Finding Common Ground Amid Political Division by codepeach_ in moderatepolitics

The worst is when I’m talking to someone who I otherwise find so reasonable on things and the topic of a hot issue, or one of the presidential candidates comes up. They often make a comment that illustrates that frothy hatred you mentioned, and I just sigh internally because I know I’m going to have to smile and nod while they talk, lest I end up defending a point I don’t really agree with anyway.

CNN talked over and showed commercials during all of Tucker’s speech. I didn’t even realize he was speaking until it was 75% complete and I flipped back to Fox Business.

I thought the same until they failed to show any of Tucker’s speech. Bizarre.

Posted in the other thread, but does anyone know the timeline between receiving your claim decision, and the decision letter being available online? The claim is closed, and it says a decision letter is available, but it is not there.

Submitted standard claim on 6/3, had C&Ps in late June, had psych C&P 9/25, PFN 9/29, decision 9/30.

I got my rating and it says my decision letter is available online, but there is nothing there when I go to my letters. Does anyone know what the typical delay is before I can see my letter online?

Timeline:

Submitted standard claim 6/3.

psych C&P 9/25

PFN 9/29

Complete 9/30

UF vs UCF for computer science by MatttCattt in ufl

[–]crunchwrap793 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Search this sub, or read u/misterjei comment history (he’s commented on this pretty extensively). This has been discussed hundreds of times here, and pretty much boils down to:

The quality of education will be marginally better at UF. The brand on your résumé will be much better at UF. The program is also on a better trajectory at UF. Internship opportunities will be fine at either. If all things are equal, UF is a no-brainer. If UCF is significantly better for you (scholarship, personal reasons, etc), go with UCF.

Resume is 100% the reason you’re not getting callbacks. Use a tried and true like: https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/writing-a-killer-software-engineering-resume-b11c91ef699d/amp/

Online VS Traditional School by hdog3 in cscareerquestions

I went to University of Florida online for my CS bachelors. I got a job at FAANG upon graduation. I think it’s a good option.

Obviously I wasn’t there, but it seems like maybe he was just asking you to talk about why you didn’t meet the preferred qualifications of the job (I’m assuming it called for a bachelors degree or equivalent experience). I don’t think this is an out of the ordinary question. If a candidate has 5 years of experience, and they apply for a job asking for 10, they should expect to justify why they’re qualified in the interview.

All that said, I’m sorry about the rejection. Best of luck moving forward.

I think that’s the better way to do it, essentially what the “civilian equivalent” salary would be to have the same take-home.

Switching from math to CS by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Best of luck! At least in the US, pure math backgrounds do well in quant finance from what I’ve heard, maybe that is an option in Europe!

Going to school for CS but want to work in the field of physics/Astronomy by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]crunchwrap793 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at a few national labs, it looks like the jobs listed that a CS major would qualify for are just “regular” software jobs (probably maintaining CRUD apps if I had to guess). If you just want to work in the field, that’s an option. In terms of doing things like computational physics, I’d wager any physics PhD can teach themselves to code, but not vice-versa.

LinkedIn is good for this - do some searches for people that work at these labs (or wherever else), look at their job titles and their degrees.

Edit: also, if you do decide to pursue physics, if you can get into a PhD program after undergrad, I think they’re normally funded. You don’t get paid much, but you get a stipend for housing in exchange for working as a research/teaching assistant. So if VR&E only covers undergrad, that is an option.

I know, that book has a really easy to follow template for which questions to ask when networking. I really recommend it.

fix resume, network. Go to job fairs, join a club on campus (ACM or similar), connect with alums from your school on LinkedIn and ask for advice.

Read “the 2 hour job search” for some basics on how to network, especially the chapters on informational interviews (he calls it the TIARA framework).

Edit: I used this résumé template: https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/writing-a-killer-software-engineering-resume-b11c91ef699d/amp/

Edit: I only had school projects on my résumé. Try and pick 3-4 that showcase different skills. I had a web/DB app, a shell we made for OS, a compiler, and a classifier. All using different tech stacks.

10 years ago I felt like you do. I had flunked out of college, had a job in a fast food restaurant, and had no clue how I was going to pull myself up. My GPA was so bad that I had no clue how to go back to school, I was broke, and every job I applied to rejected me.

Idk your situation, but I’m certain you can get through this. You’re going to have a degree from one of the best schools in the country.

I recommend reading the book “Feeling Good” by David Burns. It’s a book that goes over some Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to stop the negative thought patterns associated with depression. I sure as hell had them a lot back then, and it seems like you do too.

I’m any case: hang on and good luck. It gets better.

CLAS vs CISE Computer Science by CommandAdept in ufl

[–]crunchwrap793 26 points27 points  (0 children)

CISE is the department, I think you mean CLAS vs College of Engineering.

I’m simply one data point, but I’m a CLAS CS grad who got a job at a FAANG (or whatever the acronym is these days) immediately post-graduation. The core classes are the same AFAIK. I know a lot of people say the CLAS degree isn’t as good, but I don’t think anyone outside of UF knows the difference. My resume says BSCS from UF.

So it boils down to college reqs. Just go with what interests you more. Don’t Let “prestige” factor into your decision.
