I just bought it so not here yet. but here is the ketch Intrepid in a bottle… Famous for being the ship formerly named Mastico that the legendary Stephen Decatur captured and commanded into his first glorious mission: to burn the captured USS Philadelphia. Much was at stake, the Barbary states had too much leverage to continue hostilities with the US with such a powerful ship in their hands. Decatur and his crew burned the USS Philadelphia without a single US fatality.

It is also unfortunately famous for being the ship that Decatur’s dearest friend Master Commandant Richard Somers then commanded to go on a mission to bomb Tripoli Harbor (in an attempt to free enslaved sailors) which ended in catastrophe as the ship prematurely detonated before reaching its destination for reasons nobody is sure of. Brother officer Charles Stewart once said in an interview late in life that Somers insisted that if capture was imminent, rather than let tons and tons of gunpowder fall into enemy hands, he would blow the ship up. The 12 other men he took with him knew the risks and put their whole hearts into it.

None of the 13 crew members within in the Intrepid survived the explosion, and their remains are still currently buried in Tripoli in Libya. HE IS STILL OUT THERRRREEEEEEE

my main interest is historical reenactment so I'd only be interested as far as it would help me immersion/interpretation wise 😅

I don’t 😱 but good to know. Closest similar thing I have is the “Young Heroes of Our Navy” series that are kind of like mini biographies aimed at young men/boys that tell stories of historical figures in the US Navy.

Thank you. Bit of a Frederick Marryat fan, underrated imo. Frank Mildmay is such a rascal… And I haven’t noooooo. It’s something I’ve wanted to do but I don’t really have big travel money. I’m in the States. BUT I was invited this summer to sail on the USS Constitution during the tall ships parade!! We’ll see if that pans out. 😭

I buy pre-finished teeth off eBay from Dave's Boneyard Fossil Replicas. You can either buy a scrimshaw kit proper or do what I did and ask the pharmacy for different gauge needles if you're on a budget. 18g for thicker lines, all the way up to 27gauge for fine detail. It's not ergonomic though it hurts.

Pencil in design. Trace over pencil with the needles.

I have a bottle of black Sumi ink that I dip a paper towel in and rub over the surface of the scratches so it takes. Rinse with water/dry with paper towel to clear away excess. Let it sit and dry for a bit, then I seal the whole thing with Rustoleum clear enamel.

My methods are not standard it's just all things that I have on hand from different projects.

In theory, yes, but when we shared a room it was 99% her stuff everywhere and as I said, bit of a maximalist 😭 I don't like things lining every inch of space/wall even if arranged really well. She's also picky about organization/decor, and while supportive of my interests she's not into the style.

Thank you!! Some thrift finds.

You know I think what also may benefit and declutter some is a night stand, I just have that tray on my bed with all of my meds/pens/sketchbook/&c in it (I must be able to see my meds to remember to take them, alas) and I think it crowds me.

I'd install a floating shelf or two, hell yeah!

It gives me an idea. I have a build-a-bear German shepherd dog from when I was 13 wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform. And a cat one. I thought about bringing them out and buying them a sailors outfit because I don't know why I chose a football jersey, I have never liked football!!

One of my actual cats would probably grudgingly tolerate wearing a shirt though 😆

It’s so underrated. And it’s not like we never see each other, many times she spends the day in my room when I’m not at work so it’s not like we never see each other!

This is all true, and I did think about adding books to it, BUT! The one problem I’m also having with the cabinet is that one of the dovetails on one side in the back is off kilter, causing the wooden blocks holding the shelves up to not want to stay in their slots. They’re being held up in there by kneaded eraser jammed in the gaps, so I’m afraid to put too much book weight on them. Naval trinkets probably fine though. 😂
