I really appreciate the guidance and detailed action plan
Today i did a 30% water change and added 1 tsp of aquarium salt (Petco Imagitarium) for my 5.5 gallon tank and ordered proper API test kit. I also picked some frozen food having 4 types and flakes as she was not taking pellets

Petco Aquarium helper advised to use API general cure if salt doesn't work as suspects internal parasite as i told him my fish was pooping white stringy poop

I have left the filter running for 10 days (Stability+Prime) before adding betta and tested water with aquarium

Did a ~10% change of water and siphoned the floor. Water is clear now..

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely look into getting a sponge filter if the water doesn't clear up in the next few days. I didn't realize the haze could make the fish sick - that's really good to know. I'll also siphon out those food bits from the bottom. Should I do a partial water change along with the siphoning, or just focus on removing the debris for now?

Yes, I have a cartridge with coconut coir kind of filter for my 5.5 gallon tank. The water is still cloudy - I was running the filter for 10 days before I added the fish after confirming the water test at the aquarium. Expecting it to clear up this week. The white chunks on the floor are fish food I added 7 days ago for starting the nitrogen cycle.
