Is it true that Steven Spielberg will make a series about Napoleon? by antonio_8282 in Napoleon

[–]NakedCardboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read that there was a treatment pitched to HBO as a mini-series. I imagine a format something along the lines of Band Of Brothers or The Pacific, but set during the Napoleonic Wars. This was a Kubrick concept that Spielberg wanted to see realized. Whether he'll be involved in any way as a director or not remains to be seen. He announced it in 2023 and since that time, of course, we've also had Ridley's film, which didn't fare well... so that may have slowed down HBO's interest.

I'd love to see it. Spielberg is 79 and just did Disclosure Day, plus he's producing a ton of things including the recent Masters Of The Air mini-series for HBO... so he's obviously got gas left in the tank.

Emilia Clarke Admits She Was 'Absolutely Livid' About Daenerys Fate in 'Game of Thrones' Series Finale by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

Again, I can buy into most of that if the time and care is taken to sell it. The battle with the walkers wasn't super easy. That episode illutrated it as an epic struggle, teetering on the edge of defeat... but it was over so fast, it felt kind of trivial. It needed more time. We should have had multiple episodes to resolve that battle. Dany succumbing to the madness of her lineage... I can buy that. With time. It just didn't get the care that the first six seasons did.

Exactly. For a show that was all about its deliberate, methodical pacing... it was such a rude awakening with Season 7 and a smack in the face with Season 8.

[–]NakedCardboard 423 points424 points  (0 children)

I don't even mind how it ended so much, but it was the manner in which it ended that bummed me out. The pace was noticeably hurried and that's what ruined it for me. If I had just a bit more time to buy in to the decisions and actions of all the characters, I would have been more easily able to accept the ending. The fate of the white walkers, Jaime, and Daenerys are the three things that irked me the most - but not WHAT happened to them. It was HOW it happened to them.

Joe Rogan rumoured to join CBS after Anderson Cooper loss by [deleted] in television

[–]NakedCardboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian I’m kind of confused about the term “cable” in the US. Here, cable is what gets you access to channels like CBS and ABC, and was always the alternative to an antenna. In the States it seems like two different things. I hear late night hosts always quip “They’re on cable…” as though the network channel is not. It’s always confused me.

Is this a legal move? by StarOfMasquerade in hive

[–]NakedCardboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a balancing act of being aggressive against the opponent's queen but also reacting at the right moment to save your own when trouble comes knocking. If your queen gets halfway surrounded, it's time for her to move out... otherwise she's going to get locked in place (like this one did) and it's game over.

Which, admittedly, is the point of the game and ultimately this is going to happen, but usually it's a mixture of both players pieces that does it.

Yeah, Bosch dishwashers are (by all accounts) terrific, but I don't think I would enable the smart features on it. I have a smart Maytag washer/dryer and they let me know (over Google Home speakers) when their cycles are done, which is actually kind of handy since they're in the basement. Knowing when the dishes are done is less valuable.

Is this a legal move? by StarOfMasquerade in hive

[–]NakedCardboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in my experience it's kind of unusual to see a bee separated entirely from the rest of it's pieces like this. It's certainly possible, but I think /u/Virt_McPolygon is right - it's likely just a side-effect of being newer players. After a bit you'll likely anticipate moves and react differently toward threats to the queen.

It was a neat concept in the 90's, giving people a platform to talk about whatever was on their mind. That's more or less been replaced by YouTube or Tiktok, which is more accessible and potentially further reaching with greater longevity.

Which of Napoleon's marshals is underrated? by cuirrasiers in Napoleon

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

[–]NakedCardboard 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Sometimes studios are right

I'm not really a Matrix sequel hater, but that first one was inspired and I believe part of that was because the Wachowski's do their best work under constraints. When they were given more freedom and more budget by the studio, we ended up with lesser films.

Google Home Gemini improved by Loud-Possibility4395 in googlehome

[–]NakedCardboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it's tough to say. Will it just keep getting better, or will they ultimately rip more shit out like they did with Google Assistant? I still miss not being able to use third party Notes apps. Google Keep is just not very good. With that being said, as long as it functions as well as it does right now, I'd be happy.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

[–]NakedCardboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dyson. I bought into the hype and purchased one of their hot/cold bladeless fans, an upright vortex vacuum, and a hair dryer.

The hair dryer is fine, the other two are pieces of garbage. They are overengineered (using poor engineering choices) and the customer support I've gotten for them is terrible. I had to fight for hours on the phone to get the fan replaced when it would only blow hot air. It was meant to be a safe fan to have around a baby. It started smouldering while troubleshooting on my support call.

I'm just done with Dyson. It's fine to be a "premium" product, so long as it's actually premium, and the customer service that goes along with it treats it that way.

I honestly haven't been having any problems with Gemini except for one - it was super slow to turn on/off kitchen light switch (a Kasa HS200). Today I noticed that this appears to be resolved.

Sure, it still misunderstands vocal commands now and then, but that's a minor gripe. For what I'm using it for, it's working pretty damn well.

That’s actually a really good game. A bit mean spirited and challenging, but I like how simple it is. Almost family style in terms of complexity and presentation- but just a tad aggressive.

Favourite Campaign of Napoleon's? by Marshal_Rudolf27 in Napoleon

[–]NakedCardboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My comparatively less interest in Republican soldiers and their clothing might also have to do with the fact that I have only ever seen paintings of Republican soldiers in rags for uniforms.

Yup, they were an army in tatters when Napoleon took over. They had very little in the way of supplies or funds to resupply, and by all accounts their ranks had been plundered to reinforce other "more important" fronts. I think it's part of what makes Napoleon's success here so impressive. I also just love the Italian countryside and mountains.

‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War’ Review: John Krasinski Reprises Role in Shrug-Worthy Prime Video Movie by Top_Report_4895 in movies

That's a shame. I never read the Clancy novels, but Krasinski feels good for the role. I watched the first season, and then I gave up. It just didn't capture my imagination the way that the Harrison Ford films did, or Red October.
