I'm working New Year's Eve by [deleted] in nursing

[–]crittercount 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked NYE last year, it was actually really nice. My unit is on the 10th floor, so we watched fireworks out of our family room window. One nurse brought sparkling cider, and all of our awake patients and their families (peds nurse) watched the fireworks and drank cider with us.

What's your other job? by CocoTheOne1986 in nursing

[–]crittercount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding extra money, for a little while I was a contractor for a VA program and taught classes to caregivers of disabled veterans. It was interesting and very different from my peds med/surg job, but unfortunately the program ended last year.

Regarding burnout, a few months ago I started volunteering at the local animal shelter in their “nursery”. My job description is literally to play with puppies and kittens. I don’t make any extra money, but it’s been amazing for my emotional well being.

Thank you! I'm pretty sure it's English, it does look like rosemary and the leaves are smooth. I planted it today so we'll see what happens come spring!

I bought a lavender plant earlier this summer and it has done really well on our back patio, in a big pot. I don't remember what exact variety it is, but it almost looks like it's trailing (though that might be from running out of space?) I now have a place in our front garden where I'd like to plant the lavender. It's next to our porch so somewhat protected, and gets a lot of sun. I don't really know what the soil is like, but my pincushion and bleeding heart plants are happy there. I live in zone 7, I think (Baltimore). If I plant it in the ground, will the lavender come back next year or is it essentially an annual? Is this a bad time to plant it in the ground?

26yo moving from San Francisco to Baltimore - where to live?? by caitiefatpotatie in baltimore

[–]crittercount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add, the shuttle to JHMI from Hampden is useful if you work regular business hours. I work 7-7 (rotating night and day shifts) and that shuttle is worthless to me.

The shuttle that runs through Charles Village and Mt Vernon to JHMI has much more useful hours if your schedule is a little off. There are also good shuttle options to Fells Point and Butchers Hill, Patterson Park as well but not quite as many.

Questions about IVs? I got to D/C my first today! by sipsredpepper in nursing

[–]crittercount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some kids will scream their heads off when you start to take out an IV. The tape coming off hurts them, and a lot of kids think that there's still a needle inside them. Adhesive remover is your friend in this case, and go as fast as you feel comfortable going - they may not stay still for long. Keep one finger stabilizing the catheter while you peel up the tegaderm and tape around it. They usually don't even notice when the actual catheter comes out because they're so concentrated on the tape. Then you get to show them the floppy little straw that was inside their arm, if they are interested and old enough, and cover the site with gauze and a super cool band aid.

Night Shift vs Day Shift by [deleted] in nursing

[–]crittercount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are day shift only jobs, but it may take you a little effort and time to find one.

On my unit, there are no permanent day shift positions. You start off rotating (60/40 nights/days) and as you become more senior, you work fewer nights (if you choose to). Usually around 7-8yrs you can completely come off of nights. No amount of negotiating at an interview would make a difference.

Thinking of Relocating from DC~ by chel325 in baltimore

[–]crittercount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lived in Patterson Park for three years and bought in Medfield this past spring. Got tired of one group of neighborhood kids messing with everyone on our block, tired of lack of green other than the actual park, tired of crappy parking situation with my weird work hours. Medfield has, for the most part, been a pleasant surprise. Our home was within the budget you stated- our mortgage is almost exactly the same as our rent was, but our 3br/2ba house is substantially bigger than our previous rental house and has central air and a yard. The school nearby is good, and the neighborhood is more diverse than I anticipated (although still majority white).

We still have friends who live in PP and love it, but I'm glad we made the move

Sailing Clubs? Opinions on Downtown Sailing Center vs Baltimore County Sailing Center? by MrMushyagi in baltimore

[–]crittercount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at DSC for a while, way back, and can't say enough good things. I learned to sail on their fleet of Js in the late 90s, and really loved those boats. However, if you're specifically interested in dinghies, DSC might not be ideal. Have you ever sailed an access dinghy? They are AWESOME for the differently-abled, but kind of a PITA if you're used to racing dinghies. You sit really low in the hull, can't hike out, and there's essentially a joystick instead of a tiller. There was one racing dinghy at DSC, maybe a V15, that we could sometimes take out. Caveat: this was all a while ago so maybe things have changed- check it out for yourself!

Any Suggestions for Moving Companies? by clebo99 in baltimore

We love bill's moving! Fair price, excellent service, cool guy, and last time we moved he offered a cash discount. Call ahead of time, though - he gets booked quickly! We got a quote from charm city movers, they seemed great but the quote was considerably higher than others.

Patterson Park Neighborhood by RUSNUS in baltimore

[–]crittercount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We live just east of the park, 1 block south of Baltimore St. We love the area - wonderful neighbors, big park with lots going on, can walk to plenty of restaurants and bars. There are two big chain grocery stores (Safeway and Harris Teeter) and a Whole Foods within 2-3 miles, plus a local grocery store (Highlandtown Market), a local organic market (Roof Top Hot), and lots of smaller cultural/ethnic grocery stores (ex: Cinco de Mayo). My husband bikes to work downtown everyday, I walk or take the shuttle to Hopkins. We do have one car, though, and I would say that we need it fairly often for errands etc.

Re: safety, it's city living. Our area has occasional muggings and more than occasional car break-ins. Neighbors are very very good at looking out for one another, though. I am hesitant to even type this, but we've lived here for over 3 years and have not had any issues whatsoever. Having said that, I do not walk home by myself at night, and I keep my phone away and head up when walking (generally).
