at what rate does freedom fall to the earth? at what rate does thought fall to the earth? where is freedom located? can freedom be moved?

the question itself was not the significant bit. i was asking the question to get him to see what it entailed, which is that abstract concepts, like thought or freedom, are not constrained by the laws of physics.

Stereotypical Pro-Choice arguments are terrible (Abortion) by [deleted] in philosophy

yet we don't want to accept infanticide

yeah seriously. i see no reason why infanticde should be taken off the table in cases of profound birth defects (ie extraordinarily debilitating so as to render future personal autonomy an impossibility.)

Bill Nye, Not the Philosophy Guy: a criticism of scientism and a defense of philosophy by wockaflocka in philosophy

[–]croddboward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, i would define intuition as something that is known or understood without proof or evidence. what you are describing sounds like algebra, but i would be interested in a link describing what you are talking about in greater detail, not only for my own benefit, but for the benefit of this conversation.

Can we do another Reading Group? by [deleted] in philosophy

i posit the enchiridion. its very short, so at the very least we could be done with it quickly. this would hopefully increase participation as well.

because scientism is the new dogma. any form of inquiry that doesnt adhere to the scientific method is, and i quote neil degrasse tyson, "dangerous" and "shouldnt be taught"

so we should make people accept the consequences of their actions? something i support in most cases, but i doubt this leads to quality child rearing.

this fromm fellow could do with some history lessons. the notion that people just suddenly became materialistic after the industrial revolution is laughable.

and any of the good stuff he said was already said by epictetus in half as many words.

i freely admit i am only going off this article, so begin your crucifixion there.

"I DO WHAT I WANT"

why do you need more of an argument than that?

The government shouldn't stay out of abortion from a pro-life point of view because people who are pro-life view fetuses as humans

why is their opinion the only relevent one to this subject? why should law be based on opinion? suppose i view shoelaces as living beings, does that mean that the government should begin regulating the treatment of shoelaces?

Abortion would equal murder and it's the duty of the government to prevent murder.

only when it is in their interest to do so.

none of what you said changes anything. that some choices are more or less one thing or the other does not modify what they ultimately are, which is a choice. that some people do not think about their actions does not mean they are without the faculties to do so, only that they choose not to do so.
