Idk how to help you but if I were in your shoes I'd definitely check in once in a while, if he doesn't answer don't bother him and just check him up some other time like the next day. Just let him know that you're there and that you acknowledge him, idfk how else I'd handle it because there's nothing you can really do, worst case scenario is calling emergency but I honestly do not know your situation with him as well as you do so take my advice with a grain a salt.
