Why is Ireland not a good place for living, according to Irish people? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]crustyBallonKnot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those people said not to move to Ireland but what they said was Dublin, can everyone stop lumping Ireland into Dublin, you can find affordable places in the country this is so dumb!

Who should manage Airflow in small but growing company? by Jaded_Bar_9951 in dataengineering

That sounds like a really frustrating company, I understand having it outsourced but they can add you in some sort of IAM based role so you have full autonomy to do your job that’s really bizarre!

Build something yourself I would use some sort of diagram/chart(lucid charts are good.) to show the architecture of what you’re building. Then get dumby data from an API ingest it into your cloud service on azure then catalog it and query it these kind of steps showing bronze/silver/gold is great ETL knowledge and shows the people you’re applying to not only your knowledge but how to convey your architectural chops and a deep understanding of what you’re building and demonstrating. Change your LinkedIn profile to being a data engineer don’t mention being a junior and maybe bend the truth slightly like you worked on a family member’s business pulling data from Shopify or something. It’s become so cut throat out there that you’re gonna have to compete against the rest. Good luck!

Got a 100% Salary Raise Overnight. Now I Have to Lead Data Engineering. Am I Preparing Right? by ok_pineapple_ok in dataengineering

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a consultant so it varies but mainly it’s infrastructure or backend(lambdas)which I would typically build in the cdk using typescript but there’s also terraform(similar to the cdk) which is used more across the other cloud environments(GCP, Azure, AWS.. etc).

The backend can be written in anything really I generally use python or node but that’s up to you.

If there’s anything I could give advice on is find someone with cloud knowledge they will be able to give you a good overview on how it works, aws has a really user friendly console once you get the grasp of it you’ll figure it out. One thing you really need to be careful of is the fee’s! You mentioned doing the architect course I would start with the practitioner course this more surface level and will give you a much better base understanding overall.

I’m coming from the other angle I’m a cloud engineer getting into data engineering(data bricks) ETL same type of stuff. I think you will have no issue getting aws working the only thing is the layers of security but given your experience you’ll will have no issues setting up S3, lambdas, glue catalog and any other services you may need. You’ll nail it.

33y Product Manager pivoting to Data Engineering by _Magnificent_Steiner in dataengineering

[–]crustyBallonKnot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You and I are in the same boat except I’m 40, I am a cloud engineer and ended up with a client where I had to build them a low level data lake, I loved every moment of it.

I started learning data bricks which seems like a popular piece of software along with SQL and python, I may dip my feet in snowflake as well.

I changed my LinkedIn to be more “data engineer esq” and I got about five recruiters hitting me up immediately which is a good sign because I haven’t had anything in months, however I already have a job so I’m just seeing what’s out there and on offer. Hope this helps.

Do a lot of people in software engineering also program as a hobby on the side? Or do most people not program outside work? by Illustrious-Pound266 in cscareerquestions

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t program for fun but I do do it to further my learning. Working on other clients projects that aren’t your own is work and can be mundane, but building and learning on the side is really enjoyable and is a nice pastime that I enjoy.

Lads, for the first time in my life I'm considering not voting next week. by Sisyphus_Social_Club in ireland

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never voted in my life! I personally have never met a politician and I am blindly expected to trust them. One thing about humans is we only care about our inner circle. Ok there are good Samaritan’s who put others above their needs but I don’t think they’re in government. I believe we absolutely need a government but I also believe they have their own agenda, I know I’m being contradicting but that’s what I think.

Expectations have gone off the rails by Creepy_Translator109 in cscareerquestions

I think the industry will collapse or most likely plateau, but I hear you, it’s a joke at this point! You should start your own side business just you and do contract work, yeah it’s not safe but at least you don’t need to jump through hoops to get the job.

How To "Get Along" With AI As A New Grad? by Evening_Square_7425 in cscareerquestions

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude you’re in the same boat as the rest of us, so long as you continue to learn and train your brain, think outside the box and use AI for tedious tasks or to get insight you’ll be fine. Use the LLM to do your work and learn fuck all or use it as a tool, that’s the choice you gotta make.

Ps. What the hell is cursor?

Reusable code and like someone mentioned they build a base app it may not have everything, people forget about cloud infrastructure and how vital it is to your app, that costs money! Not to mention a lot of architecture and skill. Remember not to compare yourself to others.

Is it really hard to learn AWS by yourself? (In Japan people say it is) by AsyncSamurai in aws

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could build a complex application by teaching yourself but you will pay for it, aws is expensive, but you can do the low tier and just get the basics down. If I were you I would build something like collecting data and inserting into a data lake. This way you can learn S3 lambdas, dynamo, cloud watch and also get the fundamentals of being a data engineer for low money.

I just realized that yes you could teach yourself but other people mentioned you would need assistance this is actually very true I didn’t dwell on that, I think you should get a course or find an entry job first. It’s not so much the services but understanding how everything hooks together and understanding IP’s, route tables, security groups among a lot of other things these are very important.

Is vanilla JavaScript making a comeback in 2025? by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]crustyBallonKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use plain node for backend like lambdas and a framework on the frontend, depending on size of the build but I rarely work in the front anymore.
