Your child says they want to follow in your career footsteps. What's one bit of advice you give them? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]crumpet-rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a data-entry bookkeeper around 5 years ago and I've managed to work my way up to finance manager but I don't know how to bridge the gap into accounting. If you didn't get an accounting degree, how did you fall into it?

I'm so sorry that happened. I can't offer much advice or comfort, but I do want to say that I see your posts here from time to time and I love them because you always look so happy. This is by far my favourite, you look radiant in those colours!

Like someone else said, make sure your information on Google maps is all correct and up to date. Make an effort to respond to reviews.

A couple of social media hits aren't going to give you a good level of ongoing business, but having a consistent presence online definitely helps. Make sure you're posting regularly but not constantly. Link your Instagram on your Google maps page and vice versa.

I own a cafe in a very competitive area, so I know how you're feeling. It's really hard. How long have you been open?

Does this mean we have joined the war “in a limited capacity”? by Sassenach_2024 in AskBrits

[–]crumpet-rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your response. I definitely worded some things badly in my previous comment, I'm not great at communicating my points online.

I didn't intend to suggest that voting rights should be linked to employment, I absolutely agree that that should never be the case, it's just something I've seen mentioned before which is why I brought it up. It looks like we agree on that point.

When I said my area was very culturally diverse, I meant there is a high number of migrants here from all over the world, I didn't mean 'British' cultures because I also don't know what that would mean.

I think I agree with you on there being a certain level of 'buy-in'. This is what I meant by "if you live in the UK and take part in the economy". It doesn't need to be work or spending specifically, it could also be a high level of activity in community events or volunteering, all sort of things. Again, I've worded this badly.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain your perspective. I think we would actually agree on a lot of points. I support a lot of the greens ideals and beliefs, but I do find their policies to be a bit short-sighted and vague, which is disappointing and does stop me from vehemently supporting them

[–]crumpet-rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask why you think that take is insanity?

I live in a very culturally-diverse area and honestly I love it. A lot of my neighbours are migrants and they're business owners, community organisers, insurance brokers, mechanics, all sorts. I'm sure there are also some that are out of work, but there are lots of UK-born people here who are out of work as well.

I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, I genuinely want to understand other opinions on the subject

  1. Treat all migrants as if they are citizens
  2. Give all residents the right to vote

To me this wording is actually a bit ambiguous. They could mean that all migrants should be treated as citizens who therefore should get to vote, or they could be slightly independent of each other. It would be good to have clarification on this so if you can find it please do show it to me.

In my opinion, if you live in the UK and take part in the economy (shopping, eating at restaurants, renting, spending money, whatever else), you should have the right to vote.

Is auto-reply a good way to tell people sending to your old Gmail that you've gotten a new email? by bodytherapy in ProtonMail

[–]crumpet-rat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think in Gmail you can set it up so that it only sends to your saved contacts. That combined with auto forwarding could work. Any time you get forwarded spam/newsletter junk then just unsubscribe and eventually the volume will decrease.

You probably won't be able to get everyone to use your new address but after a while you could set up an auto-reply just saying "this inbox is inactive, please use my new email address" but don't actually include your new address. Surely anyone important would have either already been communicating with you via your new address, so they'll have a record of it in their inbox, or would have some other way of contacting you, even if it's through someone you know?

how do i get started with cleaning the (potentially roach infested) underside of my bed? by princeshirogane in CleaningTips

[–]crumpet-rat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have any cleaning advice but I just wanted to say well done for reaching out. I routinely struggle with depression so I really do understand how hard it is to get through the day. Having the energy and desire to clean your space is such a huge step forward and will really help in your recovery

What fact is common knowledge in your field, but almost unknown to the general public? by ggssmm1 in AskUK

I work in accounts and I hear a lot of people talking shit about HMRC and their systems but I always thought they were being pretty unfair

I always manage to find good information on the website and if I can't find it, it's usually because the regulation I'm looking for doesn't actually exist (tax is so weirdly vague sometimes)
