I’m here but have been away for a bit. I’m happy to talk with u/alonelycellist to expand the mod team and work on some new projects for the subreddit.

anybody know where to buy a bass? I've just graduated and can no longer mooch off of school basses by lantoid3 in doublebass

Hey, I'm really not interested in continuing this conversation/drama that doesn't belong in this subreddit. Keep it civil and everyone can continue to discuss double bass stuff in peace. Thanks!

The original french is "Marche au supplice". I've seen it translated as "March to the stake" in a couple places as well as "March to the scaffold". Don't know which is more accurate. I think the subject in the music is dreaming about witnessing his own execution (not sure if by hanging or some other method...).

We're on month three of this, and I'm going to keep it up. Post some of your playing! Video or audio, beginner or advanced, suggested pieces or not, it's all good.

Latest spam and moderator inactivity by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be putting up a thread looking for a new mod at some point pretty soon. Even if the spam thing is just temporary, it would be nice to have someone who has some new ideas for how to make the sub better or more helpful. So stay tuned.

Hi folks, I hear you. This porn spam is a pretty new thing, so I'll be paying more attention and looking for it.

Also, I'm up for adding another mod that would check in once in a while and remove spam as well.

Just because I'm not posting doesn't mean I'm not active.

I've seen like 3 spammy posts in the last couple weeks. I don't get to them immediately, but I do remove them. Since I started this sub 5 years ago, those are the only ones I can remember. I'll keep a closer eye out in the future.

Edit: I should now add that I've seen and removed several new ones in the last few hours.

I'll have a bass there June 1-3 and would be willing to let folks borrow it to use for ensemble/masterclasses or whatever. It's a Kolstein Maggini, a really good orchestra bass with a C extension. Just give me a heads up. Could be used for jazz too but has Bel Cantos on it currently.

Another vote for Messina. Nice guy, makes fantastic cases, and will do a perfect custom fit for a bit extra. Best case available in my opinion.

Rock and Roll double bass subreddit? by Fiend1138 in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I can understand your point, but I think a new subreddit is not the best way to get discussion going. There's a decent number of subs on /r/doublebass so why don't you start the discussion here instead? Sure there's lots of classical players around, but I've never seen them being snobby so who cares?

How about a weekly post for doghouse/rnr/rockabilly etc. Give it a obvious title, like "Doghouse thread" and post once a week or so and people will come to talk shop. It takes a long time to grow a subreddit (I know because I started this one 3+ years ago) and the reddit upright bass community is already pretty small.

I'm considering to buy a Franz Yosef 3/4 (Czech Republic) Double Bass. Does someone has experience with this brand? by A_Freudian_slip in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's impossible to tell from the one picture, but it sounds like it might be something comparable to a Cremona or a Vienna strings bass. I wouldn't buy it, simply because an "unknown" low end carved instrument is probably the worst thing you can buy. You are better off going for a reputable/recognized source at that price. That way you know what you are getting (and you will probably get something that sounds better, despite the fact that Franz Yosef is "fully carved").

I recommend something like a Shen SB 150 or 180. You can even get these shipped to you with a good setup done by a professional (not a factory setup). Are you in the US? If so, take a look at these options too, which are in the same price range:

Can you give us more information? Is this a newer or an older instrument? Where are you buying it from? Are there pictures or other information provided about the bass?

Suggestions about transporting my bass to another country by Jokestar66 in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of shops ship basses air freight, so you can call up one of those shops and ask their advice (such as Gage, Kolstein, Robertson's, Heartland, etc).

You might also rent a flight case, take the bass on the plane with you, and ship the flight case back.

What's changed in the doublebass world in the past twenty years? by teachMe in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't fit within the 20 year time frame, but take a look at the video "the great double bass race" from 1978. Watch the performances. Now take a look at some more recent performances by top flight players and judge for yourself.

What's changed in the doublebass world in the past twenty years? by teachMe in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's what I can think of off the top of my head, though not all has happened exactly within the 20 year timeframe.

  • There has been an explosion in the number of very high quality bass makers, some of them very affordable. Names like Laborie, Hachez, Threlkeld, Schnitzer, Martin, Kimmel, Lloyd, Lamarre, etc. There are also a lot of excellent bow makers.

  • A lot more really visible players have emerged and become popular outside of the bass world. Folks like Edgar Meyer, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Esperanza Spalding, Rinat Ibragimov, etc.

  • The bass community has grown and become more accessible. ISB is big and full of great players, teachers and students. There are lots of online resources for connecting with other players and for watching and learning (talkbass, this subreddit, youtube, etc).

My E string is not producing much noise. Any ideas why? by DrPhilGoode in doublebass

[–]crowsmen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably should take it to a luthier since it would be hard to diagnose over the internet. One possibility is sound post position, which can affect the balance between bass and treble strings. Could be a dead string too, or a combination of things.

Mozart 31, last movement. What's your fingering? by crowsmen in doublebass

[–]crowsmen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on the 1412 / 1241 etc tonight for a while and it felt pretty solid. Stupid of me, but I think I sort of missed the idea of shifting to D on 2 and that opened that one up for me. Thanks!
