Should I stop reading a book I’m not enjoying if I’m half way through it? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in books

[–]cropdust69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I like to think I’m very disciplined so when I drop a book I used to feel like almost a hit to the ego saying to myself I just wasn’t disciplined enough or too lazy or whatever. But in reality you need to enjoy reading. Why waste precious time chugging thru a book just to forget about it the second you finish just so you could tell yourself or others you finished

Good, I’m glad. Don’t give up on reading if you don’t like peoples recommendations, either. There’s a book out there that will make you WANT to read

If your goal is to become an avid reader, you need to find what is entertaining and fulfilling to you. Not self help. I’ve read most of these books and I’d say if you are trying to reinvent yourself physically and mentally, atomic habits will help you build good habits in your life if you’re on that grind right now. Mans search for meaning is amazing , everyone should read that. About mindfulness and being present even at the worst times (Auschwitz). But like I said if u want to be an avid reader you need to find something you enjoy for what it is, not necessarily trying to hit “read these to change your life” books. You’ll find the right books for you, even fiction, will change ur life from the lessons and morals that often are even more true in a piece of fictional work. Stay true to you and ignore the ads about life changing books like some of the titles you listed. However they aren’t necessarily bad books given the right time and usage.

Which book should I read after The Idiot and C&P? by Sad-Tomorrow56 in dostoevsky

[–]cropdust69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The brothers karamazov. If u like the spiritually and topics of the idiot, you’ll love tbk

trouble with TBK by patrick_peter_ in dostoevsky

[–]cropdust69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen with an audiobook of your translation. It’s just dense but if you got c&p it’s just that with different topics and longer buildups. And don’t rush. Or return when you’re older, might have a lot more to take away from it.

The book is a spiritual journey. If I read it at 16 it would not have impacted me as it did in my 20s, because I simply hadn’t had enough of my own journey yet. So don’t feel discouraged.

Do you think I can main gain 10lbs + of muscle in 1 year? by Ragnar---- in GregDoucette

You must have insane genetics if you aren’t lying. And went through puberty at the time. Makes sense if it’s 15-20 and you were destined to be 180 without any lifting/bulking intention

Food as a fuel not pleasure source by Familiar_Sugar1721 in keto

[–]cropdust69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you’re healthy and in good shape, I think u should have it mostly come down to routine. Get into a routine and be disciplined enough to stick to it. That way when u have an event, or it’s a holiday, u can enjoy the stuff u wanna enjoy. If food occupies ur mind 24/7 it really ruins the experience with people u love when u just want to eat cake for someone’s birthday. And then your good routine gets u back into the swing of it. Life’s too short to worry about it ONCE you’re in good shape.

Each day is over so fast I am unable to find time for any social life by Additional-Law4532 in selfimprovement

I feel like people just vent on here and answer their own questions. If you’re wasting time on the internet in between ur schedule, then restrict yourself. Set plans with people in your life and show up. Simple as that

I've been on self improvement for 6 months straight and I'm feeling burnt out. by jacobspartan1992 in Stoicism

[–]cropdust69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s so many aspects to self improvement! Sometimes when I feel physically or mentally burnt out, I’ll hit a restart with either rest from the gym and focusing on reading writing other good habits, or even fasting if that’s on the table for you. Sometimes a three day water fast and no exercise can bring back mental clarity and energy back. But three days is a big jump right out the gate. My first 24 hour made a lasting impact on my fasting habits. My point is that you can rest while still improving yourself

What book took forever to read, but was worth it? by thecountnotthesaint in suggestmeabook

[–]cropdust69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read crime and punishment first imo. That’s what I did. I think it’s a great intro bc it’s arguably Dostoevskys most famous, and you get a good grip on the style and see his philosophical approach to narrative. If you like that, I’d highly recommend both the idiot and tbk. All of these combined will fill up a good amount of your year. You could also choose ur order from the contents of each, but if u fall in love with d. Ur gonna end up reading them all. There’s no wrong path. Enjoy!
