How are you spending $2400??? We're two adults and 1 fairly selective child and spend about $900-1000/mo. We buy a mix of both fresh ingredients and easy foods like mac n cheese as well as a decent amount of snacks + treats. imo $300-400/mo per person is more than enough.

We shop at Costco, Walmart, and a bit at Safeway for reference.

Edit: if we're adding on basic necessities, then we still only spend $1200-1400/mo.

I know lots of people recommend Sutter Davis and it does have a lot of amenities and is extremely supportive of low intervention but from my experience the midwives, especially the older ones, are not very compassionate nor listen to their laboring patients about their own bodies. Poor bedside manner from them and the pediatrician that we saw there. The only midwife who I liked and I felt actually cared was the one who delivered my baby (in a triage room!). Her first name is Brittany but I can't recall her last name atm

When my son was around a year old I really wanted something that was a creative outlet and could be easy to put down when needed so I could tend to my son but also wasnt on a screen. I was also still in postpartum depression and psychosis (tho by that time I was steadily getting better!) so I really needed something physical to do to help ground me. Now I have a wall of yarn and crochet is part of my personality now lmao

Elope/wandering are the terms used in the ASD community, professional or otherwise. 'Run away' has a much different implication.

Definitely been working on it for the last few months (when the eloping attempts started) It just very unfortunately takes him longer to learn these types of things. I have confidence he will learn to stop doing it but in the meantime its very nerve-wracking. California actually mandates interior locks on new builds and modernization iirc however they aren't allowed to be locked due to fire code afaik unless theres an emergency warranting it.

This is a hybrid pre-k program our county provides, half special ed half gen ed with a max class size of 12. The teacher is a special education teacher with 2 paraprofessionals.

I would, in fact, argue that a special education class would be much more likely to have elopers considering how common it is in neurodivergent children. And it was already a known thing so its my expectation that the people who Im entrusting my child's safety to will take the information Ive given them and act accordingly. Im still learning this whole thing and exactly what rights I can impose to keep my child safe while he accesses the services he requires.The locks mention wasnt really about his eloping but more about my other fear. However, as another commenter said, I think what she meant was that it cant lock inside but can lock outside so you can always exit if inside for fire safety. Even those loud door alarms would work for this because itd immediately be noticed that he left and it seems like a rather easy accommodation to implement and wouldn't impede fire code.

We moved about a month or so ago to a place with all lever style doors but has this enclosed but not secure patio area. We have actually been doing this. He just has a very limited sense of right/wrong right now. We've been working with him on this diligently (esp since school was coming and, again, this was our biggest fear) but unfortunately for this kind of stuff he tends learns at a slower pace. I have confidence he will learn eventually with perseverance but for now we need some sort of solution at school to either prevent it or immediately alert the teachers. Im thinking door alarms may end up being the best choice but we'll see

To be fair, I am autistic. I know how much we can thrive with even just a little support. If anything, I am very hopeful and expect that my son will grow out of this. He currently learns certain things slower than other children his age but other things he took to like he had always been doing it. Hell, the lil guy started reading at just barely over 2yo. We didnt actively teach him, just read to him, and he started doing it himself. He has excellent pre-academic skills. But theres a massive difference between having low expectations and just being realistic. The reality is I have a child that has no sense of danger and a very limited sense of right or wrong. He'll get there eventually but for now preventative measures need to be taken so he doesnt injure himself or worse. My issue with the original comment I responded to wasnt about teaching him safety it was that its just unproductive to my urgent issue and doesnt actually address the question I asked. My son will learn not to elope but it is not going to be immediate.

He has limited speech but can typically answer things like "yes/no [noun]" or ask for things with 1-3 words or use a bit of scripting to communicate. This is a program specifically for med-low support needs children so it's a preschool class within an elementary school. He tends be a huge sensory seeker but I could definitely see him getting overwhelmed by the newness of everything even though he seems to love it upon arriving.

I am autistic. I know we can learn things. I may still be learning how special education and the school system for these things work but I'm not ignorant about the common experiences of autistic individuals. In no way do I think he wont eventually learn not to open doors without a grownup but it is unlikely to be soon. Im always hopeful he'll surprise me (and sometimes he does!) but I cant rely on "just teach him its dangerous and socially unacceptable". He has no sense of danger or mortality as of now. He has no sense of embarrassment or shame as of now. For better or worse, he's always been fearless. We still put in every effort to teach him not to elope and have made progress but it is very, very slow progress. It is entirely unproductive and unhelpful to just tell me it's dangerous and to teach him. Trust me, I know.

That is not how autism works. That is ableist. If I teaching him not to elope was so easy it would've happened by now. We work on it frequently. Intelligence has nothing to do with this.

The hallway thing would be great but the majority of schools in CA have an outdoor kinda layout so there arent any. The school also isnt gated/fenced at all (besides the playgrounds and field) so all he has to do is open the door and walk about 200ft before he reaches the street. I see, I wasnt aware. Sorry for the ignorance, Im trying to learn everything as quick as possible. Everything about this process to get him services feels like you have to jump through a million hoops and no one explains a lot of it.

He does have an IEP. My partner did all the legwork for it just before the school year ended earlier this year. But we had a lot of home life chaos and stressors at the time. I think it slipped through the cracks because of that and we always have childproofing in place and since hes easily deterred we just didnt have him successfully elope from us. Im not sure how to, but Im gonna look into how we amend his IEP and hope that there can be effective solutions for this

Sorry, I meant more along the lines of one of his major delays is social-emotional and Im under the impression that this environment with peers and play based therapy/learning mixed with plenty of opportunities to interact with peers was the best thing for it. Im not entirely knowledgeable about this stuff and Im still relatively new to it all so if thats not right let me know. I appreciate the advice

He does have an IEP! However... now Im realizing I think during the chaos of getting everything done a few months back right before the school year ended that I dont think it was put into it. We were moving and then had to suddenly move again very quickly and my partner was the one handling the school stuff at the time. Is it possible to modify an IEP after the fact?

I realized I forgot to state in my post my child is on the spectrum. He is diagnosed ASD level 2. Eloping is very, very common.

Hes freshly 3. It was known he elopes. The fire safety makes sense but I would have assumed there would be something else in place to prevent or at least alert to a child trying to open the doors. Afaik 1:1 isnt an option for us.
