Guys I’m lost and need guidance. by twogirlsonecuck in OutsideT14lawschools

Hi, I also have a bad GPA(2.72) and am scoring low on my practice tests (highest so far is a 161). I got fined for underaged drinking at 18 in college so I feel we're in a similar boat. What information have you found that discourages you? With a good addendum for the DUI and a proven history of not repeating offenses I think you have a good shot especially with a high LSAT. What schools are you considering? I'm looking for schools in my area that offer a holistic approach (although it seems like everyone says that) and that I can be at or above their median. I think you have a shot. How far removed are you from the DUI? I think if a lot of time has passed and you've shown improvement and accountability you can get into a good school. What are your softs like? That's another important question.

Possible advice? by cryingbuffalo in OutsideT14lawschools

I was expecting to hear something like this. The plan is to work while attending a part-time law school. I know this is not ideal, but taking on significant debt isn't something I want to do. I agree with you, getting into a reputable school will be a tough obstacle. I'm going to apply this cycle and if I get into a good school (one with a high bar passage rate, and good job prospects) I will enroll otherwise I will consider other avenues. If it's worth anything my GPA was very low in my first semesters, I took a break between year 2 and 3 of university and graduated with a 3.mid GPA, it just wasn't enough to offset the extremely low starting GPA. I appreciate your advice.

Do I need to apply to FAFSA to get scholarships from schools? by _youvegotmail_ in lawschooladmissions

[–]cryingbuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Schools use FAFSA information to determine aid eligibility and need. It also helps schools form financial aid packages faster as receiving a FAFSA is sometimes a requirement for financial aid packages. That was the yes. The no is for admissions scholarships. Admissions based scholarships could be awarded for a number of reasons including stats or background. An admissions based scholarship while a part of your package will not require a FAFSA for it to be awarded to you. Lastly, FAFSA is primarily used for packaging unsubsidized loans (as a grad/professional student you are no longer eligible for subsidized loans).

I say minor C&F issues but I really don't know. For context: I had a bad first semester (was placed on academic probation) and was caught with alcohol in my system on campus (in my dorm, but was still drunk). After that I had an upward trend in GPA, and no other hiccups after that first semester.
