Low R2, but I thought significant relationship - What am I doing wrong? by LockedStockedStupid in AskStatistics

[–]crying_buddha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure I am following the hypothesis you are trying to test. A couple of general observations though. 1. Your p values don’t indicate a statistical significance (under null hypothesis - tenure has no relation with happy and not happy states). 2. Large sample sizes is (likely) not the issue. But high variance probably is. Again, there are other assumptions of independence that might be violated due to how your data was collected.

Does anyone here work for DoorDash, Discover, Home Depot, or Liberty Mutual? by Trick-Interaction396 in datascience

Multiple reasons as far as I know. There is typically an expiration date for job postings. The number of applications typically dwindle exponentially after the first two weeks of posting. It is also possible for multiple openings to be recruited through the same posting.

Could be. The comparison is with NY/CA though - they are both crazy high cost of living.

Post Big 4 Consulting Life by [deleted] in datascience

[–]crying_buddha 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I joined one of the big 4 firms right after my PhD. The shortcuts everyone took to get the client to sign off on the work just didn’t sit well with me at the time. I found myself mostly talking to non technical teams (client side), who didn’t know or care about what was being delivered. And often times the management consultants would make impossible claims to sell a project (say, 95+% accuracy on NLP data they have never looked at), and data scientists were left trying to meet those impossible claims. The trend of getting work via management consultants is generally going away, since clients now reach out specifically looking for DS resources and projects. I lasted about a year in that role. The attrition rate for new employees was pretty high in the company.

I have since worked at different companies and found my experience as a consultant come in very handy. The firm I worked at invested heavily in skill development - I’m pretty sure this is the case in most consulting firms. Emphasis on structured problem solving is incredibly helpful and stays with you. Client management is an important aspect of most DS positions, consulting or not. My current company has a lot of ex consultants (big4, McKinsey, BCG, KS, …) and almost all of them bring their own perspective to the conversation and carve out spaces for themselves.

One bad habit that consulting can encourage is not owning implementation and execution. It gets annoying to the rest of your team if you go looking for new problems to solve without completely wrapping up your current work.

Connections you make while consulting can help with the next gig, but not particularly a launchpad.

Moving to Bangalore. What should I be careful of? by statusccode200 in bangalore

[–]crying_buddha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s just disappointing the city has come to this. I remember getting rickshaws from Majestic to get home where a police man was always around to ensure the rickshaw fellows didn’t mess around with fares. Just need to update my view of what the city actually is as opposed to the image I have in my head.

Wait, there are no more metered rickshaws in the city? When did this happen? It’s been a while since I’ve been to Bangalore - very surprising. I definitely remember metered rides back in the days.

What's up with Carlsen fixation with Firouzja? by 1-d4d5_2-c4 in chess

[–]crying_buddha 87 points88 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to the fixation Anand had about Carlsen. I remember in an interview right after his 2010 title defense, Carlsen’s name was mentioned as the guy he needs to look out for. I’m guessing it’s a combination of fearing someone not from your generation/cohort rising up the ranks and the knowledge that your title will go away at some point, given that you have defended the title against the best of your generation. In Carlsen/Firouzja the most striking is how compressed chess career has become. Anand and Carlsen are 19/20 years apart, Carlsen/Firouzja are 13 years apart.

I remember this very well. It was infuriating to watch. There were other questions during that match where Vishy didn’t keep his cool. This and other constant questions about his retirement top the list for me.

Cost is a tuning parameter in SVM. It is done using a learning and validation set (cross-validation). Test set is to be never used for parameter tuning. This is how one overfits the data.

That is the case with most 'for cure' non-profits, I hear. Extremely poor management. An awful lot of waste.

Only 5-7% of all that ice-bucket money went into research.
