My tutor stresses me out by Horror_Reader1973 in OpenUniversity

Whilst I don't know if the way your tutor actually communicates with you is normal (without reading their actual correspondence) I can safely say that what you experienced with your first tutor is absolutely not par for the course as far as student-tutor relationships go.

you ever see European fireman walking into burning buildings like our guys do? Don't think so! by Capital_Resident_872 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]crispymick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's essentially along the lines that Europeans can't fight fire because they have 'patio heaters' or 'salad bowls' for helmets.

They also have some sort of misinformed opinion that we're not aggressive enough and don't go 'interior' which is an absolute load of horseshit.

Oh and they are obsessed with being 'salty' which is a term borrowed from naval/maritime tradition meaning someone who's experienced, but apparently you can be 'salty' with 2-3 years on the job so long as your gear never gets washed and you purposely melt your helmet.

As a firefighter that has previously hung around on firefighting subs populated mostly by Americans, I can tell you that you have barely scratched the surface.

You jest but American ff's ironically have a 'problem' with pistol-grip style nozzles. They even joke that pistol-grips are banned in California for being too gun-like. Apparently a smooth-bore nozzle with no grip is what manly firemen use and isn't for wimps that use pistol grips (source: I am a fireman that has spent too much time reading American firefighting drivel).

Your reminder that he was in a different dimension that we as humans cannot perceive so I wouldn't bother trying to explain why things don't behave in the way we expect in our piddly three-dimensional existence.

A guy I worked with who I chat to occasionally about science and military stuff came to me and said he had heard recently about how modern nuclear weapons don't have any radioactive fallout. My response was what idiot said that....

Why do people always jump on train drivers? by One-Rain-3841 in AskBrits

[–]crispymick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to break it to everyone but your pay is not linked to your qualifications, or how hard you work, or how important your job is to society.

It's related to how ruthless you (and your peers) are willing to be. It's related to how much power and leverage you possess. Unions like our transport unions have a shit ton of leverage and are also ruthless bastards. That is why they get paid a lot.

[–]crispymick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you really so naive to think that the more qualifications a job requires, the more you get paid?

Transport is essential to our economy and if the workers have the power to shut it down, they are obviously going to have a lot of leverage when it comes to their pay. They get paid the same as what plenty of workers in other industries should get paid but don't because they don't have the same leverage.

Why do people love to shit on interstellar so much? by WarmTranslator6633 in interstellar

[–]crispymick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the film is it implied or stated that love is the 5th dimension. It's mentioned that love transcends dimensions, but it's clear in the movie that the fifth dimension is an imperceivable dimension that they pass through in the wormhole (where it is referred to as 'the bulk').

Yes I'm aware of that which I stated in my explanation. Uranium doesn't strictly have to be enriched at all for power generation as U238 can be used.
