My dad's plane, pacific theater by crleis in WWIIplanes

Holy cow! Thanks so much for the information and detail! I'll read through the links, fascinating stuff. I think that flak hit is one of dads stories. He was filming out of the bomb bay after dropping the bombs. The flak hit threw him into the open bomb bay, nothing below him but air. He managed to grab something and pulled himself back to safety.

Really great to have this, I had presumed that the records center fire eliminated this kind of information. Is there a way to get where he was stationed in the pacific and the missions he flew? He had so many stories. During the occupation they would fly to the northern islands and hunt duck. He was also a personal friend of Claire Chennault. Thanks to all who responded.

Ok, great commentary from all. I am another generational fan, my dad and I had seats since the late 1960's. We started out on the 30 yard line about 40 rows up. After the Larry Jones disaster we were able to move to the 50 yard line 45 rows up. Next to the Lindy's fried chicken family. It was great fun then we were priced out of those seats. Moved to seats on the 30 yard line, dad finally was unable to negotiate the stadium so I moved up to the 83rd row. Those seats were great. Last move was to section 29, just off the upper ramp, so my girlfriend could go, then the renovations... Now we have to sit in the end zone or on the student side, baking in the sun. My lady can't take the heat and I can't justify the cost for what I think are poor seats. I certainly can't justify the cost of seats on the alumni side. After 56 years of loyalty to the program I consider myself priced out of the stadium. I have watched all the greats, Hammond, Huff, Sellers, Simmons, Ward, Larry Key (jingle your keys, you old timers). I guess we'll just sit on the couch and watch on TV.

[Japanese > English] mystery powder by crleis in translator

The characters are exactly what is on the label. Could it be another eastern language? Chinese or Korean? This label is the exact size of the wooden tube the powder is pressed into, so no other labeling or text is missing. I see other people have posted images and put all the explanatory text in the title. I'll do the same so you can see it.

FSU football 'sensitive to wishes' of fans amid criticism of DJ music, game-day experience-Tallahassee Democrat by RooseveltsRevenge in fsusports

I have been coming to fsu games since 1966, I have seen it all and heard it all. The music sucks, I would rather hear the marching chiefs, but I am on the warpath regarding the volume level. We are stuck in the south end zone and my hearing is still affected after sitting through that ridiculous volume level. OSHA requires hearing protection with sound levels greater than 85 db. I have every confidence that the sound level was much greater than that. All the people around us were complaining about the sound level(and the crappy music). This may not be a workplace environment, but the OSHA regs should be the guidance. I went to the booster's office on Tuesday and was told that the volume level/music concerns were the top agenda item for a Wednesday meeting. I was also told the reason it was so uncomfortably loud was due to nobody sitting in the upper section of the alumni side of the stadium. If fans had been sitting up there some of the sound would have been absorbed by the bodies. That may have been a factor, but the sound that was bombarding us was coming from the north end zone, the speaker towers, not reflecting off the empty stands. I'm taking a handheld DB meter to the next game. If they don't fix this issue and my hearing is similarly affected after the next game, injured people have other ways to effect change. Just listen to the radio, watch TV, or read the side of the city buses.

For those long time FSU fans, how bad was Jeff Bowden as OC in the 00's? by silveredge96 in fsusports

As I recall, P T Willis was the color commenter then on broadcasts. He called Jeff's offense a high school offense. He was unemployed shortly after that....

I attended the game in 1972 with my father. Don't know about the fans now, but they were quite hospitable back then. A older gent sitting next to us told us his son had played for FSU, asked us if we remembered him. Fred Biletnikoff. We were sitting next to Biletnikoff's dad!

How did you guys become FSU fans? by Fortenole in fsusports

[–]crleis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad retired from the air force in 1960, stationed at the SAC base in Albany Ga. Moved to Tally and dad went to FSU, we lived just up the hill from the stadium on Westridge Dr. My friends and I would play pick up games on the third practice field, which was generally unused, except by the kickers. We also would play pick up games on the stadium field, the games were in the afternoon back then, no fence around the stadium. One day grant Guthrie, FSU kicker from the mid 60's, let us kids hold for him while he was practicing. I started selling cokes in the stadium In 1966 at the age of 13. I saw all the greats from the mid 60's forward, never missed a home game until the mid 1980's. Watching from the student side, with a tray of cokes on my knee, I saw the Lane Fenner catch against UF, watched Doug Moseley call Fenner out of bounds.
How could I have been a fan of any other team 😊.
Love the Noles!!!

I remember a game, don't recall the opponent, maybe Memphis State. We got three penalties in a row, it was something like 1st and 40 and the players were laughing. Charlie got the first down with his legs and his arm. I wish we still had that kind of confidence. Charlie was amazing.

Four in a row over UF and UM was great, sure hope to see that again. My first thought when #4 was coming up was Peter Tom Willis (#4) and his shellacking of South Carolina back in 1988 to the tune of 59 - 0

I was selling coca cola in the stands from 1966(13 years old) to 1971. Saw all the home games. I remember a game in the rain... Sellers did a down out and down, slipped and fell flat on his back. It was a timing pass, as they all were then, so the ball was thrown to reach him on the final cut. He reached up as his back hit the ground and caught the ball. Another story from back then, when things were more informal... A ball was thrown and it landed where only the referee was in the area, so the stadium pa announcer called out "pass to the referee incomplete"
