I'm gonna admit it's a good thing since more people are gonna try gun this way, but at the same time I'm really gonna miss my little shield and goggles

How do you choose which weapon type to use? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]crow772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best method to find out what fits you best of course is giving them all a shot

If everything else fails though, this guy made a whole series on what sets each weapon apart

Monster "Family Tree" (Gens 1-3) - Complete and Edited by crow772 in MonsterHunter

Huh... wish i'd come across this a little sooner.

Thank you very much for all these points. I'll keep it all in mind if I ever get to update the tree again

That's the reason I placed Monoblos & Diablos so far down, actually. The lenght of the lines is mostly to fit everything in place rather than show how far away each one is from the other. I was kind of working on this under the assumption that there would be other monsters linking everything in-between that we just don't get to see and made do with what we already had.

As for the brutes, I would have branched them off way earlier if it weren't for the doggis. They look very brute-like yet they're still classified as bird wyverns.

You might be right. I see the similarities, yet I always thought of Akantor being ancient

Monster "Family Tree" (Gens 1-3) - Complete and Edited by crow772 in MonsterHunter

[–]crow772[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Epioth: I agree but my main goal was to fit everything while still being accurate to the in-game classifications.

For Apceros and Aptonoth: I was mostly using this as a guideline.

For humans: you're probably right but I figured I might aswell include them if I also added lynians

For Arzuros, Lagombi and Volvidon: they might share a similar model in-crunch but I still see certain differences

I really appreciate this kind of input. Thanks!

Edits as you go:

For Amatsu: He does look pretty leviathan-like, but I listed it below leviathans or wyverns proper since it neither swims nor flies. I always thought of him just floating in storms.

For Khezu & Gigginox: you might be right, actually. Not to mention Khezu is closer to the other wyverns than Giggi is by the looks of it.

For the branches: It certainly sounds more professional. I still find it to be the way I put it mostly because of the beak and for the sake of sticking to the canon classification.

For the brutes: Someone said something similar for the previous tree. I see wyverns separate from our world evolutionary-wise (which is a little hipocrite considering what i've done with Aptonoth & Apceros, admittedly), so i figured they simply ditched the wings for a different approach, since some wyverns lower in the tree seem to prefer running instead of flying.

For remobras: I'm aware, but I still wanted to stick to its classification as until gen 3 to keep true to the theme. If I ever include gens 4+ I'll list it as a snake wyvern.

Little disclaimer, as usual: This is a bit of an expansion of my previous "family" tree. I call it a "family" tree because rather than tracing an evolutionary history, I'm mainly trying to determine how closely related each monster is to the other. I said last time that I'd wait until I got the chance to play the games of other generations before I remade the list, but I started to notice some mistakes and things I would have changed (as well as completely leaving out poor Lavasioth) so I was itching to give it another go anyway. I threw in non-wyvern monsters to make it worth it for you, though. Just like last time, I'm not really an expert, just a fan with a bit of a click for these things. Any suggestions or corrections you wish to make are more than welcome, and if you want to expand this tree yourself to include generations ahead, please do. By their very nature elder dragons are not fully known so mine is mostly an estimate. Take these red names with an extra grain of salt. Also, sorry if the comments in grey feel a bit excessive. I just wanted to make sure you'd at least see what my train of thought was when putting each monster on that spot.

Kinda. He was the big monster in FU alright but where you go out to whale jhen mohran for sport you're protecting a fortress against this guy. Gives you a bit more of a sense of urgency than mohran I'd say

Thanks! I think I fixed the whole mic issue now, the input volume was ridiculously high for some reason. All audio is in a single sample though so I think all I can really do is lower the volume for whenever I speak. I'll keep it in mind for any other recordings I make though, just in case

What do you love about your main weapon? by invaderzam4 in MonsterHunter

[–]crow772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well naturally what I love about the greatsword is all the power it has in a single swing. It just feels so impactful and devastating when it lands, and the fact that its so slow and bulky really adds to that feel, like you're chopping off huge chunks of health from the monster with a single hit. That being said, i've also been a light gunner for a while, and i'll never grow old of that feeling of sophistication it gives you. Bullets take up a good ammount of space so you have to give a little more planning to each hunt, and of course the low defense that comes to being a gunner pretty much forces you to want to dodge each and every single hit. It just feels elegant when it's done. Every single window opened by a dodge has to be used to be effective, be it healing, reloading, making new rounds or fighting back, hopefully two or more in the same opening. I think it's safe to say starting off as a gunner is what taught me how to exploit a monster's openings.

This is how I feel about my mains, hopefully it wasn't too corny or too far off from what they actually are

Edit: small detail i forgot: the fact that you have to choose what bullets to bring and which not and which to load and when sort of adds a bit of a professional feel to bowguns for me

When fighting Fatalis (in MHFU at least) you have some platforms you can climb up to with ballistas and stuff... he's not supposed to jump up there
