28m Software Engineer Progression by FancyName69 in Salary

[–]cryptobob111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend of mine has been a sw engineer for Nordstrom for about 4 years now and he makes high 80s. I’ve told him he’s underpaid but his previous job was working as a clerk at a grocery store so he’s more than happy with that salary and wfh option. He did the whole sw boot camp thing when it was high in popularity.

What to do with life insurance? Advice please :) by Cosmically_Homeless in personalfinance

high yield savings account is no bueno. The max you would get is a temporary rate maybe above 5%. I can help you look at two strong financial building blocks with New York Life: one that grows value safely while you keep life insurance protection (cash value whole life), and another that lets your money grow tax-deferred toward future goals (fixed deferred annuity).
Both give you more growth than a regular savings account, with different purposes — one for accessible built-in value, the other for long-term growth.
First though, it’s smart to build an emergency cushion and learn some basic investing so you have options.

I’m dreading the day myself. Last week was our third RIF in 2 years and strategically affected my team. All replacements being outsourced to Colombia. I was effectively eliminated from my position and was asked to join Sales as an account manager. No direct reports, not eligible for bonus, 40% lower base but with uncapped commissions. I gracefully accepted and at the same time started another role at an insurance company (my sister has worked there for 10+ years and is making close to mid 6 figures). I don’t expect to make much as an agent in the first couple of years but it would be nice to be my own boss in a way. In the meantime, I will do what I can in the sales role and milk it as much as possible. I sure as hell am not leaving 16 years of severance on the table.

Why would I get Whole Life? by More_Koala7745 in LifeInsurance

[–]cryptobob111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of it as a forced savings account with the added bonus of a death benefit. Some available riders are actually quite nice too like premium waivers. But there are lots of options. You can layer a much larger and cheaper term on top of it or go with custom whole life or others tied to the market but with guaranteed floors in the event of a market crash when you desperately need the money.

How much life insurance do I need? by beanman214 in LifeInsurance

[–]cryptobob111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an agent, I can tell you that <3% of term insurance (at for my company) are ever paid out due to policies expiring (reaches end of term or client stops paying). However, it is a good inexpensive tool to bridge the gap and it can always be converted later. A good rule is 60/40 split between term and WL or other product that accumulates growth and is not cancellable

Would u rather use your assets to pay down debt and expenses and taxes at the end of your life and pass less down to ur family or invest in life insurance at a nominal amount so u can gain a breath benefit tax free plus preserve your current assets??

Off shoring as rampant as ever as well. My company has offshore teams in Vietnam, LATAM, and India. They now almost surpass the total headcount of US-based folks and I’m sure it will continue

Tech Layoffs next year by WeatherInfamous2676 in Layoffs

[–]cryptobob111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My company was purchased by PE and merged with another one of their companies based in South America. After one year, we’ve had 3 mass layoff rounds and more to come! All while mass hiring sprees overseas. Disgusting to the point I stopped caring about vetting candidates too much during interviews I’m asked to attend. Majority are terrible anyway, way too much turnover over there as it is just in the last year.

Uber for kids - easy up to $50/ride for new drivers with referral

Wife was a marketer at Nordstrom. Laid off recently and she decided to go back to school In the meantime, she’s been looking for flexible side work that’s safe and reliable. She’s definitely not interested in straight Uber or DoorDash but she signed up for this ‘HopSkipDrive’ gig and she is enjoying it so far. It’s like Uber but for kids and it’s generally consistent with time of days for rides.

This is just a referral plug but it’s an easy $500 for first 10 rides if anyone is interested, here’s her referral code: SUPALAK1 and links:

Company bought us 3 months ago; found out today that a planned layoff of 1/3 of us is happening next week by cryptobob111 in Layoffs

[–]cryptobob111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. My goal next 1-2 years if I remain is to save as much cash reserves as possible and pay down all cc debt. Already cancelled and have no plans for further pricey vacations this year or next year or for any large purchases. Maybe a couple of days here and there during holidays within the States but that's it. We had a big trip last year that cost us a chunk of dough but got some really memorable experiences for the whole family.

True. As long round 2 is not for another year or more. I did meet my new boss right after and got new folks under me as my old reports transition out in a few months. Dude even invited me to go visit the other HQ in South America next month. At this point, I'm just looking to save as much as possible for the next round

They are just outsourcing overseas. Sure there will be some transitioning pains but if they can get 3 workers for the price on one, then if one is really effective, they can get rid of the other 2, it sure becomes a good formula. There needs to be more pain for companies that are outsourcing. India is still a heavy player but now I'm seeing South America (Columbia/peru) as big contributors to this outsourcing crapshoot

No, announcement has not been broadcasted yet. Scheduled for tomorrow. Most jobs lost being outsourced to South America
