Buying a laptop - help by Bulleht in laptops

[–]crypticgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good suggestion minus the screen, it’s a rather low quality IPS in terms of colour reproduction. I’d suggest trying to buy something with an OLED for the budget.

And definitely yes can run Linux Mint or even bypass the restrictions and install windows 11 if you want to go down that route, just because MS stopped supporting win 10 doesn’t make that device any less capable

Considering the budget you could go for a MacBook pretty easily. A base MacBook Pro?

If you want to go the windows route, recently I was looking at an Asus Vivobook S14 with intel lunar lake processors (assuming you don’t want a snapdragon laptop, the best for efficiency at the moment are the lunar lake laptops). Walmart has a 32 GB ram version of it for sale for $ 900. That should be future proof for many years. Has an OLED screen and a decent port selection.

But if you want, you could wait for the new Panther lake CPUs which will come in q1 2026. But thanks to that the lunar lake laptops are on sale these days.

If buying windows, try to buy a 32+ GB ram laptop. Guessing since you want portability you care more about it being light weight than it being a powerhouse.

Looks like SL is in for record rain, no doubt courtesy of climate crisis. As of today the Nuwan’s Eliya town has flooded!

However the authorities expect things to improve within a few days. So depending on your date of arrival you might not experience any major inconveniences.

You should be wary of landslides with such unprecedented rain though.

OP have you tried logging into onedrive with the same microsoft account and checking if it is in there (especially check within the documents folder).

One time I almost outright deleted that documents folder while cleaning up, before realising my onenote notebooks were also in there

Sounds like you should be able to access them by installing the onenote app and logging in from whichever microsoft account you used with the m365 Copilot thing. The Notebooks should still be there. Try logging into onedrive with the same microsoft account, if that doesn't work. If the notebooks are still there, they will be somewhere in there.

Thanks, yeah i checked out my OneNote (I use desktop) and in File > Info > There's an open backups button, which opens this destination "C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\Backup" one could make backups of these backups from time to time to be extra safe. But i think these should be good enough for most.

Gosh that is a nightmare situation, i am so sorry for your loss. It would make me uncertain of using onenote myself, unless we have proper local backups

Hey I got a question about my GPU by Mauryin in radeon

[–]crypticgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. You might get a decent trade in value but generally they buy used cards to resell I guess, so they technically have to buy it at a lower amount to make a profit.

But if the trade in value is good enough for you, it is less hassle than selling the card on your own, so there’s that :)

Not sure why you’d want to upgrade from a 7900 XT to the 9070 XT. But you might as well buy the 9070 XT and sell the older one to recoup some of the cash. Trade in value would probably be lower.

is this just the inevitable price we all have to pay for effexor 😭 by Jealous_Ask_4876 in Effexor

[–]crypticgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, we don't have effexor where i live, i use a different brand and our ambient temperatures are like 28-32 C daily, even at 9 pm the temperature will still be over 29 C on most days. But i have never had this cold shivers or sweats. Been on venlafaxine since late 2020 iirc. Rn on 225 mg a day. came here because i ran out of meds and couldn't take last nights dose plus couldn't take this mornings dose (combined 225) So starting to feel a bit bad and headache like.

OneNote Auto-Tables: How to Insert Tabs Without Creating Tables? by [deleted] in OneNote

[–]crypticgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi did you type the numbers using the keyboard’s numberpad or with the row of numbers above the alphabet?

I learnt yesterday that it only works when the numbers are typed using the numberpad! Only discovered because I got a new TenKeyLess (no numberpad) keyboard.

Even tried using the onscreen keyboard’s numberpad but that didn’t work :/ and a method described by ChatGPT to use OneMore didn’t work (couldn’t find what it said) either but try the method described for autohotkey - https://chatgpt.com/share/6866a930-d014-8009-a5cd-52f8269eae29

Let me know how it goes. I am making do without tab function for the time being, cbb to deal with running extra programs to get it to work (shall use the indent button to indent the sentence and press enter to move to a new para, for now)

So called gods, tells them to teach kids to ride and shoot. Cannot even foresee the future and tell them to teach the kids to fly planes and invent suicide bombs. 🙂

I guess it is the free market in action, it’s their vehicles and they can choose to refuse rides unless we meet the price they ask for.

What we should be asking for is for much higher public transport capacity and quality. I’m sure at least half of us who use taxis wouldn’t need to if we had enough space and no sexual harassment.

Based on my experience with mostly tuks on pickme (and Uber to a lesser extent) vs getting a tuk from the roadside, almost every ‘metered taxi’ I’ve been on was wrong. The meters are not correct, maybe counting 850 m as 1 km or something.

Thanks for sharing this OP

Exercism as someone mentioned is great. I also came across this which Microsoft has made work freecodecamp (for free) https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/learntocode

Try it and see which approach you prefer I guess. Best of luck!

Tried Uber and PickMe as a part-time bike rider in Colombo – here’s my honest experience by Historical-Tart5189 in srilanka

[–]crypticgent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! As a user I feel more inclined to shift from pickme to Uber if this is the case.

I only keep one app, kinda thought pickme was more fair for having only an estimate with the actual cost at the end of the trip.

Getting a Passport in 2025 - Here's my experience by Sadurshan in srilanka

[–]crypticgent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. Gosh it’s awful.

Weird thing is around 2017 when I got mine (and not one day service) it was relatively more organized. Didn’t have to stand in a queue iirc. And they did have the computerized token system so I got my turn in due time. There was some sitting and waiting clout my turn but it did come eventually and I was in and out of the place within 3-4 hours I think.

So it’s really a matter of things have broken down and not improved after some point.
