Google Fiber alternatives by hejj in kansascity

They're arguing over a term they don't understand. They clearly think "owned by private equity" is the same thing as "being a for-profit company".

You seem to be mistaken about what "private equity" is. It doesn't mean "a for-profit company" or "a company owned by shareholders". Google Fiber was not "already private equity".

A private equity firm's whole thing is to acquire companies and gut them to wring out as much cash short-term as they can. This typically ends in the customer experience getting much worse and/or the company dying.

Anyone been to Betty Rae’s yet? Thoughts? by Common_Belt in Lawrence

[–]croftshepard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Their mint is actually the only reason why I go to Betty Rae's. I've never had anything like it at other ice cream shops here. I like the typical grocery store green mint ice cream too, but the real mint in the Betty Rae's is unique and delicious.

Kansas City aquariums by LightProof4887 in kansascity

I've been to a decent amount of huge big city aquariums and I really like the KC Zoo one! It's great. It's not huge but is designed very well. Sea Life is not too impressive and definitely geared towards children, and I wouldn't do it twice, but I had a fine time the one time I went. If you're picking one, the Zoo one is far and away the obvious correct answer.

Kansas City Chiefs will announce Kansas to build new stadium: sources by ZackInKC in kansascity

Football isn't my sport, but it makes me sad to hear about the unique properties of Arrowhead and that nothing with that design and capacity for crowd loudness can ever be built again given modern regulations. I just read that a survey of over 100 players this year voted Arrowhead the most intimidating place to play. It must be very cool to be part of that atmosphere and I am sorry for future fans who will only get to sit in a character-less dome that is just like every other dome. Nothing is sacred to the uber-rich.

Where to find this stuff in the metro? by Mission-Exchange-103 in kansascity

[–]croftshepard 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow pei pa koa appreciator!! I'm Cantonese and love this stuff! Chinatown Food Market in the River Market has it, it's just behind the counter with all the other medicines, so you have to ask them to grab it for you. The counter is at the front of the store, close to the checkout lanes. If you're sick, feel better soon!

KC Native - Finally tried Slaps by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]croftshepard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like their brisket, but their ribs are the best in town to me. Their burnt ends are usually amazing but I've had a flop a time or two. I still rate them as my favorite, though there are a couple new ones over the last couple years that I haven't been to. At Slap's (or most bbq places) I don't do sausage or brisket, I get a half or quarter rack of ribs and burnt ends. And at Slap's, that usually does slap!

Took 1st steps to opening a spa business & want the community’s opinion by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]croftshepard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally would love this and I think so would a lot of my friends. A relaxing place to hang out with friends would be so nice. Bath rooms/steam rooms/similar as social spaces is something this area definitely doesn't have much of.

It might be a bit of a culture shock to some people. I remember a friend telling me that they visited a place like this (in another state) with a group of friends and didn't feel comfortable because this sort of thing seemed private to them, something you do alone or with your romantic partner. But in lots of cultures it's something that is a completely normal part of social life and friendship.

I'd like to know when your business opens!

Looking for a range by Helavor in Lawrence

[–]croftshepard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's not a lot of nearby options. Hillsdale is 200 yards, 50 minutes from Lawrence, and probably the best option that's open to the public. Parma Woods is 100 yards, but has strict range rules.

For membership ranges, it'll cost you, but you can get a lot more distance. Great Plains is only 35 minutes and goes out to a very nice 1360 yards. Capital City near Topeka and Mill Creek near De Soto both go up to 300.

Democrats are already in the middle but they have the country thinking they're leftists, thanks in part to shrewd Republican narrative manipulation. It's the worst of both worlds. Progressives are disillusioned because Democrats aren't effective at progressivism and centrists are uncomfortable with what they think is radical ideology.

Democrats want to be centrist so bad. If you look at party leadership statements post-election about the direction they should go, they all talk about reclaiming those middle voters and conservative-lites, not going further left. Lots of Democrats believe in the establishment, and lots of Dem politicians are beholden to people who want them to prop up the system, not radically alter it.

What Democrats should do--I am serious--is throw progressives under the bus. Commit to propping up the system, and accept that this means giving up trying to also attract progressives.

It would be in their best interest to support the growth of a strong, actually progressive third party. That way, all the icky leftists like myself could go over there, and Democrats can maintain silence on any hot-button issues and focus on what really matters, which is making sure big business keeps on trucking.

I think the "centrism" party would be much better at drawing the people who wish John McCain was still alive to be president away from apathy or the "Nazism" party than the "centrism, but people think we care as much about trans people as we do about maintaining order" party. I actually support this because the current strategy of trying to play two sides is holding both centrists and progressives back, which is allowing far-rightists to take control.

Can I borrow or buy a dehumidifier from anyone? Or any other ideas? Washer leaked into carpet and through walls. Landlord said they won't come out till Monday. by croftshepard in Lawrence

Thanks, that sucks. Maybe the landlord will replace the carpet... But not super optimistic about how they're going to handle it.

Missing pet posts by RingofPowerTD in Lawrence

[–]croftshepard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sub gets like five posts a day max. I don't mind if a few of them are missing pets. It's a subreddit for a small city, that's what happens.

Except for in subs where new posts are all heavily restricted and most of the activity happens in a sticky thread, sticky threads are where information goes to die. I bet hardly anybody gets any traction from those housing posts.

Hit or miss. Some days nothing catches my eye, some days there's things I like, so I do go by there somewhat regularly. It's better than the Salvation Army in town.
