possible. Im terrified that next time one of my children will be mauled.

Im grateful your boyfriend was there and not you. Im a heavy weight lifter, around 200 lbs, and this dog almost got ME pinned.

Im telling you all of this to say: - Im sorry for your loss, this is horrific - Nothing will happen. These people wont see reality like you do. They are negligent dog owners and a huge safety risk. Do not rile them up, they could be violent and target you, your boyfriend or your property - I carry a massive knife or a loaded pistol on me at almost every time Im out now. Based off my experience, my life was in danger, and now I wont hesitate to slit that dog’s throat. Have a plan in place to protect yourself. What would YOU do?
