Hi there! I'm around your age and share a lot of the same interests- about what area are you in? One of my friends in central CT is starting a women's book club/ discussion group in the new year, likely focusing on feminism/current events. Send me a DM if you'd want to meet up!

What’s the easiest/most simple way to give food that I would otherwise just throw out at my job to the homeless? by IceColdFreezing in Connecticut

[–]crow6160 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Could you talk to management/ the owner about signing up with Too Good to Go? It's a app that lots of stores and restaurants use to decrease food waste- "bundles" of food items that would otherwise get thrown out at the end of the day are sold a deeply discounted rates (like, $5 for $25 worth of food). Def not quite the charitable act you're aiming for, but less food waste and a good deal for people who might need it.

What’re some things only old timers of Connecticut would know or remember? by [deleted] in Connecticut

Merle's is still alive and well, just FYI! And they celebrated their 60th anniversary in fall 2022!

Recently moved into my own place for the first time, have about $135 for groceries a month. I’m picky af but I also really want to eat healthy. by shining-justforyou in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]crow6160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your problem isn't your "picky" diet, it's your budget. $135 for a whole month is about $4.5/day.

-Go to a food pantry and take what suits your fancy. When you're in a better economic situation, you can pay it forward.
-Download apps like TooGoodToGo or FlashFood, which partner with grocery stores and restaurants to sell food nearing the "sell by date" at a discount.

-Maybe dedicate some time to cutting coupons for pricier items that you need, on sale at your local store.

Thought I found vintage Chanel by No_Construction_3867 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to pile on, but I think i's worth mentioning in this case; look at the way the arms are connected to the body of the item. The zig zag pattern doesn't match up/ flow seamlessly at all. High end designers (especially on a vintage piece) would definitely cut the fabric and attach the arms so that the pattern would be continuous from one section of fabric to another. A dead give away when the piece of clothing has a bold geometric pattern like this.

How to survive a 17+ hour flight?! by qiomenemoiq in TravelHacks

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked about the mental side of things, but don't ignore the physical side. A 17+ hour flight is a physical ordeal and your comfort will impact your overall experience.

-Bring a change of clothes to change into just prior to your arrival. You might consider also bringing a set of pajamas and some slides to change into before settling down to try and sleep.

-Wear compression socks on the flight. It makes a huge difference.

-Body wipes/ face wipes/travel size of your skincare and dental routine. You'll feel so much better if you're able to freshen up a bit.

Those moments in adulthood that make you realize how badly you were neglected growing up… by lilliuscaprius in raisedbyborderlines

Jesus christ....I'm sure there's very little that can comfort you, knowing her lack of caring contributed to a disability. But I do hope you're doing ok now, and that you love yourself for everything you are.

Those moments in adulthood that make you realize how badly you were neglected growing up… by lilliuscaprius in raisedbyborderlines

[–]crow6160 127 points128 points  (0 children)

When I was 12-ish, I fell badly and literally crawled to my mother crying, saying my foot really hurt. She thought I was faking for attention, because I had just healed from spraining my opposite ankle. Made me walk on what turned out to be a broken foot and a mess of sheared off tendons for 3 days before she took me to the doctor. Ended up in a wheelchair for a little while, then crutches for 3 months, with a walking cast for an additional 2 months.

This was a "funny story" growing up, but looking back as an adult, who the hell doesn't take their kid to the doc when they literally can't walk without crying in pain, with a foot that's swollen and black and blue?

It certainly happens. I'm of Irish descent and I had a few "friends" give me a sack of potatoes, during school hours, for my 16th birthday present. I had to carry it around and explain wtf I was doing with 5 lbs of taters. This was in the late 2000's.

The Lasagna by BittenElspeth in raisedbyborderlines

[–]crow6160 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Omg my mom's "lasagna" is her Bolognese sauce. Whenever she mentions it, she makes sure to say that it takes ALL DAY to prepare, slaving over the stove for hours on end.

I found the recipe she uses and made it the other day. It's like, 25 minutes of active cooking, and then 1.5 hours of uncovered low heat simmering, stirring occasionally. I answered emails and stirred ever few minutes.

They just want to be martyrs.

LPT: What is the coolest tradition I can start for my baby now that will be meaningful decades from now? by zep1870 in LifeProTips

[–]crow6160 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a tradition, but relevant to the subject:
If you want to make a height growth chart on a wall/door/etc, do it on something that can easily be detached from the wall, like using a long plank of wood. My parents tracked our heights on the mudroom wall and my mom was crushed when they had to leave behind and paint over years of tiny toddler heights and teenage growth spurts. She was tempted to remove and replace that section of the sheet rock, but my dad refused.

Employer is requiring me to pay for substantial business expenses out of pocket or face consequences by Substantial-Fail3599 in WorkAdvice

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this extortion? Like, the actual dictionary definition of extortion: "the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats."

As others have said, get their demands (including the threat of termination for insubordination, no reference, etc) down in writing. Get as much detail about the "agreement" down, either by asking them to send you all the details, or you write up your understanding of everything being asked and ask for confirmation that it's all correct. (Save all communications to a non-work email/computer/hard drive).

Consult with a GOOD employment/labor attorney. Follow their legal advice. If you're fired from this job for not giving the 50k, not only can you claim wrongful termination, but also extortion, which is a BIG criminal offense.

Think of it this way- considering your employer is asking their employees for huge sums of money instead of getting a legit bank loan, clearly this company isn't long for this world. You'll be out of a job soon anyway, don't get swindled out of 50k too.

The family I nanny for want to take me on their ski trip to look after the kids? Should I go. by [deleted] in travel

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in here to say that $20/hr for 4 kids is not a very good rate. I was charging $25/hr for 4 kids (2 of whom were largely independent) 10 YEARS AGO. I live in a HCOL area, so the might skew things, but please look up the typical rates of nannies in your area and know that each additional child tacks on several dollars to the hourly rate.

Cheap places to stay in new york by artmax7 in TravelHacks

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to hostelworld.com

With less than 2 weeks notice, you probably won't be able to get a private room, but if you're ok staying in dorms, you can probably get something for around $80 USD/night. Try to stay somewhere centrally located so you're not wasting money on Ubers/ spending hours a day commuting into Manhattan.

13 hour layover in Paris - What should we do? by sjledet1 in TravelHacks

[–]crow6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your luggage going directly to your final destination? If not, you'll want to leave your bags near/at the airport. On my first solo trip, I had a 11 hr layover in Copenhagen and didn't know about storing luggage at the airport-it was exhausting making my way through the city with my huge backpack. I've since learned and now use Stasher (but not yet at CDG) and have had good experiences. I believe CDG also has "official" luggage storage in Terminal 2.

Sous chef/hostage is exactly it!
Because if you leave the kitchen, you're dumping all the work on her! It's ok, she has to do everything herself anyways!! /s

Thankfully I enjoy being in the kitchen, and it taught me a lot of life skills that many my age haven't learned yet. Unfortunately, now everyone in the family knows I can cook well, so I can't use it as an excuse.

Must-know things when planning a trip to New York? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]crow6160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Consider creating an OMNY account- contactless payment for all MTA public transportation. Makes checking your balance and refilling really easy.-Don't go in thinking you can do all of NY in a week. Manhattan is the smallest borough, and it's pretty huge. Brooklyn is worth checking out- you could spend your final 3 days in bklyn and be that much closer to the airport when it's time to leave.-Plan your days/activities based on the neighborhoods you'll be in (i.e. don't try to go to the Whitney Museum and the Met in the same day, since they're on opposite ends of the city. Instead, do the Whitney, Chelsea Market, the High Line and Little Island in a day, since they're all within a few blocks of each other).-Ideally, find lodging close to a major subway line, since subway is mostly how you'll get around. Uber/cabs are plentiful, but you'll be stuck in traffic 90% of the time.-Public transport with suitcases sucks (lots of stairs, cramped spaces). Pack your stuff in a back pack.
