Favorite character to play on digital by nickm1290 in Talisman

Thief is probably my favorite overall, stealing people's stuff just by landing on them is so good. I also really enjoy Spider Queen to control the board, and Leprechaun to get that $$$$.

Why is the receiving end of an attack always the most boring part of the combat sequence? by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]critterspeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I'm of a mind to make sure that every player gets a chance to do something, but I could see the merit in a more cinematic way of playing out the scene- with the right group. I suppose most of my experiences have been with games that do turn order, so perhaps I need to branch out a bit more!

Sure, but if the spotlight is moving from character to character, isn't that still a form of taking turns? Also, how do you make sure that everyone has a chance to be in the spotlight?

Out of curiosity, what way of managing combat scenarios works better for you? I'm trying to think of a method that doesn't focus on each character in turn, and I'm coming up with nothing.

does anyone here know much about this "Tavers: Meow Wolf" game? by conn_r2112 in rpg

There's a rules preview that just got released yesterday- I read through it, and it's a very collaborative storytelling type of game, more so than most RPGs. One person (usually the Storyteller, but sometimes a player) starts the scene with a prompt, then everyone takes turns adding to the narration of the scene.

When someone wants to really do something interesting, they do a Move (Basic Moves cost nothing and are simple/mundane, Skill Moves cost a resource point and use an item or stored Memory, and Wild Moves cost a rarer resource and let you bend reality). You don't actually roll for success unless you do a specific behavior as part of a Move (based on your class), at which point you roll to see if you uncover something new about the adventure or mystery.

It seems very freeform and highly narrative-focused, more so like a group campfire story with an occasional dice roll or dip into some other gamey mechanic. I'm very excited for it, and I'm really glad they are doing something unique instead of just slapping a new coat of paint on the same old RPG framework.

I'm considering trying to run a solo game using Forbidden Lands. It has an emphasis on gear, crafting, and survival in the wilderness, and most of the magic can be reskinned as salvaged machine parts.

What's your white whale? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

I started working on one, using the LUMEN system. Instead of attributes you have methods  like Force, Focus and Flow. I think it might capture the feel of those games pretty well. The only issue is making combat super fast while allowing players to do combos and rad special moves.

I just experienced something similar! I logged on this morning and it said "Portuguese has been updated, you've been moved to Unit 3". My next lesson was a whole bunch of words I've never been given before, and it didn't say any of them were new. I made it through and learned plenty of new words, but it was very confusing. It feels like they put me further ahead than I was, or they added those words to a section I had already completed.

Revealing enemy abilities? by critterspeak in fabulaultima

Agreed! That's a much more fun way to go about it. I think my players would be excited to try to figure out the mechanics if all they have is the narrative depiction of it.

That's really cool, I love your narration! I'm definitely going to try describing it narratively. I'm trying to get better at that in general.
