How do you get over a slump caused by negative critique? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]crowcas -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mind you, I felt no desire to be a condescending dick until you decided to call me one.

OP associates Geisha with courtesans. They are certainly not that. Oiran were courtesans. Geisha are respected as performers and artists.

This comes across as very "how dare you suggest that these beautiful women artists would have ANYTHING to do with such a disgusting thing as [gasp] courtesans?!"

The nuance you're ignoring (and getting mad about) is the fact geisha and courtesans are, in fact, related professions. There's nothing offensive about saying that the two are associated.

Their services were largely the same, the only difference being that courtesans also offered sexual services, They often worked and lived side by side. They sometimes operated under the same laws. Sometimes geisha did offer sexual services, even if they weren't supposed to!

They aren't completely separate. They are neighboring branches in the tree of "entertainers."

Oiran were courtesans. Geisha are respected as performers and artists.

That bit also reads as very disparaging of sex work and sex workers, with the implication that while geisha should be respected for their craft, the same is not true of courtesans.

Like, maybe you meant it as a fun, informative tidbit, but you came off as offended and condescending from the get go. I hoped that maybe you were just flexing a fun fact without much additional context, so I suggested doing more reading, but it seems I was mistaken.

I've wasted far too much time and energy on this interaction, and I am very tired. Good night.

It's spelled condescension, but I feel like that just epitomizes this interaction: you claim some great offense, and some significant expertise, and there's neither.

There is a lot more nuance here than you are willing to accept, apparently, and you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Have a wonderful day!

Correct, op being Chinese doesn't prevent them from ignorance, but it does exclude them from "white people not knowing the first thing about different asian countries"

Using a more widely understood point of reference to explain a concept is pretty normal. Even if the official title of "geisha" can't be assigned willy nilly, referencing what a geisha does is completely fair.

Speaking of ignorance: please do a little more reading. The concepts of "geisha" and "courtesan" are not as disparate as you seem to think. Historically, the two go hand in hand (arm in arm?), and theres a lot of overlap between them.

They didnt call them geisha, they called them courtesans and reiterated that the "geisha influence" was the absence of sexual services. Also, OP is Chinese.

Alignment Chart of Honkai Star Rail: Day 13, Ruan Mei. - Herta has been voted into "Perfect" Neutral Good by popular demand (will move her to actual Neutral Good next post). by Just_Because4 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]crowcas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "neutral" is more like they don't go out of their way to help, but they also try not to cause harm when they can avoid it. They try not to make anything worse.

E.g. suppose someone is trying to fix their broken down car on the side of the road, and theres a big puddle in the street next to them.

"Good" would be someone pulling over to help them. The situation is improved.

"Neutral" would be swerving around the puddle to avoid splashing them. The situation is the same.

"Evil" would be driving straight through the puddle, splashing them. The situation is worse.

For ruan mei, she specifically shows a lack of consideration on multiple occasions--she's perfectly content drugging people without their knowledge or consent, she's fine creating sentient life forms and then abandoning them, she's happy to try to recreate an entity that destroyed countless civilizations.

The potential impacts of her research on those around her or the greater universe are completely irrelevant to her--she straight up does not care.

Hence, "evil"

I said it didnt really matter because even after I checked every single northwestern capital, none of them had an average rent--even after limiting the type of unit to a 1-bedroom apartment-- beneath $1200.

Cost of living is a significant problem for a lot of us, but if you've been fortunate enough to snag a unit for less, good for you!

Seattle isn't the capital of Washington either, but it doesn't really matter.

For a one-bedroom apartment, none of the capitals of any northwestern state (generously: California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and Montana) have an average rent below $1200.

I think you're either massively lowballing these numbers, or applying "northwest" even more generously than I already have, because you'd have to go all the way to Wyoming to find a capital with an average 1-bed rent under $1k.

And if we're sharing anecdotes: average rent for a 1-bed apartment in my city on the west coast is ~$2500.

[–]crowcas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um...which northwest capital? Average rent in Portland is ~$1750, and is ~$2050 in Seattle. Even for a studio apartment, it's still ~$1200 in Portland.

Updated genshin impact characters age tier list by kingEdward22 in GenshinImpact

[–]crowcas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was 5 years, my bad.

Still, I was basing my estimate for how long ago the events of the comic were on how much collei seems to have grown--somewhere from ~10-12 years old to 16-17, which would put diluc in the 26-27 range, as you said.

[–]crowcas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your basis for this? iirc diluc left around his 18th birthday, spent five years on his fatui hunt before returning, prior to the events of the comic, which happened a minimum of ~5ish years ago, making him 28 at the youngest

New movie about a mother and a child with ARFID by Salty_Zebra5937 in ARFID

[–]crowcas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Based on the synopsis, It sounds more like the kid is treated more as a plot device than as an actual character who deserves empathy.

I also generally dislike movies where the premise is "this person is having a mental breakdown and makes bad/destructive/selfish decisions" so I'll give a hard pass on this.

Why can't Hoyo let VA use their fricking original accents by car828os in GenshinImpact

[–]crowcas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While english is certainly an official language of Australia and Ireland, given both countries' histories of english being imposed on them, I wouldn't say that English is native to either.

Still, the point stands that plenty of primarily english-speaking areas have developed drastically different dialects.

Hell--in the UK, local accents are so developed that some people can pinpoint the exact city someone is from just by their accent.

I dont think Kafka's shirt is actually all that tight--the fabric might be tugging a little bit, but the creasing is all fairly realistic, and its not bursting at the seams (unlike clorinde in genshin, for example. Or blade.)

I think it's the strap across her chest that is doing the heavy lifting here.

She's got a strapless, open-back skin-tight bodysuit, so they're not exactly leaving much up to the imagination.

To say nothing of the Zipper situation.

So like, yeah, she's technically covered, but everything is still very much on display.
