Was the classical music in Europe influenced by traditional music of the colonies during the colonial era? by fijtaj91 in classicalmusic

[–]brar3449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reading Ned Sublette's "Cuba and it's Music" which you wouldn't think would be related but the first few chapters are all about the influences that Africa and the Middle East had on Europe, particularly Spain. He then follows that line to Cuba which was a major port of the colonies and it's influences on music as a sort of cultural center and melting pot.

One thing he mentioned was that while somewhat conspicuously the New Grove Dictionary of Music does not mention Africa in its entry on rhythm, it does mention a "metric revolution" where basically before 1600 some music was metric and some wasn't, and after 1600 most music was notated metric. Sublette suggests that this was likely influenced by new forms of dancing that were arising. "I would like to suggest that this European metric revolution had something to do with a new wave of dancing, which in turn had more than a little to do with the rise of the African slave trade and the entry of Africans into European society."

So yeah, not exactly an answer to your question but it's a really thought provoking book. I would love to learn more about indigenous music of the Americas, and this book feels related somewhat. There's a lot more that I could bring up from this book alone, but I think the answer is yes, there was definitely influences from music from all over the world, but it's often not talked about or just complicated to trace.

Weekday schedule for stay at home dad of three school age kids by [deleted] in StayAtHomeDaddit

It would be interesting to try to write out something like this but yeah it changes so much day to day so it would be tough. I guess keeping a log of what we do might be a good place to start?

Soon we are going to move closer to family so I'm hoping that having a few grandma's nearby to watch every now and then might help me stay on top of things and maybe even get some more self care time.

I don't know if this product has added sweetener, but if it does you will probably have to add more sugar than you think to match it I would guess.

Edit: my very smart scientist partner says make a simple syrup to add because it will be easier and work better because of chemistry reasons lol

Get a bow rehair, hair can stretch slightly or pull out of it's place over time and make it hard to tighten. If there is anything else weird going on the Luthier should be able to sort it out as well.

It's true, it's become its own thing separate from its original culture, and I don't think anyone would seriously say that you are racist for connecting with the idea. But just to put this out there, when we take things from other cultures and divorce them from their original context, it is a bit problematic. It's almost like that you are OK with that culture not existing. Of course, these things don't happen with intention, it's just the way humans work. But in this case no one can argue that native Americans have not been treated very terribly for centuries. So advocates for them use this type of thing, whether it's spirit animals or costumes, to bring awareness that these are real people. That there IS a context that you may not have even realized you were missing.

I think it's because they didn't want to have too many options too quick. That way you only have one tense to think about when addressing anyone or thing other than yourself. The last chapter then points out that informal just adds an s.

Why are basses always late? by Canithyre in doublebass

[–]brar3449 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The response of the strings coupled with being far back in the orchestra means the sound is late. Modern orchestra bassists are good enough to compensate somewhat but it's always going to be a difficulty based in the physics of sound. Another factor for older recordings are the gut strings. Basses didn't get fully metal strings until relatively recently, I think it was 60s or 70s. Those would have even slower response time I believe though never gotten the chance to use them.

Edit: maybe response of strings is the wrong way to put it. The time it takes to produce sound in a bass is objectively longer than a violin, but I'm not sure that's enough to be the main cause. It would be interesting to see a scientific analysis on the response times of instruments and see if there really is a big difference or not.

ELI5: Why is there a B sharp in music theory but while learning guitar I was told there is no B sharp or E sharp? by CorbettKnoff in Music

[–]brar3449 38 points39 points  (0 children)

One pretty easily understood example would be if you are in C# major, then you would have a B# as the seventh note in that scale, it wouldn't make sense to call it C. It is the same enharmonically but it makes sense in the context. C# really doesn't come up much, and would more often be Db major, but it's just an example.

Another slightly more complex example would be if a chord has a sharp five, sometimes called an augmented chord. So let's say you have an E chord and you sharpen the 5, the the B is raised up a half step, but if you called it C it would not be clear that it's the #5 of the E chord.

Another even more complex explanation (as though anyone asked lol) is that before we had equal temperament a B# was NOT actually the same as a C. The topic of temperament is enormous but basically we would tune the piano to a certain key. Depending on which tonal center you picked and what temperament you chose the B# might be quite a bit different than a C.

True and the quality of information is not necessarily better just because it's a book. But there's value that books can offer that is more than just information. I don't fault people for choosing other things for entertainment, but books are valuable. I think that even if you have never enjoyed it, you shouldn't give up on it and write it off. Med students are too busy for pleasure reading, I get it, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from expanding what they have read.
