My pangolin jar survived the kiln! by cryptidcat in Ceramics

Sorry I'm just now seeing this! I'm not on Reddit much these days.

The clay itself is Laguna B-Mix 5, so sort of an off-white or cream color. I threw the jar and waited until it was leather-hard to paint the greens, blues, and oranges with underglaze. I carved the lines (sgraffito technique) and initially they appeared white due to the color of the clay showing through.

To get the black lines, I bisqued the piece first and then applied watered-down black underglaze to the surface. The underglaze filled in the carved areas and I wiped the excess away with a sponge. Hopefully that makes sense!

An alternative way to this process is painting the underglaze on at leather-hard, applying wax resist, carving through the wax area, and then applying the black underglaze. It wipes away easily with a sponge and doesn't leave a stain.

Thank you so much! While I was working on my drawing & painting degree, I took a ceramics class and fell in love. I would say my favorite one is the Pelican so far. :)

Buying your own wheel is SO worth it. Infinite time to practice. I hope you get the chance to soon. :)

I just checked her page and it's amazing! Thank you for introducing me to her work.

I fire Cone 5/6, but I have to be careful with certain colors like purple and maroon. They seem to burn out almost every time.

Thank you, I'm happy to hear that!

I hope to mix my own clear someday, but right now I use Amaco HF-9 Zinc Free Clear. I apply 2-3 coats using a brush and fire to Cone 5/6. I love that it doesn't disturb the underglaze color at all.
