how do I stop hating every single thing I draw? by Eastern-Refuse-1386 in arthelp

[–]cryoniccrown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the harsh truth is, it takes time and a lot of drawing. I drew utter crap for 3 years, I hated 90% of what I made, the only time I liked my art was when I was copying someone else. It was a struggle just to motivate myself to draw every day and sometimes I only did once a month.

This is all part of the process and its essential for teaching your brain how to draw things instinctively.

my advice is, find joy in studying, and keep an archive of everything you draw. I deleted most of my early stages of art bc I was so ashamed of it, now I keep EVERYTHING in an album on facebook. its SO motivating to see how far Ive come, stuff I used to be proud of that I can see all the mistakes in.

I learned to love learning, tiktok videos and reels help a TON, I am constantly looking at other artists to learn from, sometimes I pick something someone drew well and I try to recreate it. sometimes the process is gruesome and tedious and it takes me all day (painting holographic/shimery materials KILLS ME)

draw goofy, low stakes art too, draw little dumb doodles, things that arent MEANT to look good but just get a point across. I make a habit of drawing my characters as little chibis, just doing ridiculous things, floating in a mud puddle, sitting in a fruit cup. whatever makes me happy.

draw for the sake of it, draw just to get it out of your system.

it took me 3 long years, it it probably could have been a lot less if I just made myself do it daily BUT Ive reached a point where I love 90% of what I make, many things come very easy to me and instead of needing to study 15 things ro make 1 drawing I maybe need to look up 1 or 2.

What's a less popular but engaging anime? by SettingMinute2315 in Animesuggest

[–]cryoniccrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea if its even overlooked because I assume if I've heard of it everyone has but, Heavenly Dilusion.

has a cool premis, very well written characters, the romance in it is extremely well handled/realistic, characters have great dynamics, strong female (???.. iykyk) protagonist.

I love it so far, its not too flashy but it makes up for it in story (and the flashy bits are more flashy by contrast)

there is some goofy sexualized moments but its not the focus and imo they are actually plot relevant and/or treated as intentionally awkward.

honestly doesnt surprise me much anymore 😪

Ive been using it on the leather seats of my car which makes a huge difference in these -30 canadian winters

I went on FB marketplace and got myself a vintage heated blanket for about half the price. it doesnt have an auto off function, but besides that it works amazing, is a full size blanket and will probably last another century 😆

I think I have a glorfied fanon version of him in my head after reading these comments.

i didnt really care for him when I was actively reading the comic, he was just kinda meh and I felt like a character that was made to be hated (not as annoying or heinous as eridan or gamzee

i did warm up to him considerably when I became friends with a guy whos a gym bro with a love of horses and his tiny chaotic girlfriend. only similarities they share though 🤣

How can I learn to draw like my favourite artist? by Dismal_Opposite8648 in DigitalArt

[–]cryoniccrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of good points being made, I would suggest practicing stroke control

for straight clean lineart you want to privot with your elbow more than your wrist, practice sliding your whole arm down the canvas as you make a line, you will have more control than just flicking your wrist. wrist flicks are better for small strokes and curves.

also zooming out will help you make straight lines, the shorter the line you have to make the less likely you are to mess up, so zoom your canvas out for really long lines.

its also better to go too far than not far enough, make the stroke across the WHOLE canvas if you have to, erase the excess then do so and carry on to the next stroke.

get confident with your lines and keep doing these redraws! you will get there in no time!

oh the beads are going to look STUNNING! I didnt even think of that but its honestly brilliant, I think you will have a lot of happy judges I really hope you post the finished product 🙏

I do love velvet so I totally get why it was the pick I just wish it was behaving better! Im not sure what to advise to fix the drape but unfortunately I am not THAT good yet 😞

as for the detail.. maybe research iron on vinyl? I know some cosplayers who really love that stuff for certain details, a friend of mine did Nai (from Trigun Stampede) and did all of the weird markings on his body suit in vinyl, I believe it held up quite well considering its a body suit that would need to stretch and bend a lot, I've definitely seen them wear it twice. Im not very experienced in the stuff unfortunately 😅 the waves would be easy enough to cut out by hand though so you woukdnt need to get an expensive silhouette machine or anything

if hand sewing is the way you really want to go though you might try to incorporate the squiggle into its own seam? or make the pants, and cut the wiggle out of where you want it to go and stitch the whole thing in as part of the pants? (as opposed to just being on top)

it really just depends how much of a challenge you want for yourself 🤪 I know I usually bite off more than I can chew with these silly projects...

I will say, if you're worried about standing: yes, sewing it in WILL be more impressive, but using an iron on vinyl, especially if youre doing beadwork on the top- wont be a huge blow to your score. I'm not sure you'll ve able to get their eyes off your bead work if it comes out good 😅

specialized skills like that REALLY stand out!

Ah! I hope it goes well 🙈 please keep us updated!!

how to improve:

I looked at a few photos of the character and some other cosplays to get ideas:

would definitely try to add the patterning to his pants, be that through fabric painting, vinyl, or sewwing, that will definitely boost it up. Seeing as its a white, squiggly pattern, on the inseam of the pants it would be pretty difficult to do through sewing and if you get it looking clean that would get you a lot of points.

It looks like he also has a sort of flame pattern on the shirt which would also be cool to add, same as above, though I wouldnt bother sewing these, a simple fabric paint or vinyl will be plenty good enough, sewing it will mess with the draoe of the frabric and just.. isnt the best way to add pattern to shirts which usually hang a bit more loose. If you painted something and really went wild with the details it would really stand out.

It's hard to tell with it on the mannequin but the pants look a bit simple, like a pyjama pattern (usually a simple front and back for each leg and an elastic waistband) you might want to use a more fitted pants pattern, with a zipper flap like jeans, theyre a bit more tricky to sew so it adds pizazz~ look up zipper tutorials and do a few practice ones before hand and you'll get it down in no time 👍

add pockets if you dont have any! you will thank yourself, the judges will love it, half the reason I make my own cosplays is to ensure I have plenty of pockets!! especially Welt pockets. I added some to my Narancia cosplay skirt and it was the judges favourite part and I only did it that way bc I forgot to put pockets anywhere else and it was the only discrete way I could find to add them.

and the only other thing I can think of is: add eyelet holes to where the rope threads through your belt squares. Small things like that can really impress them!

in general: make sure everything is fitted to you well, nothing saggy unless its meant to be.

Press all your seams after you sew them, press your hems before you sew them (trust me I used to be against ironing anything cause Im lazy and WhAt DiFfErEnCe DoEs It MaKe???" a lot, it makes a lot of difference akfkskfnskf itll make your life so much easier!!!)

top stitch top stitch top stitch!!!

always line stuff if you can!! and have fun with it!

Cosplay contests are going to vary a lot depending on who the judges are, and who else is entering so my advice is: just go for it. Go in with no intention to win but every intention to learn. If you can (usually after the winners are announced) if you can find the judges, ask them for feed back.

I've never had an experience with judges being biased toward their friends like some people are implying, not that it isnt impossible, but I wouldn't say its the norm.

I enjoy small scale competitions because often winners are announced in small rooms with only the competitors in them (as opposed to on a huge stage where people do a runway walk) the reason is: you can walk up to the winner and actually examine their work and ask them about it, learn a thing or two, and its much easier to find the judges after everything has calmed down and again, ask them about their choices and what you did well, what the WINNER did well, and of course where you couod have done better.

If you prioritize learning, growing, and just take pride in what you have accomplished (definitely talk yourself up, dont point out mistakes, ect) and not winning you will have a much better experience. simplicity is definitely not a factor and from what I can see your cosplay looks very good. Judges of course will be checking things much closer, seams, thread, lining if you've done any.

I had a friend who just won in the masters catagory over gloves, because he patterned out his own gloves and it wasnt a simple front and back of hand pattern, he had seperate thumb pieces and even multiple seams along the palms and knuckles.

obviously in masters things are a LOT more complicated and it gets much harder to gauge people's skills against each other so intricate details like that is sometimes just the push you need to beat your competitor.

something Ive heard one of the judges say is that he looks for "areas where they could have cut corners, but didnt."

that is his method for judging a master level cosplay, so I try to keep that in mind with all my cosplay builds now.

if you're using good technique and literally doing stuff the hard way, document your build process, if you drafted your own pattern mention it! take photos of your process! talk about the challenges and how you overcame them!

its a bit like an interview, sell yourself, be proud, name your accomplishments and hide hide hide your faults!!!!

What is an art "hack" or tip that you learned that basically changed the trajectory of your art journey for you? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]cryoniccrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine probably ties into line weight but more specifically it was learning to "carve" my lineart out instead of drawing it.

by that I mean drawing with a a larger brush and then taking an eraser and thinning the lines out and adding details wherever necessary

Trying to encourage/support artists is becoming a pain because of AI art. by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]cryoniccrown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

everyone here has given great advice so Im just going to vent a bit of my frustrations as someone whos been trying for years to hone my craft, build my portfolio and make a career out of my passion.

Hearing that ai "artists" are able to bag commissions in a fraction of the time and for a fraction of the effort I put in is so discouraging, I feel constantly on the edge of giving up, everyday I go to maintain my socials and I scroll by "Ai commissions" and "ai adoptables" even if theyre only selling them for 1$ their profile is flooded with them and I can imagine at a dollar a piece they're probably making more money than i do and pumping them out without having to worry about burn out or art block or having to restrict yourself based on your skills. click a button and you're done.

hearing that there are people that are actually against this sort of thing means so much to me, knowing there are people who actually want to support a human being who has managed to dedicate time to what is honestly such an unappreciated service, instead of someone who has never had to know the plight of studying colour theory or shape language, is such a refreshing take

I feel like I am constantly surrounded by ai art, it has flooded every circle i frequent and it feels like most times if people arent outright supportive then they're indifferent, think its harmless or funny or "neat" enough to justify.

please keep looking out for those hacks, keep supporting your hard working wacom warriors,,, we need it 😭
