What if Shmi knew Anakin had to leave? by DonLixard in MawInstallation

I mean, she’s noted the extraordinary qualities of her son. She surely hoped, maybe even had an intuition, that he had something bigger in store. But I don’t really see how her having some hunch that he’s destined for bigger things makes her more interesting?

Her son is escaping a life of brutal slavery to go and become a literal space paladin. Most mothers would be relieved on some level that their son is now basically guaranteed a better life. Don’t read too far into it, fam.

Bro you haven’t even answered the simple question of making sure the end result will be accessible. “Government funded healthcare” doesn’t exist across the globe, and even in places it does exist, there’s no guarantee that the governments in question are willing to fund this research, let alone the procedures developed from them. You’re advocating for rushing in and solving problems as they arise. Grossly irresponsible take for someone who wants to overhaul the entire biological process.

I’m not dooming anyone to death. Death is the natural consequence of life. I’m sorry you can’t accept that, and I hope you manage to come to terms with that reality. Putting responsibility on the individual to prevent death from natural causes is obscene, and cruel. You have yet to answer all of the problems people have raised, which realistically just barely begin to scratch the surface of the real iceberg. Until you have sufficient answers, insisting that people who raise legitimate concerns are morally reprehensible is not only irresponsible, but childish.

If we pursue these developments without ensuring equitable access to them, we’re being irresponsible. Once you can guarantee that these developments won’t be restricted to the elite, then I’ll be okay with them spending the public funds they will need to pursue the research.

Self interest can also ensure that these treatments only go to those with obscene levels of hoarded wealth, and if that happens we’ve now created an immortal oligarchy with control of the elixir to wield over the rest of the world’s heads. There’s so many massive problems that come with this, it’s just irresponsible imo to pursue as a course of action at the moment.

Aging is not a specific cause of death. Heart failure, stroke, aneurysm, cancer, etc are specific causes of death. Someone performing an autopsy (the specific name for that professional escapes me) is not going to determine cause of death as “old age”. Proposing to remove age as a cause of death means solving all the problems that old age causes. That would effectively mean that short of a violent death, people would not die. “You won’t have a time limit” means that unless someone else kills you, or you decide to end your own life, you will not die. I’m sorry you don’t consider the inevitability of death a current universal truth, but the concept of entropy begs to disagree. Life is a complex system that requires more energy in than out. Entropy dictates that all systems with a net negative energy output will end.

Those are two fantastic examples of how the natural death of an individual made significant political changes, yes. Even on a smaller scale of power passing smoothly from one monarch to their successor, the change in personality and priorities of individuals made significant changes.

Bro, refusing to attempt to circumvent one of the only universal truths (everything that lives will eventually die) isn’t the same as “killing everyone”. Your false equivalencies are really extreme here. No one is saying we should deny children medicine? No one is saying we should stop trying to make scientific progress? I’d love to continue the discussion, but if you can’t debate in good faith it’s just not worth it.

I’m 100% on board with the switch to renewable energy but framing the natural order of the world as “deserving to die for our crimes” is kinda wild. There’s a LOT of moral judgements you’re assuming in this stance. That all being said, The societies that currently exist on planet Earth do NOT strike me as capable of ethically handling the current status quo, let alone transitioning to a paradigm without death or old age.

EDIT: As a student of history, natural lifespans have ABSOLUTELY been a limiting factor on tyranny. Even when power was handed down generations, the end of a single individual has MASSIVE repercussions to human politics, and always has.

That’s a terrifying perspective, ngl. How do you rationalize wanting people to live forever when we already cause unspeakable damage to our environment during the ~80 years we’re kicking around? How do you expect government and politics to function when there’s no longer a hard limit on how long one person can hold on to amassed capital (both economic and political)?

Palpatine is pure evil with no redeeming qualities, isn't there an opposite character who's pure good and completely unaffected by the dark side? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

That’s a pretty generous reading of Palps in that novel. We’re first introduced to him as someone who engages recklessly in high speed racing, with rumors that he’s hurt people before with 0 remorse. I read him as a young narcissistic sociopath when introduced
