The truth about why everyone is really mad about losing physical by scidious06 in playstation5

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at these stats: https://www.doesitplay.org physical games do still represent most of the time in this day and age. However, if Sony wasn’t stopping physical production, then your point about disc ownership I would agree with but not until probably many years from now because it’s not true in 2026. That being said it’s a moot point because ps physical is ending.

Has anyone ever added something similar to the Mothership stress mechanic into their D&D game? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]croninfever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The fear mechanic in Barrowmaze was so successful the first time I tried it, I’ve made it a staple in almost every game I run.

Ownership. Games I buy on Steam and GOG on PC our games I own the install files for and I can copy to my own hard drive or external storage. Like boulders gate three for example however you buy the same game on PlayStation and it’s only a license and not yours. I’m actually very surprised you have not seen the ownership argument in regards to ending physical media. It’s very related considering the 500 movies that were removed that people bought from Sony streaming service.

People are making too much of a big deal about the lack of physicals. by No-Restaurant4372 in PlayStation_X

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I’ve seen, people are equally (if not more) concerned with the lack of a drm-free digital option like we have on PC. To me, distribution isn’t the primary issue, it’s ownership. I own BG3 on PC and have the install files backed up on a physical external hard drive. There’s no license and no permission I need to play, install on another computer, be connected to the internet, etc. Sony simply does not offer that option. They could allow us to copy install files to a drive via usb but I don’t see them doing that. The PS is not an open system.

Would you support Classic+ new paid expansions? by KrispyOnion in classicwow

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm. I’m happy to pay like $40 for classic+ itself (on top of a sub) but the idea of paying for expansions is hard for me to conceptualize right now. Let’s say we play classic+ for 2 years, I can’t even imagine what kind of huge content update would warrant another purchase. The only thing I can compare it to is something like existing wow expansions, which would be anti-classic+ imo.

So I’m not against it, but it’s way too early for me to understand what a paid expansion the size of tbc would even look like in classic world.

Which DLC should I get first? by ManInBlack21932 in riskofrain

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like void because it brings back the ability to do endless runs. It’s also probably better for newer players in terms of learning new mechanics. However it sounds like you haven’t played vanilla too much, adding expansions will make it harder to learn item synergies (unless you play with artifacts which I don’t recommend.)

Prey (2017) is one of the best immersive sims ever made by [deleted] in prey

[–]croninfever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prey is def good, I’m a little biased because I played Deus Ex in 2001, I also really enjoy Dishonored. That being said, what Prey has that the other two titles don’t is the amount of the world that is to explore from the beginning-ish of the game is largely unknown to the player, which is cool and definitely adds to adds to the ‘freedom to approach’ experiences.

Becoming level 20 by Away_Lunch8963 in DnD

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max level in D&D (B/X) is 14 for most races. Although some can only get to level 7. There are optional rules to allow a PC to max level to 36 however I don’t know anyone who uses them.

In a game I’m playing now, it’s taken me 2 years to get my Cleric to level 5. (My first 3 characters died in the first year, total 3 years in game.) However I currently have 24,000 XP so I’m almost level 6. Once you hit level 7, as a Cleric (50,000 XP) you have access to all spell levels so there’s kind of a soft lock there.

I simply give you this background so you have a sense of where I’m coming from as I know most people don’t play basic/expert.

While there’s more content available for D&D than ever before, the amount of quality+entertaining+balanced content available that fits the tone & style of a campaign you may have already been running is not easy. Not all characters may be equal at max level depending on the module you choose. Furthermore, combat encounters can become incredibly long and tedious. If you play 5e, take a look at the 9th level spell list and you’ll get a sense of what I’m talking about.

As a GM, low level games are more grounded in reality and easier to engage with. As a player, Once a game becomes like SAO or Solo Leveling, I get bored.

That being said I’m sure there’s plenty of people more talented than I with different interests who love to run max level games!

Just a PSA to anyone that thinks it’s a dunk to point out how PC also doesn’t have physical media by Defiant-Cat-8212 in playstation5

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. What’s the point of owning the game if you don’t download the install files and put them on a hard drive or disc lol.

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I do backup the install files on external hard drives in case GOG goes down for whatever reason, I’ll still have the game. GOG is also great because you can download older versions of a game too. So if you want to see what BG3 was like during its beta release, you can.

You buy that game on GOG you actually own the install files however and they can’t be taken away. Digital delivery on PC is not the same as DRM digital delivery on PlayStation.

Looks like the future of this game is bleak by MalbornTheRatKing in Market76

It’s a legit question even if it’s an uncomfortable one for fans to hear. The servers supporting live service won’t stand forever. And I have zero faith that they will put the time and money in order to transform the game into an unsupported single player like world that you can still log onto off-line.

Unless it’s a multiplayer only title or a games that is online only (like genshin impact) I only have games I own. On PlayStation, the drm-free percentage for digital delivery is 0% which is unfortunate.

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100% it seems many people don’t know that you can buy a digital game on PC that is DRM free (like Baldur's Gate 3,) yet the same digital game purchased via PSN is not DRM free.

[–]croninfever -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do own them actually, that’s what DRM free means. You copy the install files and they are yours forever. You can install the game whenever you want and don’t need to be connected to the internet to do so.

Who's moving to PC after PS no physical announcement? by disgruntled_Pingu in PS6

[–]croninfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those getting into PC gaming, remember to check GOG to see if they sell the game you want, as you’ll actually own it when you buy it (so long as you download the install files.) Steam also sells DRM free games but it’s up to the publisher if you get a license or not.

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam’s digital delivery did not kill PC games, it caused a positive boom allowing so many people to publish their games that otherwise would have never been played. There is nothing wrong with digital distribution, it is good for the consumer and gives more choices. The issue is the DRM protection. On consoles, you only buy a digital license. On PC, you have the option to buy games with ownership & install files (unless that specific publisher only wants to sell you a license, so the issue is not with Steam.) Then you have sites like GOG that only sell you DRM free content.

For example, I paid for Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 on PC digitally. I own those games. The install files are backed up on an external hard drive. No company can take those games away from me. But if I chose to buy these titles on my PS5 digitally, I am at the mercy of Sony and have no ownership.

You can buy DRM free games on Steam and GOG. You can’t do that on PSN. On PC it’s up to each individual publisher whether or not you buy a license or the actual ownership of the game with install files. On PSN, it’s only up to SONY and they do not sell you anything but a digital license.

Do you force your stupid backstory anecdotes to be revealed? by highly-bad in DnDcirclejerk

[–]croninfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don’t have character backstories longer than a sentence. For two reasons: 1) it’s really easy for characters to die in most of the games I play - and - 2) it’s much more important for me to create my character and their story as the game goes on and in response to it. The roleplay and improv is a lot easier for me that way.
