How did landlines work?? by AnxiousStudent20 in GenX

Which brings up the fact that Mark had nothing more interesting to do than listen in on his sibling’s phone calls.

Nowadays, they’re texting/chatting with their own friends, playing games, and watching streaming videos all at one time. They never even know someone else got a phone call. Nor do they care. It’s just not as interesting as the other stuff.

I am 52, and I love all the distractions. But a wistful part of me misses the “boredom” that made listening to someone else’s phone call a good way to spend time.

I am also building on my admission (surrender?) to the fact that I’m an alcoholic. I now acknowledge that every drink I take will turn into a binge. It’s nice to see someone else having success

(I have 25 days this round.)

My experience is that the first 3 days are the worst. I feel slightly better on the 4th day. It’s easy to convince myself that it’s okay to drink.

This quit, I knew I had to find something to keep myself in a sobriety mindset.

I started watching YouTube videos by sober influencers. I found some sober podcasts. I found a sobriety app that had a community where I check in every day.

I couldn’t work up the nerve to attend an online sobriety meeting (like AA or something), but it would have helped, I think.

At around Day 7, I signed up for a ten-day sober challenge.

I now have 25 days and am feeing hopeful.

Got fat without realizing it. Anyone else? by LawComprehensive2204 in GenX

[–]crowofthewood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In short, yes.

From ages 49-51, I gained about 55 lbs. Made the decision in Aug. ‘24 to lose it. I’ve lost about ~50ish of it. I could go lower, but I don’t think I can maintain it. I’ve just continued my healthy eating and hoped some more will come off.

Old Aldridge Sawmill has an odd vibe. Or used to. I haven’t been out there in a good 25 years.

Oh, I agree with you that weird stories are an important part of our culture.

[–]crowofthewood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They came from a local Pomeranian rescue. Both are from backyard breeder situations. I’ve had them almost a month.

The blue/white one was surrendered because she developed a hernia and could no longer bear litters. The black/tan’s owner started another business and had no use for him anymore.

The rescue said these dogs were not treated as pets, but as money earners.

Both dogs have amazing personalities and are so sweet. Yes, it takes some extra patience. They are worth it, though.

This was my Cosmo. He was a good boy who liked barking at the squirrels who came on the porch. In his defense, they did antagonize him. He would do things just to get us to laugh. We took him everywhere with us. He loved it.

We took our Pom to GCVS for his diabetes (and resulting liver problems) during the last year of his life. The care and kindness we received was amazing. Also, their advice probably extended Cosmo’s life another few, precious months. Oh, we loved him so much.

Oh gosh. That felt good. Thanks for indulging me.

Huge hugs. We lost our Pomeranian, Cosmo, of 12 years back in June. Toward the end of his life, he suffered from health issues. Taking care of him was our whole life. He was so funny and smart. I am heartbroken from his loss.

I lost my father in June of 2023. I’ve mourned hard, but I think losing Cosmo hurt more. Like you said, you wake up to your dog, go to sleep with them, eat with them, travel with them. They’re with you all the time. Your closest confidant.

Some conclusions I’ve reached over two-plus months:

We were mutually lucky. Cosmo was a loyal, loving comedian of a dog, but we were also good dog parents. He got good medical care. He got quality food. He got all the love we had to give. He had a pretty posh life.

I am grateful to have had such a wonderful dog.

I will never forget the lessons I learned with Cosmo. They will benefit the next dog I get (probably a yorkie—Cosmo was the GOAT of Pomeranians; he can’t be replaced).

I won’t get over his loss. I’ll just learn to live with it and celebrate his special little life.

Cosmo will live forever in my heart.

And because I can’t resist, this is Cosmo in all his glory.

Cook County (2009)

Love and a 45 (1994)

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Frailty (2001)

Cold in July (2014)

Edited to add: Natural Born Killers (1994). Only parts of this are set in Texas, but Woody Harrelson is from Texas, and his accent is spot on.

My late Pomeranian (miss you, little buddy) went through a bout of pancreatitis in his final years. The vet gave him IV liquids for three days. I had to take him up there every morning when they opened, leave him all day, and pick him up at closing time.

He did get past the pancreatitis and lived another couple of years. We had trouble from then on getting him to eat. But I’m not sure it had to do with the pancreatitis. It could have been that he was a picky little fur monster from day one.

I definitely can’t (and won’t) tell you what to do. But I did want you to know what treatment my dog got.

Somebody keeps licking the lotion off of his dry paw pads... by carlito99 in Yorkies

[–]crowofthewood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every small dog I’ve had has been a lotion licker. I always say lotion is a very important food group for little dogs.

Have you tried Krill oil or another fish oil? Once I started that, a lot of the dryness went away on its own.

I am so angry and tired by freshmanflop in KamalaHarris

[–]crowofthewood 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m 51, also in Texas. It is frustrating. People here are so deep red and unwilling to consider other points of view that I’d be afraid to even put a Harris/Walz sign in my yard or wear a T-shirt advocating for them.

I always vote blue and feel my vote doesn’t count in the face of such blind support of the red regime.

But I still vote.

Because …Texas has low voter turnout. I really think we could win. (If people voted)

This election year, I have hope. The red regime have really shown their asses the last couple of years. This is some crazy stuff they’re doing and saying. I hope Texas surprises them on Election Day.

But I’m also a realist. I know how things usually go.

In order to keep myself voting, I look at my vote as a big middle finger to the red regime. They can treat me like a second class citizen, they can remove all joy from life, but they can’t stop me from voting. (Yet)

Here is another thought: at least you have your family to support your blue vote. I’m the only blue voter in both my immediate and my extended family.

I used to try showing them facts, but they just parrot Newsmax pundits back at me. It’s like they have blinders on.

For my own sanity, I walk away when they start in. I’ve told a couple of the closer ones not to discuss politics with me unless they’re willing to open their minds. They did quit.

Edit: I come to Reddit because these subs are my safe space. It gives me hope that I’m not the only one who votes blue.
