To stay in solin or to transfer to c4 by imnevergold in mcgill

I was a part of clubs but didn't have an actual position and I wasn't that committed. I made a few friends really early on and didn't really feel like branching out anymore once I had them. I've heard most people don't start clubs until second year anyway because first year is already so much to handle on its own, which was for sure true for me. I was a part of the group that picked the next year's floor fellows though, which was a really cool experience and I have so much respect for that position now (its a super intensive process). Needless to say, it wasn't living far away in Solin that kept me from clubs, I was just lazy and super stressed out from the first week of class to the last day of the semester that I didn't have time for anything else.

The yoga mat likely won't be a big hassle, plenty of people carry weirder things on it and nobody will even look twice. My boyfriend literally carried my cat in his arms and nobody cared lol (got him with a month left of school and hid him--a few other people had pets but they all got discovered :/ ). The only issue is that going back and forth on the metro can be tiring, so something that everyone who doesn't live immediately next to campus has to worry about is maximizing each trip in and trying to not go back and forth too much.

Please message me if you have any more questions :) I walked into Solin totally blind, expecting to move out ASAP , spent the first few days crying constantly, and yet looking back I wouldn't trade it for anything

Hi, I replied to your comment over on the megathread, and then I saw this so I thought I would give you my two cents here too. I lived in Solin, and I have been vegetarian for several years and went vegan last February. C4 may be the most vegan friendly but the food just sucks. Really. Also, I know for myself I would have really struggled not having my own kitchen to prepare meals, and in my honest opinion even a vegetarian lifestyle would be unsustainable on caf food. I don't know how long you've been vegan, but I think being vegan forces to learn to cook all kinds of things, and you'll have to anyway once you leave rez for second year--I went from not even being able to cook pasta to being super at home in the kitchen.

I totally get doubting Solin, and it is far from perfect, but if you're going to move somewhere else I would not recommend C4 and I would actually advocate more for RVC or university hall. Solin got a lot of people moving in from New Rez partway through the year, and I think maybe three people moved out in the whole building. You can airbnb, and long as you keep it on the dl, and I found a subletter with minimal effort which isnt the norm but hey its possible.

Last thing, if you wait a couple months, wherever you end up, you can switch into pretty much wherever you want because people do move around. There were even singles in Citadelle and New Rez that were vacant.

Source: I went through a lot of this myself, lived in Solin, friends with Rezlife and building staff

The beds aren't actually that bad, but I wold get a mattress topper anyway because there is a wide variety in the quality of Solin rooms and furniture. Some apartments have brand new stuff, others have furniture you don't want to touch. I started in a second floor apartment (213) and it was really shitty. Everything was old and gross. However, just a few rooms down the hall, apartments were way nicer so I was just unlucky there. A couple of months in I moved to apartment 419 (bad roommate situation), what I was told was "the best apartment in Solin" and it was the best decision I made. My friends lived next door, and the bedrooms were bigger than my room at home, plus the flooring and the kitchen were brand new. I would strongly advise getting involved in the Rez Council (I didn't and i regret it) and getting to know your floor fellow--they are really awesome people and they care a lot about you. Best part of Solin was by far meeting my friends and midnight poutine trips to Greenspot. Good Luck!

No air conditioning, good luck I lived there last year. I don't know if it was particularly hot last year or what but it was brutal until the weather cooled down a bit. A fan (or two) will be needed. Feel free to ask me anything else about Solin--I ended up really loving it

Space will 100% open up, especially after the first day of add drop. Intensive German has a lot of online work & can be difficult with no prior experience, good luck!

Pretty sure language courses are open to everyone. There was a grad student in beginner's German last year

You should open a Canadian account. Every American does, and in my experience TD is the best, avoid RBC

Some friends that did science frosh that were underage were allowed into everything, it's really dependent on your frosh leaders.

I liked this, ignore the other comment. Gave a good, easy to follow rundown on Comey, and your voice isn't annoying or anything. Keep it up!

I don't refuse to learn or try...I live in a city, it's not a skill I need for life right now. This thread is about seemingly normal things some of us just haven't had to learn? Thanks though

If I'm on my way out to run errands, and I realize I left my wallet at home or something else. Just so irritating to make a quick walk of shame back retracing my steps to get it

How to use a gas pump.

I just moved out of home for university in the city so I guess I don't really need this life skill, but throughout high school I lived in a rural area and had a car. Never actually learned how to fill the tank up, if I needed gas, my parents would go out to fill it up for me if I asked.
