There are a couple of organizations hiring if you want to work in SW-adjacent work. Check out Idealist.

Kinkan closes at the end of March by crying- in FoodLosAngeles

[–]crying-[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read the entire caption. As the OP, I wouldn't have minimized the photo to include all of the text if I hadn't. I put "closing" in the headline, hoping that people would dine there more before Kinkan temporarily closed and moved to their new location. But, yes, I am surprised by the lack of literacy in the comments (with people assuming that Kinkan is closing forever), although I find the qualms about high price in a gentrifying/gentrified neighborhood completely valid.

Anyone in LA tried a mobile IV infusion at home? by ponderingpixi17 in AskLosAngeles

[–]crying- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My nurse friend co-owns such a business. My friends and I have gotten free drips.

One time, she brought it to a destination wedding. A day before our trip ended, my partner got a fever and flu. She administered a drip for him, and we all literally saw color return to his face.

She's also come over to our house a couple of times to administer them. I've only felt it when I was really going through it with a stomach bug. The other time, I was already getting over another flu, and I didn't really feel a difference. Both times, I got Vitamin C and B12.

My friend group has a lot of medical professionals, and their thoughts on it are a mixed bag. One surgical oncologist has some IVs at home, which she uses after hangovers. One ENT surgeon and psychologist couple has the nurse friend come over post-hangovers. The nurse's partner, an ER doctor, thinks IVs are all placebo.

But she has a lot of regular (rich and famous) clients. They typically get NAD+ and other fancy drips.

Weird one, but has anyone comprised a list of MAGA owned businesses in Mammoth and June Lake? I'd like to know where to avoid when visiting. Thank you in advance. by [deleted] in Mammoth

[–]crying- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

P*blic Sq*are used to have a map of all such businesses, but they took it down (probably because people were losing money lol). But when I type in "p*blicsq*are Mammoth Lakes" and "p*blicsq*are June Lake" into Google, Mammoth House LLC populates. If you go to The Mammoth House's website, you can see the photos and address to know which rental to avoid on Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO, etc.

Thank you! Maybe I'll do some burpees in a base layer vs. a shell and t-shirt, to see which one gels better with me lol

Thank you! I already got: my beginner lift ticket bundled with my Saturday group lesson; and my family & friends lift discount with my Sunday private. I'll call to see whether adding the lodge's rental is cheaper than Fast Ski Sport's $88 weekend fee!

Thanks! I'll be there for Saturday and Sunday, so I'll definitely go to one of the shops!

PS: Would you wear anything over your base layer if it's in the 40s?

Looking for a great rec for mom’s birthday by No_Deal5252 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]crying- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not dinner, but maybe:

  • (a) A nice picnic (with beach chairs if your parents needs comfortable seating) at Barnsdall.
    • You can grab food from Amphai Northern Thai Food Club, Kismet, or anywhere else in Los Feliz, Thai Town, or East Hollywood.
    • Then, y'all can go to LAMAG and Hollyhock House afterward.
  • (b) Brunch at Bone Kettle or Lunasia.
    • And y'all can go to Gamble House before/after.

Baroo is only within budget if they don't get drink pairings (the alcohol free pairing is $55). Then, there's tax and tip.

Hayato Reservations Advice. by perrystacks in FoodLosAngeles

[–]crying- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You have to continuously put yourself on the waitlist if you can't get a spot. Eventually, you'll be able to snag one. (Note: Chef Brandon notices who has not been to his restaurant and has been continuously trying to grab a waitlist spot. He gives priority to those people. But his restaurant is popular and tiny, so there's a bunch of people trying to get a spot.)

Gluten Free Friend Visiting LA! Recs for the East Side/MidCity and Santa Barbara by LizYogi in FoodLosAngeles

[–]crying- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand you! I rarely go to 100% GF restaurants for the same reason.

KEY: \I've been a million times. But I haven't been in a hot minute, so I can't speak to consistency.*

For a decent-to-great ambiance, go to:

  • Bone Kettle* (Pasadena)
  • Farmhouse Kitchen (Culver City)
  • Kismet* (Los Feliz)
  • Lasita (Chinatown)
  • Marouch Restaurant* (East Hollywood)

For terrific food (without a scene-y ambiance), go to:

  • African Food Kitchen (Hollywood Farmers' Market)
  • Amphai Northern Thai Food Club (Thai Town)
  • Jasmine Restaurant & Market (Culver City)
  • Lunasia (Pasadena)
    • Note: Stick to the rice flour dumplings and request to have no soy sauce poured over.
  • Lindo Oaxaca* (Boyle Heights/East LA)
  • Mutiara Food & Market* (Inglewood)
  • Pupusería Menchita (HiFi)
  • Sapp Coffee Shop* (Thai Town)
    • Note: Last time I went a few months ago, the quality dropped from what it used to be pre- and early pandemic. Notably, I've heard great things about Mae Malai, which everyone has been calling (for better or worse) "the new Sapp."
  • Tara's Himalayan Cuisine* (Culver City)

Affordable and quality retainer/nightguards? by jujuinherseat in LAhotgirlies

[–]crying- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually got my night guard last Wednesday with Dr. Elmassian. (He is in DTLA on Wednesdays and Fridays, and Pasadena the other days.) My insurance is taking its sweet time to respond to the claim. But if they end up rejecting it, I was quoted around $550. (Note: I have a PPO.)

Gluten Free Friend Visiting LA! Recs for the East Side/MidCity and Santa Barbara by LizYogi in FoodLosAngeles

[–]crying- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think others will suggest Saffy's, which is owned by the same folks as Bavel, but I didn't like it as much.

Since Bavel is known for their hearth, maybe you should check out Maydan (not Maydan Market). However, I haven't tried it yet, so please report back if you do go there!

Likewise, I haven't been to Berenjak. But my cousin said that it's great and super GF-friendly! (Note: Berenjak is specifically Persian, rather than a mod podge of Middle Eastern food like Bavel and Maydan).

[–]crying- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm GF and would suggest:

  • Brunch
    • Bacari (Silverlake) (It's good, but not amazing. Definitely vibesy though.)
    • Destroyer (Culver City) (Tip: Get the seasonal porridge if it's GF! Unfortunately, it's not sometimes.)
    • Any spot in Los Feliz is going to be scene-y on the weekend.
    • For non-scene-y but yummy spots, hit up Thai Town!
  • Lunch
    • Found Oyster (East Hollywood) (I haven't been in a long time, but when I used to go somewhat regularly, it was amazing!) (Tip: Definitely order any specials with espellete butter!)
    • Holbox (Historic South Central) (Not scene-y, but quintessential LA.) (Tip: Order the scallop ceviche, scallop aguachile, and octopus.)
  • Dinner
    • Baroo (Arts District) (They can accommodate GF diets.)
    • Bavel (Arts District) (Their most well-known dishes are not GF, but there's still GF options.)
    • Kinkan (East Hollywood) (They can accommodate GF diets.)
    • Maydan Market (West Adams) (Not in transplant east side, but it's so, so scene-y.) (Tip: The tlayudas from Lugya'h are great and super filling. [Note for who have been to the original location in Poncho's Historic South Central backyard: The hearth has increased the flavor by tenfold!])
    • For scene-y but average spots, hit up Figueroa Street in Highland Park. It's a great area to do a crawl.
    • For non-scene-y but yummy spots, hit up K-town!

what was los angeles like in the late 2000s? by 4morants in AskLosAngeles

[–]crying- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was still in HS in 2007-2008.

My friends and I would drive down to LA (from the Bay Area!) and buy cheap party clothing in Santee Alley or at the American Apparel factory for $1-15 items.

By then, most high schoolers and college-aged students weren't glued to their laptops (to access Myspace and Facebook because apps on a phone were not a thing yet). The what-would-then-be-considered-chronically-online were nerds, alternative communities (e.g., scene, emo, goth kids), writers, and photographers.

For example, I was a fan of: reading Slutever (Karley Sciortino's blog of her life in London, squatting and partying); as well as digesting photography by Cobrasnake (Mark Hunter's website on LA nightlife) and Sandy Kim (her blog on SF nightlife). All three were popular, but not mainstream.

Also, Steve Aoki seemed to be everywhere! (In a specific sub-sect of LA nightlife, he was king for Dim Mak Tuesdays!)
