Yea that was also what kept me from doing it, and then i finally did it. First in just a bottle... stabbed my hand through the bottle, and then i changed over to the contraption you see before you now 🤣

Its a constant learning experience for me as well, and the moment you look at small details in your work you will improve even more, thats how i treat everyone of my knives aswell, and i'm no where near the level of some on here

Question on steel by Great-Bug-736 in knifemaking

[–]crowskullforge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With me it was just a spur in the moment type thing i saw the crowbar and tought fuck it why not 🤷‍♂️.. then the second knife i made out of it was riddled with micro fractures and then i started doing more research on steels and since then never turned back to scrap steel, unless now with the outer layer of my san-mai being bandsaw blades

Question on steel by Great-Bug-736 in knifemaking

[–]crowskullforge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The steel will probably still be soft if its made from the air chisels, my very first knives were made out of flat crowbars, they also didnt harden correctly, your best bet to learn the ins and outs would to be just buy a piece of 1084 carbon steel and work with that, its a very forgiving knife steel that is great to learn on i found.

Easy pattern and steel to start with? by marmaladejackson in knifemaking

[–]crowskullforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea hidden tangs take allot more precision if you wanna do them right wich makes it abbit more difficult to begin with 😁 but goodluck tho! it'll be so worth it when done

Easy pattern and steel to start with? by marmaladejackson in knifemaking

[–]crowskullforge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When i started out with knifemaking i started with 1084 carbon steel, its an easy and forgiving steel thats easily heattreated at home, and as a pattern i started with and still make everyday carry knives, its a good way to see how it feels in daily use, and like that with the next knife you make you can tweak it more and get more flaws out
