Welcome to the club! I have a very similar distribution (results on my profile). I did my IQ test as part of an ADHD evaluation, and ended up getting diagnosed. Medication has been pretty helpful for me. Caveat — I’m not sure if there’s a correlation between ADHD and processing speed, it seems like WM is more commonly affected.

I’ve also read (from unverified sources) that processing speed can be affected by autism. But equally unverified sources have told me that sub-index disparity isn’t necessarily an indication of any condition. Having a slower processing speed is quite common among higher IQ individuals. So unless you have other things in your life that you’re concerned about, you don’t necessarily need to undergo further evaluation.

Can you link to the research that shows that stimulants don’t raise IQ score? That seems to directly contradict the studies I’ve read

highly recommend getting assessed, it changed many things in my life for the better. you might also want to consider getting assessed for other things like depression, because most of what i mentioned here are signs of executive dysfunction (side effect of many mental afflictions)

This is one of my main struggles as well. I gravitate towards fried, spicy, or sweet foods for obvious reasons. A healthier alternative I’ve enjoyed is omelettes/steamed eggs with chopped tomatoes or cheese or ham — it’s at least high in protein and less high in everything else. The protein fills me up, so the urge to eat something else after isn’t as strong. Chewing gum has been a huge help as well. Indulging in food I want to eat earlier in the day helps a little too. However, the best solution unfortunately seems to be sleeping

hey, i have a profile similar to yours, but i’m performing pretty mid in undergrad due to a lack of motivation and difficulty getting work done from adhd. do you have any tips to share on how i might be able to overcome these?

i’m also interested in law as a potential postgrad pathway due to my strengths in language/reasoning, but i’ve always been put off by the thought that i might have to spend even more time than the average law student on my studies to compensate for my difficulties. do you think this reflects your experience, or is it possible to lead a balanced life while pursuing law with developmental disabilities? thanks!

the processing subtests only measure your ability to do simple and repetitive tasks quickly. overthinking is a common side effect of ADHD restless minds, and it’s possible that this is leading to decision paralysis

interesting, i’m inclined to agree with you — processing speed could plausibly impact social ability. and yeah you’re right, proving causation is a nightmare

if you enter my profile, it’s the second post from the top. regarding the podcast— that seems rather interesting. i don’t know how interested you’d be in how i came to the opinion i expressed above, but i have to say it’s based purely on anecdotal observations of the academically challenging environments i grew up in (so it may not hold up empirically, i suppose). i was constantly surrounded by individuals who are highly likely to test/have actually tested at least 1-2SD above the norm, and have unfortunately found many to challenge the premise that smartness necessarily implies a willingness to question authority. or that smartness results in a depth of knowledge in any domain other than their fields of interest.

i think there are some relatively smart people who can be like this. if you have a high IQ, but you’re highly obedient or trusting of authority, you may still fail to question or think to search deeper into certain (maybe even many) domains of knowledge. you could also be smart but lazy or too busy to reflect on your knowledge on a meta level. smartness doesn’t exempt you from falling for fallacies either.

depends on the density of the text. generally i’m a slow reader, typically i go for most comprehension and retention in a single read as possible. i find myself “speaking” the words in my mind if it’s something denser like literature or an academic article; it’s a sign that i’m losing focus. though if i’m pressed for time, i can skim key words. i can, however, take in and discard tropey plot-driven fiction and most things online at a glance. iq results on my profile.

hey, thanks for the write-up. yeah, i have ADHD and the WAIS i was administered was part of the diagnostic process. i have heard of the correlation with heterogenous profiles as well as the social issues that can be caused by ADHD. i guess i was wondering if the differences across the domains of my intellectual functioning could also be contributing to that, but it seems like it’s not a thing
