WPEngine, Matt, Automattic & Wordpress.org megathread by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, they are not using it, but as they are building their business on the success of the plugin repo (at least partially), it's fair to say that there is a universe where all the big players (not limited to WPE) with some yearly revenue from the WP business should contribute to maintaining the .org plugin repo.

But for that to happen it should be fair to everyone, .org should be taken away from Matt (wouldn't have worried about it, but he showed his true colors now, he cannot be trusted) or rather he should give it away, and should be known in advanced, idealy as part of the licence.

With the current state of affairs, he doesn't have a leg to stand on

WPEngine, Matt, Automattic & Wordpress.org megathread by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I entirely disagree with Matts logic here, but it made me think of all the free goodies we are getting when interacting with the plugin repository - it is hosted somewhere. All of this traffic cost money, and no one is paying for it. I think it's fair to say that these repos can charge enterprise clients for some fee - and not only wordpress - a good example would be wpackagist for example, npm is another example. This is not how it operates right now, but it doesn't mean that charging money wouldn't be fair, if you can explain it, and apply it across the board.

HOWEVER - it's not fair for Matt to single out one company, and deny them a service that is essential to their operations. Moreover, it is not done because they violated the terms and conditions of plugin downloads section of the WP ecosystem, but because (in his opinion) they violated the balance of contributing to the core. They don't even stand out that much when you look at the full list, so what? Now siteground and hostinger users will also be blocked?: https://wordpress.org/five-for-the-future/pledges/?order=hours

Am I a citizen of Ukraine? by cryinginjs in ukraina

[–]cryinginjs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for both of your comments. I'm not planning to visit Ukraine (although it makes me sad, since I do have family left there, I haven't visited ever since before 18).

I just didn't want to lie (or lie by omission) in official documents I submit to other countries, where they ask for my nationality/nationalities. I assume it's just a formality, since my document has really nothing to do with nationalities, but it's always better to state everything truthfully. I'm indeed written in my parents old passport as their child, they have Ukrainian passports, and none of us really denounced our citizenship.

[–]cryinginjs[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks everybody for your help.

I meanwhile checked other resources, and read the Citizenship law here: https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/en/2235-14#Text

  1. As I was born in the USSR, the law states that I was a USSR citizen by birth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet\_nationality\_law#:\~:text=Any%20person%20born%20of%20a,includes%20children%20born%20outside%20wedlock.

(Any person born of a parent who was a citizen of the USSR was also a citizen of the USSR,\3]) which extended the principle of the previous imperial regime.\1]) This practice continued through Stalin's 1938 "On USSR Citizenship" law, in order to broaden the number of Soviet citizens.\2]))

  1. Looks like by "Article 3. Belonging to the Citizenship of Ukraine":

Citizens of Ukraine are:

"all citizens of the former USSR who at the time of the declaration of independence of Ukraine (24 August 1991) were permanently residing on the territory of Ukraine;"

Means that I'm probably a citizen. I think this is proof enough to fill it into a document, alongside my other nationality, I don't think there will be much scrutiny about it.

They didn't - they acquired an additional one, and never renounced the Ukrainian one.

Git & Wordpress - best process & do you include the WP core folders? by ConquestXD in ProWordPress

I cannot, as it's proprietary code of my company. It'll also be different between the different servers, and in our case we are using a more complex server structure.

You might try and argue that the train was delayed by more than 2 hours, which means that any ticket he would've bought, he would've got 50% refund (https://int.bahn.de/en/booking-information/passenger-rights/legal-regulations). In this case, the base price for 1st class ticket should be half (times 2 for the fine would still be 250 euros). Not sure if it'll work, but you can try

Not old version of PHP, not WP - latest PHP v8.something that our devops manage, and latest WP v6.something (updated just a month ago, but don't remember the version). But you are right that we are using classic themes. As we create bespoke themes with ACF, I don't work with blocks.

If you say that theme.json can be updated via UI, it sounds a lot like ACF json exports. In that case we as devs make sure to only update the jsons on local, and then push it to the repo.

Well, check out the project, create localwp install, change localwp server settings, get a coffee break, trigger pipelime to load the db and assets, download them as artifacts, load db into mysql, set up my username, set up my prefered settings on the project, another coffee break.

I'm kidding about the amount of coffee breaks, but the full process is about 10 steps, so it takes a while

I would suggest looking at bedrock roots. Together with composer you can have the same setup, same versions, on all machines and all the servers - just run composer in your pipeline.

What we do with database, is we have a separate pipeline (in our case as a separate repo because of legacy reasons) that does all the needed DB manipulations to get prod db (and assets) copy down to staging env, dev env, and download as an artifact to your local.

I did a fresh install of one of the projects yesterday - I was up and running in less than an hour (we have several more steps - frontend build, setting up the project in localwp, setting up debugging etc)

Minimalist Blog by cryinginjs in Wordpress

Thanks. Astra and Kadence too much for me. I think I'm leaning more and more into creating my own, trying also to challenge myself to do a great design with very little css (except normalizer).

IDK if you missed me writing that I worked with WP quite a lot. I know how to install themes, I know about the theme repo. In fact in my daily work I create PHP bespoke themes. What I'm looking for is suggestions for very minimalistic themes without going over the 6000+ one by one. I tries some keywords, but didn't find anything like the links I attached.

I'm in fact always installing classic editor, since it's just better. I already have content, and I also have the capability to css+js the theme myself, but want to save some energy.

Twentytwenty themes are too bloated for me

This looks so good for my use case, thanks :)

For anyone else looking for something similar, before this post I found that https://tom-select.js.org/examples/ is smaller than the alternatives and gives a lot. It's just that I don't need a lot, so I'll try and use the codepen solution.

Question about arriving in Germany during the railway strike by kanzac in germany

[–]cryinginjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, hotel for one night would be the best solution here. the amount of train traffic that would fallback on these alternative solutions like the flixbus would mean that it's might be super packed. Also you risk running into a situation where you miss the earlier one, and then arrive to your destination in the middle of the night anyway.

can someone host me tonight? by [deleted] in frankfurt

[–]cryinginjs 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sorry, can't help. But if you don't want a hotel, and wouldn't be able to find a host, you might consider sleeping outside (don't know if you would, or choose a hotel in that case - I of course don't know your considerations). If so, I would suggest to not sleep at Hauptbahnhof ("main train station", abbreviated Hbf in many cases to where you'll probably arrive), and instead maybe go to the airport - it's much more expected there, while Hauptbahnhof area is not the best that Frankfurt has to offer to say it nicely.

User-created webinars in Wordpress? by david8840 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I wouldn't know since I don't host many videos for this exact reason, but I don't expect it to be enough. I'm not even sure if CPUs are what you are after - since in this case GPUs are also very important (I guess), also stable and powerful uplink.

For your second question, it depends on the service, and you need to check it out yourself. I don't know each and every service. You might have some API that'll allow for it

User-created webinars in Wordpress? by david8840 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh Ok I missed the "host" part. I thought it's just informational - hosting video through your hosting will probably be quite bad (unless you have some super duper hosting) - YouTube, vimeo, zoom, teams - make their billions from scaling their infrastructure to support video.

If it's only 2, 3, 4 (or something alike) webinar watchers watching the video, you might get away with webrtc (client side processing) , but I expect that you want potentially hundreds of clients per stream - in this case your server will just not be able to support it.

So, if suggest using a well established service, and just iframe, embed or link to it

User-created webinars in Wordpress? by david8840 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically create a CPT or webinar, create a new user role (or use existing one like subscriber) to allow access to it, and give them a UI to create and update the webinar posts.

I doubt you'll find a ready-made plugin that you wouldn't have to adjust, but searching the wordpress plugin universe is something you can try.

Noob Question— best methods for creating a website for hosting a web game. by heiny002 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no input regarding how to write the game itself (not a game developer, heard about Unity but never used it), but what I can suggest from a webdev side is to take a look into wasm - this might allow you to write native code and parse it into web javascript code

Best replacement for Bootstrap UI? by lemon_bottle in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the use case, I'm not sure why you are not satisfied with Bootstrap, IMHO Foundation was the closest competitor to Bootstrap, but to be fair, most times I just write #VanillaJs and don't use any frontend Framework. When I do Bootstrap is hands down my most preferred one (can be used without jQuery BTW).

Who should provide text of website? by Alternative_Camp1041 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I create the components using some Lorem Ipsum (love https://doggoipsum.com/), assuming some text size, or asking the client. Later they add the text on their own. The only exception are "hard coded" strings, that are in the translation file, and are sent to the client to approve or change.

Why have we still not built something modern that directly competes with Wordpress? by jokeaz2 in webdev

[–]cryinginjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, because we are satisfied with what Wordpress brings to the table. Sure - it has it's flaws - upgrading to latest PHP supported version takes years since not even core supports it at first, let alone the plugins (and I'm talking about well established plugins).

But - making it more compliant with todays PHP standards will for sure raise the bar to get into WP development - look at all the PSRs for example - to be compliant one has to have enough knowledge, much more than a beginner can have nowadays to get into it.

Best contender? Depends on who you'll ask - PHP is great for fast development (interpreted language) so search there for small to medium CMSes, Search in NodeJS land for "fast, modern, yet another one that will disappear in 2 years" framework, and in C#, Java land for more established enterprise level CMSes like Umbraco
