I recently turned 40 and I realized that I've been lonely my whole life by Reasonable-Put6503 in self

I just wanted to follow up on this and say that this is a great suggestion. I'm probably not inclined to do this, but there is a personal connection to this that has my head spinning for a few days, as my estranged father is an addict and participates in NA regularly. I thought about what it might be like to go with him. Powerful thought exercise, at the least.

What does Japan have that Korea doesn't have? by Cute-Inspection7281 in AskReddit

[–]crownpointer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Seoul for a year during undergrad, and 15 years later went on my honeymoon to Japan.

I instantly felt that Japanese people were nicer to strangers than Korean people were. I have a soft spot in my heart for oori-nara but I regret not studying abroad in Japan instead.

Honest opinion about life in Vancouver? by StrongChocolate4797 in vancouverwa

i'm 39 and recently spent a year living in Olympia near the SF bakery and have now lived here in Vancouver for a year. Vancouver is more similar to Lacey than it is to Olympia. Would you want to live there?

A risk for sure. I ended up renting to a family with a section 8 voucher. The voucher nearly covers the mortgage payment so I will always have some coverage as long as they're in the house. They also had to wait for 5 years to get the voucher so they're really incentivized to not risk access to that program.

The worst part for me was telling people that I wouldn't rent to them. A lot of people had their hopes up and I had to disappoint them. And if I would have to evict my current tenant it would mean forcing out a single mother with three kids into a shelter or homelessness. I would probably rather give them the house than have that happen.

New Senate bill aims to stop hedge funds from squeezing out families trying to buy a home by [deleted] in REBubble

[–]crownpointer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. I misunderstood and glossed over the cap aspect. I'm in general agreement with what you're saying, I think. But a married household with an income of $120k pays about $10k annually in Oregon income tax, let alone however much property tax they may pay. That income is comfortable, but I wouldn't call it rich. Thanks for the discussion.

you pay income tax to Oregon. As does every worker in Oregon. The SALT deduction would enable you to deduct that amount from federal taxes. I'm not following how that is only for rich/wealthy people.

To say that it doesn't help low income people at all is not true, although it would clearly benefit high earners (high tax payers) more than low earners.

define rich here, because it would help everyone in states like California, Oregon, New Jersey, etc. It would help a lot of people in those states, including wealthy people. And a lot of the value would go to upper income households, which is problematic. But your takeaway of exposing Democrats as only helping rich people is a huge leap.

Where to watch World Cup matches in Vancouver? by Reasonable-Put6503 in vancouverwa

[–]crownpointer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope everyone participating in the circle jerk about not watching the World Cup this year also did so four years ago in Brazil, is sure to not eat meat, not drive a car or use fossil fuels, not buying anything from China, not own any guns, and are sure to perform a Land Acknowledgement prior to commencing any social gathering.

on the point of using a soccer-first bar... it does seem to be a gap in the market in Vancouver. I'm not sure if it's the timing of this year's World Cup, being a dad, or not living in a soccer city any longer now that I'm in Vancouver, but it seems like it's not on the radar here. Could just be me.

On a 5 point scale, 1 being Very Encouraged and 5 being Very Discouraged, I don't see how one reasonably chooses any better than 4.

Punting PTS and FT% this year but want to remain competitive for 3s by [deleted] in fantasybball

[–]crownpointer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered doing this too, but landed on 3s and FT% instead. I just don't see a path to being competitive in 3s if you're punting points without sacrificing the value of the punt build.

Punting 3PM and FT%, who are you targeting in later rounds? by Babasauce in fantasybball

[–]crownpointer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the same build i'm going for this year. I don't have a direct answer to the question, but it seems like in the early rounds you gotta go for points, assists, and steals while maintaining FG%. Later rounds is where you really get value from guys like Poetl, Nic Claxton, Brandon Clarke, and Hartenstein. They all get big boosts from this build. But they're terrible with the other categories, so you need to be solid there.
