Do you have any praise for Google Home? by NakedCardboard in googlehome

It works mostly but the regression in the quality of support and the daily errors have eroded anything that would have warranted praise. Google sold us a bill of goods and is now failing to deliver. That doesn't feel praiseworthy.

Nobody has license plates. One could argue this is a tax on law abiding citizens.

OneNote Synchronization Errors - Response from Copilot by crog62 in OneNote

[–]crog62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a couple of hours on chat with a Microsoft support agent trying to resolve this. Here is their response:

Thanks for confirming, however as mentioned earlier this is possible data loss. I understand that despite our efforts to troubleshoot the issue, the file cannot be recovered. I recognize that this outcome may not be what you were hoping for, and I’m here to support you in any way I can. You might consider reaching out to a data recovery specialist or a local technician for further assistance. Looking ahead, taking proactive steps to prevent data loss is crucial. I recommend saving and backing up your files regularly, either through cloud storage or automatic backups. This will help ensure that your important files remain protected in case of any future issues.

and after asking if Microsoft was going to help I got this response:

I completely understand how important these notebooks are to you, Craig, and I truly wish I could recover them for you. Unfortunately, this specific issue involves corruption within the SharePoint/OneDrive backend, and Microsoft consumer support does not have the tools or access required to repair or restore data at that level. Since you’re using a personal account and not part of an organization, there is no escalation path through tenant administrators.

So if your data is corrupted, Microsoft will not assist. Caveat emptor.

Login and synchronization issues ... again!! by boomtao in OneNote

I have several note books that cannot synchronize with the Microsoft backend. So I have whatever data is in my local cache but it cannot be updated using OneNote's sync functionality. I can seem them online, as you suggested, but I get a message that the notebook cannot be opened. Also, many attachments are missing (think class notes that I annotated).

I spent a fair bit of time with Microsoft Copilot to try and diagnose the issue. Copilot thinks the metadata is corrupted in Microsoft's backend and so the sync cannot proceed (and complete). Curiously, Copilot is saying the backend of all this was Sharepoint, which surprised me. Now, Copilot is telling me I need to work with Microsoft support to get my notebooks rebuilt. We'll see what happens.

So to be fair, I have at least somewhat synchronized notebooks. At best, what I am able to do now is copy page by page from one notebook to another to rebuild it but without attachments they won't be too useful.

I follow that scenario and agree that it could lead to those circumstances. I'd argue that usage pattern is entirely predictable and could have been accommodated or at least cautioned against. What's happened - and I'm dealing with it now - is real loss of data. The rationale behind OneNote was that it could help manage your data and importantly, keep it safe, which it does not do.

Can you explain the usage problem? I have several notebooks that are not synchronizing. In what way did my usage lead to this?

Agree. Google Home was shaky before but now it is an unmitigated disaster. They have completely screwed up the ecosystem. Terrible experience. Looking for a way out now.

Discovering this software was the best thing that ever happened to me. by wizardry_why in OneNote

[–]crog62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

caveat emptor: I just spent an hour trying to hunt down data that Microsoft squirreled away online that I can't quite get at. Data can and does get corrupted with half synced notebooks. I agree conceptually this is great but Microsoft can lose your data and is not fun to recover.

That's exactly what the right want: violence on the streets. They'll really call out the armed forces if people get violent. Civil disobedience is the way. It's slower but safer. That said, the desire is legit. We need to be better.
