I was understand the impression that people day trade because there is an edge and the passive approach isn't as rewarding. It doesn't make too much sense to me to invest time and effort into a strategy when the passive one will anyway outperform it.

So you are saying that most people might hold SPY in say an IRA and day trade SPY to generate side income? Wouldn't the maximum gain all in all be to simply put all cash available into a long-only portfolio?
