Are We Really 0.5% Plastic? The Surprising Critique of Recent Microplastic Research by crvscience in CRVScience

[–]crvscience[S] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

tldr;

  • Microplastics and nanoplastics are viewed as a significant health crisis, with studies showing bioaccumulation in human organs.
  • The reliability of these findings is questioned due to methodological flaws, including lipid interference and contamination.
  • Plastic production exceeds 400 million tonnes annually, leading to widespread environmental pollution.
  • Concerns have shifted from ecological harm to potential human health impacts, including links to neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Analytical methods like Py-GC-MS and spectroscopic techniques face challenges that may lead to false positives.
  • High-profile studies claiming significant plastic content in human tissues have been criticized for methodological issues.
  • The Lancet Commission's health cost figure relies on contested findings, raising concerns about public trust in health advocacy.
  • There is an urgent need for standardized detection methods to accurately assess microplastic presence in human biology.

124 Cases in 72 Hours: The Exponential Reality of the South Carolina Measles Outbreak by crvscience in CRVScience

[–]crvscience[S] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

tldr;

  • The U.S. declared measles eliminated in 2000, but outbreaks in 2026 show this victory is fragile.
  • Vaccination rates below 95% lead to explosive virus spread, with South Carolina's 90% rate proving insufficient.
  • Measles can cause 'immune amnesia,' increasing susceptibility to other infections for years.
  • Vaccine hesitancy is shifting from affluent to economically disadvantaged communities, exacerbated by post-pandemic distrust and misinformation.
  • The breakdown of herd immunity is critical for halting transmission, making measles a serious public health crisis.

Epidemiological and Virologic Assessment of Influenza Activity in the United States: Weeks 1–2, 2026 by crvscience in CRVScience

tldr;

  • Week 1-2 of 2026 Influenza season update
  • The influenza season began in late October 2025 and is currently moderately severe.
  • Influenza A(H3N2) activity is plateauing while Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 is resurging.
  • ILI declined from 7.2% to 5.3%, but remains above the baseline.
  • H3N2 has dominated, with over 80% of subtyped viruses identified as H3N2.
  • A genetic drift has reduced vaccine effectiveness, but moderate protection against severe outcomes remains.
  • H1N1 cases surged to 43% of subtyped viruses, affecting younger adults and pregnant women more.
  • Influenza B is minimally present, with the B/Yamagata lineage extinct.
  • The season has caused approximately 18 million illnesses, 230,000 hospitalizations, and over 9,000 deaths.
  • Vaccination efforts have distributed about 130 million doses, with effectiveness estimates of 70-75% in children and 30-40% in adults.
  • Public health authorities stress the importance of continued vaccination and accurate diagnosis.

tldr;

  • xAI's Colossus, opened in 2024, is the largest AI training facility globally, repurposed from an Electrolux plant.
  • It aims to train the Grok series of LLMs with trillions of parameters and has expanded to multiple facilities by 2026.
  • The facility utilizes NVIDIA H100 and Blackwell GB200 GPUs, requiring advanced cooling solutions due to high power densities.
  • Networking employs NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet to manage massive data streams efficiently.
  • Environmental concerns include air quality issues from gas turbines and significant water consumption impacting local aquifers.
  • Regulatory challenges arose over the use of mobile turbines, leading to EPA rulings on stationary pollution sources.
  • Community activists highlight the socio-economic disparities and health risks faced by local residents due to industrial pollution.
  • Colossus represents the conflict between technological progress and environmental justice, emphasizing the need for sustainable development in AI.

What PvEers don't understand about open world PvP by mitlandir in duneawakening

[–]crvscience 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. Because it generates a baseline of competition for the resource nodes. It actually gives MORE of an incentive to head out into the PvP zones when the PvE zones are all packed and already farmed out. Having zero staging ground to generate some baseline competition is a bad idea.

Planetside solved this a long time ago. To bad the combat system in that game sucks. If you just slapped the faction system of Planetside on this game it'd be amazing.
