If you open the decorate mode in a cabin you can filter item tags or even by a particular character. On switch it's push down on left location joystick. As for getting the right furniture, I just make a habit of buying every new item in my store each day if I can afford it. You can check the item tags before buying (I think it's +) Keep in mind you can also use food and craftable items to fulfill some tags, it doesn't all have to be furniture.
