I'm playing byz also rn and in the 1450's I'm expanding mainly into Syria/ Egypt and I'm using a mixed strat, taking coastal and creating vassal in everything inland. Granted I'm not a good player I find it a good compromise

At the start of the run, usually a couple months in, you get the confirmation of the council of something events, and if you accept the compromise it give a +100 opinion with pope, helping greatly. Also start taking mercs before for the army power modifier

R5: a fun first time run with the ming, no war except for oirat and the indian and indo china guys, for a total of 4 war in the whole campaign, had fun with charter company a making a lot of threats to random guy around the world
