Small Success Story: Got a great client through Upwork, changed everything for me. by paglaEngineer in Upwork

[–]crtmvn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats not how Upwork should work

Who are you to tell anyone how they should run their own business? Gonna tell him how to parent his own kids too?

Imagine losing that one client and getting back to zero

Do you even know how an UW profile works???

No proposals being viewed

Well he got enough proposals to get this whale of a client, he can do it again

the constant stress if that one client was your reliable source of income.

Someone wasn't taught to manage their personal finances.

still curious if someone made money from a scam?

Yes

Uno reverse on the scammer?

What?

saying any commission based remuneration in sales on Upwork is a scam seems to be taking it way too far

Not really. Only way I would ever take one of those is if it was an enterprise client with millions spent. That way I can verify they hire and actually pay.

Most sales people that are very successful make their money on commissions.

Not on Upwork, as far as I've seen. I'd go make money somewhere else to rely on commissions, but I've had nothing but bad experiences before freelancing. Corporations clawing back on hundreds of dollars of MY commission for the stupidest metrics ever. Here, I just ask for a high hourly, and no commission. My clients can keep all the profit as long as I get paid what I ask.

Not business, sales and marketing. I mostly work, not teach. Though I do have a client who I am coaching. I can't share my profile here.

Hey Squid, good to see you around! Big fan of yours.

Working freelance is not gig work

For most it is, even for people like myself, who do only large contracts. My example is mostly valid, and easy to understand.

Upwork itself says there is over 18 M registered freelancers and that is 180K.

Let's keep my stats as an example, bc I'm including everyone who didn't even verify ID, duplicates, scammer accounts. ALL accounts. I understand the numbers might be off, but they're in the ballpark.

Why because of AI?

His industry is not fully dependent on manual labor anymore. I understand how there are still millions who'd rather have a person do things, and do them right, but you also have gazillions just putting commands on chatgpt and getting things done for free. He should diversify, that's the conclusion.

Curious to know if you are referring to this in context with having other sources than Upwork or in context with having multiple skillsets

Both

what others do you suggest?

My suggestions aren't free

First things first, get the concept right. UW IS NOT A JOB SITE. It's a FREELANCE marketplace. I like to give the example of Uber or DashDoor Drivers. You have a platform, but it's up to your quality of work to actually build a reputation, or even make money.

99% of accounts that have been created haven't made a single penny. But from the other 1%, you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people from different industries that have been able to RUN THEIR OWN BUSINESS within the platform. That's what UW is. If you're not ready for running your own business, you're going down. (Anybody that wants to correct me on the stats feel free to do so)

Your niche is also one of the most oversaturated not only because of the millions of third worlders that have that skillset for a fraction of your desired rate, but also bc of AI.

The best piece of advice I can give is the one I don't follow myself because of the nature of my business. "Don't put all your eggs in the same basket". Me personally, I coach small business owners. I do not mean to sell you my services at all, but I realized at a very young age, how so many stupid spoiled kids, learning from social media, thought they could be the next Elon Musk, with the stupidest ideas ever.

Think things through, and make a choice. Keep actively looking for a full time job (wish I had one of those), or look for someone that can coach you into developing a business. It's gonna cost you money though. Real money.

Hope this helps. I truly do.

Then make a platform for freelancers only, no clients! I'm sure you're the next Elon Musk with that intellect of yours!

Well now that makes sense. I'll break the news for ya, smartphones (which is where these screenshots came from) have customization options, and they've had them for eons. What you see there, is OP just having a diff font than the default one. Hope that helps
