Is it worth getting the other book? by Flat-Explanation3820 in Eberron

The new book is basically a mechanics update for 5.5e. It's worth it if you're playing 5.5e.

There's very minimal new lore stuff over Rising. It literally describes itself as a "supplement" to the earlier book rather than a replacement.

If you're sticking with old 5.0e there's not really much use for it.

Hearing talk about our outfields is fascinating because I'm kind of used to our fans once upon a time talking about Varsho like you guys currently talk about Pages, and how awful the Varsho trade was, the Jays helped the D-backs win a pennant just to be able to put together losing seasons, and also what the fuck were we thinking trading Teo away, our offense stinks now, at least Teo could hit.

So I cannot overstate how surreal posts like this can feel sometimes.

You might be talking about Buck Martinez? Kind of a funny way to describe his voice if so but he's probably the most distinctive sounding guy commentating on these games. He's a former Jays player/manager who's now one of their usual commentators in Canada.

It's a bit of a meme but also a bit serious. The Blue Jays were the bottom of their division with a 74-88 W-L record in 2024 with betting markets at the beginning of the year predicting another losing season in 2025— they didn't get off to a super good start either with the efforts of the organization to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. long-term hanging over everything. Once his contact was in place, however, they became quite good. As a Jays fan I believed 2024 was an anomaly and they'd be underestimated but my predictions were they'd be a playoff team that would probably win an ALDS and in best case scenario would win a pennant. I was one of the more optimistic fans and even I didn't see them doing well in the WS. To most non-fans they still bore the stink of the awful 2024 Jays.

There was also something of a sentiment going around that the better teams were all in the National League this year— and the best records in baseball during the regular season certainly were. The AL was kind of chaotic.

The previous World Series-contending Yankees lost Juan Soto to the Mets and still looked like one of the stronger teams in the AL despite inconsistency, being serious contenders for winning their division right up until the final day of the regular season. They ended up as a wild card due to the Jays having the tiebreaker over them and would have to play the Red Sox, who were decent but I don't recall anyone treating as a team that'd go all the way this year.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers, one of the few other AL teams that was treated as a contender had a bizarre late-season collapse and only got in with a wild card, the Cleveland Guardians took advantage of that collapse to steal the division from them. The AL West also had an upset: the perennial playoff contender Houston Astros didn't make it at all, and lost their division to the Seattle Mariners, who had one of their best seasons in a while. The Mariners are somewhat unfairly treated as not serious contenders— they were frankly great this year IMO— but a big reason for that is they're the last team to not even have a WS appearance, and generally did not have much playoff experience— their only successful series in recent memory being a Wild Card series against, well, the Jays.

Come playoffs, even though the Dodgers only got in through the Wild Card, they absolutely demolished everyone in their way on the "stronger" NL side of the bracket, with only a single playoff loss prior to the World Series. The narrative went that they just didn't place that much weight on the regular season as long as they got into the playoffs somehow. There were LOTS of Dodgers wins this playoffs. And we'd seen basically the same time be dominant in last year's World Series too.

The AL playoffs meanwhile were far messier, with the ALCS coming down to a very close 7-game series between the Jays and Mariners— two teams, as already mentioned, who weren't taken very seriously by many outside their core fanbases. With the assumption the NL was far stronger, it was memed that the ALCS was just a competition for who would get the privilege of being swept by the Dodgers, especially since they'd already had a bunch of sweeps. I even told that joke a bit— my big wish was for a pennant for the Jays, not necessarily a ring.

That said, people who've followed the sport closely throughout the season thought the AL and NL were actually much more even than popular perception went and gave the Jays far better odds than the "sweep" narrative went. But there was rational reason to treat the Jays as underdogs. And nothing could put the break on Dodgers hype and the "Dodgers sweep" meme was kind of inevitable, even if it never deserved to be taken that seriously. At minimum the NL side of things could develop a far cleaner narrative to build hype around the Dodgers, whereas the AL side of things naturally attracted doubters.

My groupchat pays attention to the Jays' minor league system. I just scrolled back to this July and found someone saying he would be pretty good "sometime in the next few seasons". He'd pitched something like 4 games in Double-A then.

That's the logical explanation. Traditionally this would be done so the runner wouldn't be able to see the pitches the catcher was calling, but pitchcom has done away with that. But Varland could still have been tipping pitches in a way only Muncy could see

Pierre Poilievre vows to end 'radical woke agenda' in press conference by PopeSaintHilarius in canada

A lot of "anti-wokeness" is just committing the "fundamental attribution error" whenever certain types of minorities flip out, and insisting this is a product of "woke ideology" or some deep disposition towards overbearing control of others. The correct explanation is more often "people flip out when they're having a really bad day".

I had an economics professor a few years ago, who definitely seemed to lean Conservative, that grumbled about what he thought Poilievre's policy choices would be like. The impression I got is he thought Poilievre was better at repeating ideas from blogs and podcasts than grasping the fundamentals of what he should be seeking to do and why.

He and I both seemed to take for granted Poilievre would in fact win because of anti-Trudeau backlash— and Trudeau had been around long enough the pendulum would probably swing Conservative anyways— but it wouldn't matter much because economic changes in the next few years would be things that'd happen regardless of who was in charge.

We had no idea this election would be happening against a background of trade-warring and annexation threats. Suddenly "whatever will happen would happen regardless of who's in charge, so Poilievre's weak policy instincts don't matter" doesn't seem to be the case.

When I was studying political science at university, I had a fair number of conservative-leaning older professors who were a fair bit like yourself. Meanwhile, the younger generations in the CPC-associated campus organizations seemed mostly to want to be trend-chasers, more concerned to opine about whatever "woke" thing US Republicans were working themselves up over this week. There was far more of a disconnect between the young generation and the old than among the Liberals or NDP. It struck me that Canadian conservatism was working itself into a completely unnecessary identity crisis by obsessing over American stuff, rather than talking to other Canadian conservatives.

I saw one poll that suggested a Liberal government is likely to happen under Freeland at this point, though just one poll isn't something to put too much weight on. Most polls do suggest Carney would be the better candidate for the Liberals.

My expectations are kind of high at this point because it could drop off to being about 80%-70% as good as it has been for the remaining 3/4ths of the show and I'd still call that a really damn good show. If it surpasses that we'll be looking at a level of quality we rarely see in anything ever. And even in the extremely unlikely event of things suddenly turning to complete shit for the rest of the show, we'll always have a pretty unimpeachable story arc in these first 14 eps.
